After frying a portable hard drive in Kenya this past June, I wanted something with more shock resistance. this seemed like a good choice. The HUGE plus was that it works with both Windows and Mac OS. Game changer for me!

Some points on using for Mac backups. 1. You can create an arbitrary number of volumes on the disk, once you format in desired Mac format. A volume need not have a reserved max size, 2. You can encrypt Time Machine backups. 3, If you want to use Time Machine, you MUST NOT use SanDisk's provided disk encryption software. It would be nice if SanDisk made these facts part of its documentation. Otherwise, it is a beautiful object--tiny, light, fast, capacious.

I purchased this on Jan 3, 2023 for a work trip abroad. I shot nearly 6,000 images in Italy over a 3 day period from Jan 10-12. LUCKILY every time I dumped my cards, I also put them directly on my laptop hard drive. Last night, Jan 18, 2023 as I was working from the drive in Lightroom, the drive had a catastrophic failure, froze up, and then every thing was gone. 110% will never be able to trust these drives again. Terrifying.

Faulty drives! Crash and flash

We ordered two of these drives and have now had our third major issue with them. One drive corrupted and remounted as 'Untitled' and no data, the other switched to unwrittable, then after formatting and use isn't able to mount on a different computer. Major word of caution with this batch or maybe just this version of the Sandisk SSD 4tb. Never had any issues on the 2TB or other sandisk so I'm at a loss for words.

Just love this ssd, have two. Use one as a boot drive on my old IMAC and its a new machine. The other as a backup drive for my horse. Keep making them….don’t mind the short cable really comes in handy on the road

For Linux and Mac cross compatibility, you would simply need to format the drive into the ExFAT File System on either machine.

Sandisk as improved the performance of their SSDs. The Extreme V2 is now as fast as the Pro V1. The Pro V2 is twice as fast as its predecessor.

Is this drive formatted out of the box for a Windows PC? If I use it with a PC to backup photos while traveling, can I then plug it into my Mac at home to copy the photos to my Mac-based home system? Thanks!

No, this drive is not pre-formatted. If you would like to use the drive with both Windows and Mac computers then the best format to choose is exFAT, which will be able to work with both operating systems.

Can anyone weigh in on sustained read/write for applications like video editing?

I've done a fair amount of Final Cut Pro X with this drive. No complaints here. Without moving parts, any SSD drive should perform much better than a standard drive. I have one for photos and one for video editing. When the video one fills up, I dump older projects onto an 8TB standard drive.
