SanDisk Extreme V2 External SSD Reviews

Compact & Lightweight

I purchased two of these to transfer my photo library from conventional external disc drives onto these SSD's, for a rotating backup setup. I have never had a drive failure previously, and I don't want to trust the spinning disc drives any further. Very small and lightweight . easy to pack and store.

Bought 2, both failed

I have used G-Drive and SanDisk portable SSDs for years with no issues. Bought 2 of these in January to use as rotating backup drives. Each failed (one twice!) for no apparent reason, the volume does not contain a recognized file system, unfortunately AFTER the B&H return window closed. The only option was to reformat, thus all data was lost. It is baffling that an SSD can function flawlessly one minute and not know its own name the next. All the recent reviews citing the same experience with both this and the Extreme Pro 4TB model strongly suggest bad batches. SanDisk Support willingly initiated RMAs to replace both drives, no questions asked, which seems to support bad batches, as do the deep price discounts. Not sure I'll trust the replacements. I may spend a little more and go with G-Drive/G-Tech.

I have purchased two of these - one for my own photo and video archives and one to back up my wife's MacBook Pro. Access and retrieval of files is lightning fast. These are rugged, attractive and compact little external SSD hard drives at a very aggessive price point. Highly recommended.

So tiny!

I am surprised at how little it is. It has nice rubber edges and back to it. Feels like a quality product. So far it has worked flawlessly.

I am using a MacBook Pro 2019 running on macOS Monterey, and I am trying to format the SSD as ExFat. It is not working and taking forever to erase, and it has been showing the erasing screen for over an hour. Is there something I am doing wrong?
Asked by: Raphael H.
I suggest that you call Apple Support at 800-275-2273 Apple Support staff are awesome at walking you thru the formatting process. It does not matter that it is a 3rd party drive, nor does it matter that your Apple Care may have expired. They will help you with this regardless of these things, as long as you are the registered owner of your Mac.

Is it normal for this thing to heat up? I just got one and after an hour of editing, it is pretty hot to the touch. I just want to make sure this is normal and not a malfunction.
Asked by: Joe
I suppose it depends on how much read/write takes place on the SSD. Mine will be warm but not hot. I use for Time Machine backup so that's just once an hour. I really don't test for temp.
