Sigma 105mm f/2.8 DG DN Macro Art Overview

By B&H Photo's

Optical excellence with close-focusing capabilities, the L-mount 105mm f/2.8 DG DN Macro Art Lens, from Sigma, is a short-telephoto prime optimized for macro use. With a minimum focusing distance of 11.6", and a 5.5" working distance, this lens offers a life-size, 1:1 reproduction ratio for accurate rendering of close-up subjects. Its optical design incorporates one SLD element, which also helps to realize high clarity and color accuracy by suppressing various aberrations and color fringing. A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied, which controls flare and ghosting for greater contrast.

Benefitting handling, this lens sports a Hyper-Sonic Motor for quick and quiet AF performance and intuitive full-time manual focus control. A focus limiter switch also helps to boost focusing speed and precision, and there is also a customizable AFL button and dedicated focus mode switch. Additionally, the lens features a nine-blade rounded diaphragm for smooth bokeh quality and the lens housing is also weather-sealed to suit working in inclement conditions.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
Short-telephoto prime is designed for full-frame L-mount mirrorless cameras but can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 157.5mm equivalent focal length.
One Special Low Dispersion (SLD) element markedly reduces chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
True macro design affords a life-size 1:1 maximum magnification along with an 11.6" minimum focusing distance, and a 5.5" minimum working distance, to suit working with close-up subjects.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocus performance, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Focus limiter switch can be used to constrain the focusing range within three zones for faster, more responsive performance: 11.6" to 1.6', 1.6' to infinity, and 11.6" to infinity.
Manual aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications. Additionally, a dedicated aperture ring lock switch can also be employed to prevent accidental shifting of the aperture setting.
Built-in Autofocus-Lock (AFL) button which can be assigned additional functions widens the range of operations available on the lens.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
Weather-resistant construction with a brass bayonet that affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity.
The L-mount version of this lens is compatible with optional TC-1411 and TC-2011 teleconverters, which can be used to further increase magnification without increasing the effective working distance. Additionally, this lens is compatible with the optional Sigma UD-11 USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

Sigma 105mm f/2.8 DG DN Macro Art Reviews

Great Lens Great Price

This is quickly becoming my favorite lens. For this price point I'm super impressed with it. I use this for product photography primarily, but also have used it for street photography. The bokeh is great and I would recommend this to anyone looking for a new art lens. The aperture control being right on the lens is also super helpful for street photography. Overall, super impressed.

Great Lens for the price point!

Macro Master, Portrait Pro

This lens excels for several reasons. 1. It's 1:1 Macro reproduction is outstanding. But using this on a 61MP A7Riv lets you cheat the 1:1 and get away with even bigger reproduction. 2. It's sharp. Dang sharp. 3. The bokeh is buttery smooth.

Super cool lens, wish focus was faster

This lens is sharp!! Super crisp. I just wish that the focus was smoother. Since the plane of focus can be super narrow sometimes, focusing on small subjects can be hard.

A must for your camera bag

Using this lens for macro and portraits on a Sony A1. Just wow! This is the sharpest lens you can buy at any price point for the Sony E-mount system. Worth every penny.

So far, I'm impressed

While I've only had the lens for a bit more than a week, I am pleasantly surprised with its performance, so far. Like my other Sigma lens, the image is sharp and the and the color rendition is good. So far, I've experimented with the lens for table-top photography and the results are quite good. The lens plays very well with My SL2, which I typically use in manual mode. One difference I've noted thus far is that the lens cannot be automatically focused using the joy stick when in manual mode, but it plays well with the auto enlarge feature of the SL2 to allow for precise focusing. The lens is also recognized in Capture One, making tethered shooting a breeze, including focus stacking. All-in-all, it's a great companion to my Leica lenses and provides a nice low-cost prime lens to carry in the field. I'm looking forward to using the lens more, both in the studio and in the field, when spring returns.

Decent Lens

Sharp? Sure, in the absolute dead center, edge to edge, not so much. Overal good lens though and fast to focus. If you're a pixel peeper and want/need edge to edge sharpness, look elsewhere.

Great

Does the L-mount version of this lens support Focus Ring ControlLinear Focus? This feature was recently added to the 70mm DG Art macro, but I can find zero information as to whether it is supported on this lens. There is a Sigma list of compatible lenses, dated 2/22, but the 70 macro, which IS supported, is not on the list, so the list is not to be trusted.
