FUJIFILM X-S10 Overview

By B&H Photo's

Compact design, big feature-set, the FUJIFILM X-S10 is a sleek and versatile mirrorless camera well-suited to walkaround use. Touting capable photo and video features, the X-S10 mixes a portable form factor with the tools needed for everyday content creation.

Featuring the APS-C-sized 26.1MP X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor, the X-S10 supports high-resolution stills shooting, DCI/UHD 4K video at 30 fps, sensitivity from ISO 160-12800, and continuous shooting up to 8 fps with the mechanical shutter. The BSI design of the sensor affords reduced noise and greater overall clarity and is paired with the X-Processor 4 to achieve fast performance and improved responsiveness. The sensor's design also enables a hybrid autofocus system that combines 425 phase-detection points with a contrast-detection system for quick and accurate AF performance. Also complementing both stills and video is a 5 stop-effective sensor-shift image stabilization system to reduce the appearance of camera shake with almost any mounted lens.

FUJIFILM cameras are well-known for their uniquely intuitive physical designs, and the X-S10 features an updated layout for seamless handling and shooting efficiency, with the most noticeable change being a switch from a conventional shutter speed dial to a mode dial for more general use. The X-S10 also features a bright 2.36m-dot electronic viewfinder and rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD, which uses a vari-angle design to suit working from high, low, and front-facing angles. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enables wireless remote camera control and image sharing to a mobile device.

26.1MP APS-C X-Trans BSI CMOS 4 Sensor and X-Processor 4
Sporting a versatile and proven sensor, the X-S10 features the APS-C-format 26.1MP X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor, which has a back-illuminated design to achieve smooth tonal and color rendering, improved low-light performance, and a wide native sensitivity range of ISO 160-12800. As an X-Trans sensor, it utilizes a randomized pixel array, too, which provides a high degree of image quality and sharpness due to the omission of an optical low-pass filter. Versus conventional pixel patterns, the X-Trans design more closely mimics the organic nature of film in order to produce nuanced colors and tonal transitions, while also reducing moiré and aliasing.

The sensor's design also includes an expanded phase-detection autofocus system, which has 425 selectable points that cover nearly the entire sensor area. This AF system delivers faster, more accurate focusing performance in a variety of lighting conditions down to -6 EV. Complementing the imaging and focusing capabilities is the X-Processor 4, which has a quad-core CPU, and delivers faster, more responsive performance throughout the camera system, including a full-resolution 8 fps shooting rate with the mechanical shutter, 20 fps rate with an electronic shutter, or a 30 fps rate with an electronic shutter and a 1.25x crop.
In-Body Image Stabilization
Built-in 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 5 stops. This system works in conjunction with most X Series lenses, including non-stabilized ones, and benefits working with slower shutter speeds and when shooting in difficult lighting conditions. Additionally, 4-axis digital image stabilization can also be used during video recording to further aid in steadying footage, especially when recording handheld.
DCI and UHD 4K Video Recording
In addition to stills, the X-S10 also offers a versatile array of video capabilities, including internal DCI/UHD 4K recording at up to 30 fps and Full HD recording up to 240 fps for ultra slow-motion playback. Greatly benefitting overall video performance, the speed of the X-Processor 4 enables fast read speeds when recording video and helps to reduce rolling shutter distortion when filming moving subjects. Also, a micro-HDMI port enables 10-bit 4:2:2 recording to an optional external recorder for improved quality and the camera features a 3.5mm microphone jack for more advanced audio recording.
Body Design
  • High-resolution 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder has a 0.62x magnification for bright and clear eye-level viewing.
  • Vari-angle 3.0" 1.04m-dot LCD has a touchscreen design for intuitive operation and playback, and the articulating design greatly benefits working from high and low shooting angles. This vari-angle design also means you can close the screen against the camera body, hiding it from view for distraction-free shooting.
  • Despite the compact design, a large righthand grip enables solid and stable handling for comfortable all-day use.
  • The top plate incorporates a series of physical controls, including a dedicated exposure mode dial and two additional top dials, for fast, intuitive control over camera and exposure settings.
  • Rear joystick is available for intuitive selecting and switching of AF points as well as menu navigation and image playback.
  • Integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity allows for wirelessly sharing images to a mobile device or to use the device to remotely control the camera.
  • Single SD memory card slot supports up to the UHS-I standard for fast and flexible file storage.
  • Included NP-W126S battery provides approximately 325 frames per charge.
Film Simulation Modes
  • Taking advantage of FUJIFILM's vast history in traditional film-based photography, the X-S10 integrates several Film Simulation modes, which mimic the look and feel of some of FUJIFILM's classic film types:
    • Provia: The standard contrast and normal saturation color transparency film
    • Velvia: High contrast, high color saturation, and vivid color transparency film
    • Astia: Subdued contrast and color saturation with a look that is ideal for portraits
    • Classic Chrome: Delivers muted tones and deep color reproduction, similar to a dated slide film
    • Classic Neg: Muted contrast but vibrant colors with a vintage filmic feel
    • PRO Neg: Available with both Hi and Std. contrast options, this mimics the punchy-but-natural feeling of their professional-grade color negative film
    • Eterna: For a cinematic look, this provides a flat color, low saturation look well-suited to post-production color grading
    • Eterna Bleach Bypass: Refines the standard Eterna look with a higher key, higher contrast feeling while maintaining the overall desaturated look
    • Acros: Based on the popular B&W film, this monochrome mode has a distinct tonality and graininess and can be used along with Yellow, Red, and Green contrast filter effects
    • B&W: Straightforward and classic black and white effect with Yellow, Red, and Green contrast filter options
    • Sepia: Everyone's favorite old-timey look mimicking the popular alternative process

In addition to simulating specific film types, a Grain Effect mode is also available to replicate the look of old film photos with an organic textured appearance, which is especially noticeable when printing. Color Chrome and Color Chrome Blue effects are also available to deepen color, tonal response, and gradation with higher saturation colors.

FUJIFILM XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Lens

Mixing versatility, speed, and a sleek design, the XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS from FUJIFILM is a flexible 27-84mm-equivalent standard zoom for X-mount mirrorless cameras. Its bright f/2.8-4 maximum aperture range suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also helps to keep the overall and size and weight of the lens down. In regard to optics, this zoom features three aspherical elements and one extra-low dispersion element, which help to control spherical and chromatic aberrations in order to improve sharpness and clarity. A Super EBC coating also improves contrast and color neutrality by reducing flare and ghosting when working in strong lighting conditions. Additionally, benefitting use in a variety of situations, a linear motor delivers quick and quiet autofocus performance and a five stop-effective image stabilization system minimizes the appearance of camera shake.

Standard zoom is designed for APS-C-format Fujifilm X-mount mirrorless cameras and offers a 27-84mm equivalent focal length range.
One extra-low dispersion element is used to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce high clarity and color fidelity throughout the zoom range.
Three aspherical elements control distortion and spherical aberrations, which helps to improve sharpness and realize more accurate rendering.
Super EBC coating has been applied to individual elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
A linear motor autofocus system, coupled with an internal focusing design, delivers smooth, near-silent performance that is especially beneficial to video applications and when working in noise-sensitive areas.
Complemented by an enhanced gyro sensor and unique series of algorithms, the optical stabilization system minimizes the appearance of camera shake by up to four stops to enable sharper imaging when working with longer focal lengths or slower shutter speeds.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out-of-focus quality to benefit the use of selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques.

FUJIFILM X-S10 Reviews

Great photos, annoying IBIS hum and clunk

By David
Rated 4 out of 5
Date: 2023-09-15

This camera takes great photos. The grip and articulating screen are quite nice. The optical viewfinder is fantastic. The video capability is not as good as I expected, there is quite a bit of rolling shutter and the menu systems are slightly confusing. Works great for still photos. Absolutely fantastic color and resolution. Very low sensor noise even at high ISO. I have to say that the hum and clunk associated with the in-body image stabilization (IBIS), as well as the associated extra battery drain, are not worth it. It always feels like something is loose inside in the chassis. If I could do it over again I probably would have gotten the XT-30 without IBIS. I don't think IBIS is doing a whole lot for me in terms of getting sharper photos. You have to be very very stable to start out with because IBIS can only do so much. So if you are trying to shoot in high wind, or with high heart rate while hiking, or from a slowly moving vehicle IBIS isn't going to help much at all. And frankly I think the OIS in the Fuji lenses does a better job than IBIS. IBIS doesn't seem to be helping much with my non-stabilized lenses either. But IBIS is burning up my battery faster, and making noises. And it can't really be turned off because it is holding the sensor in place.

Versatile but capable

I purchased this camera about 6 months ago as my first interchangeable lens camera. The IBIS and sensor quality were big selling points for me, and they did not disappoint. The camera has a few flaws (like autofocus on fast moving subjects), but it is well rounded and overall I am satisfied with this purchase. Also, the 18-55mm kit lens was just what I needed to start off.

Upgraded to an X-S10... not an X-T5

By Marcelo

After my trusty X-T30 started acting up I was ready to upgrade to the X-T5... until I didn't, and went for the X-S10. After watching and reading tons of reviews, I decided on the X-S10. A few reasons: - The grip! What a difference the grip makes with longer and heavier lenses, or just for single-handed operation - Same IBIS as the X-T4, which was perfectly fine until a couple of months ago (and still is) - Small and light, almost as light as my X-T30 - 26MP is more than enough for my application (amateur, photography only). Keeps file sizes relatively small and efficient. - Much improved autofocus compared to the X-T30 - Same battery as the X-T30 - Saved enough to buy better glass - Reasonable number of customizable buttons - Still has a pop-up flash (which the X-T5 doesn't) - great for casual daytime use - Did I mention the grip? There are a few cons but I consider them minor: - Lower EVF resolution and size compared to X-T5 (same as my old X-T30 so I'm ok with that) - Poor battery life (probably due to IBIS) The PSAM dials work great and with 4 custom slots I can switch between completely different settings with a single click - way more powerful and faster than the analog controls on my X-T30. Overall I am extremely happy with my purchase. Also kudos to B&H for their support and fast response in solving an issue that turned out to be my own mistake.

Best daily combo XS10 + 1855

By Yayang

After shooting so many cameras (Canon RP, P, R6, R5; Sony A74; Fuji X100V, XS10, XT4), I always bring this camera together with XF1855 lens everyday due to the follow reasons: 1. Extremely light weighted and compact. I can put the combo inside my jacket or hide it inside my sleeve. When holding with single hand, I don't recall any weight burdens. 2. Ergonomics. Sooooo easy to hold. Best ergonomics among all my cameras. 3. Good looking. It's good looking no matter if I hold it or put it down. Even it's not as pretty as XT4, it does look low profile so I can bring it in any situations. 4. Extremely practical lens. XF1855 zoom lens, together with image stabilization and max aperture of 2.8 at 18mm, is much more practical than prime lens or heavier zoom lens in daily usage. 5. Nice color. Best SOOC color among all my cameras. This makes photography extremely enjoyable. 6. Build-in flash. Its built-in pop up flash is a deal breaker. I almost always use it. Wow, the end result sometimes matches with my Profoto flash. 7. Reasonable price. Due to the inexpensive price, I am not afraid to bring it everyday in tough situations.

Incomplete Kit

By Brian
Rated 3 out of 5
Date: 2023-01-02

I suppose it's my fault for not thoroughly reading but a "kit" should be photo ready and have a memory card and an actual charger. My fault for not noticing I suppose. Every charger I have is USB C to USB C which means the charging cable didn't work for me. Also, the camera can't take a picture without a memory card. Not being able to use a gift on Christmas is not pleasant for the recipient.

Exactly what I wanted

I did a great amount of research before choosing this camera. After finally choosing this one, I am pleased with my decision. Its build quality it amazing and it can take great pictures. However, I am disappointed it does not come with a wall charger for the battery and it lacks weather sealing, but over all it's a great camera.

Little Powerhouse!!!

By John

This little monster is exactly what I have been craving. A strong photography camera from Fujifilm that doesn't break the bank. This is my first Fujifilm camera, I come from Sony and BMD, but even then I am a filmmaker not a photographer so I have been wanting something in the photography realm that I could have fun with. Fujifilms built in film replications are beautiful, creating stunning imagery straight out of the camera. It's video abilities are limited but that's what the XS20 is for. I bought this puppy for my euro trip and it has not at all disappointed. I'll probably be a lifelong Fujifilm fan from this point on because they have done a wonderful job at sticking to their roots with their in-camera film simulations, making shooting fun and creative in the field. 10/10 , no regertz.

How is the video stabilization for shooting ...

How is the video stabilization for shooting handheld videos at events such as family or travel? Does it look as smooth as the GoPro 10 or a a good quality consumer camcorder?

The following unit offer a very aggressive 5-Axis In-Body Image Stabilization. shooting in rough elements is no longer an issue along side low light shooting. Very good quality for a pro consumer based product.

Asked by: roy
The X-S10 has built-in image stabilization, a built-in flash, slower slow-motion video, a deeper grip, minimalist styling, fully articulating screen, and is more compact in size; while the X-T3 has dual memory cards, traditional Fuji dials, tilting screen, weather-sealing, a headphone input jack, higher viewfinder magnification with higher resolution, and a faster maximum flash sync speed of 1/250 sec (1/3 stop faster than the 1/180 sec flash sync speed on the X-S10).

Can the multiple film simulations be saved with one shot to the SD card?
Asked by: Jay
Johnathan's reply is well-stated. As the Fujifilm X-S10 Mirrorless Digital Camera has not yet been released as of the date/time of this reply, the instruction manual for the X-S10 is not yet available, so I cannot give you the exact steps for the X-S10, but you may use the link Jonathan included below to view the look of the menus that should be in the camera, and when the instruction manual is released, you may view the actual instructions for Film Simulation Bracketing. If you wish to have the images saved on the memory card, you would have to follow the in-camera Film Simulation Bracketing feature. The RAW or RAW+JPEG option would require a computer and would not be completed in-camera on the SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card.

Asked by: John
The LCD screen included with the FUJIFILM X-S10 Mirrorless Camera with 18-55mm Lens is a fully articulating screen, so yes, it may be angled both up and down when facing both toward the front or toward the rear of the camera.
