The flash has a rugged physical design equivalent to the dust and water-resistance of the EOS-1D-series camera bodies. Its improved user interface incorporates an updated joystick design, display, and control layout and it features a tunable LED modeling lamp to help previsualize the lighting. Canon EL-1 Reviews

A great flash for the Professional photographer

I have been using Canon since the early 90's and also the flashes and always upgraded to their latest. This flash is on point. I read from some that this flash is a bit heavy but that's because they have noodle arms. you are getting a incredible flash that will not disappoint. I shoot all over the world carry two cameras over the shoulder with these flashes to boot. Never an issue. You want strong images that pop then this is the baby. My main reason was the batteries that well just added more weight to my camera bag as I shoot so much corporate work that I went through batteries like crazy. I am not a wedding photographer but my clients are demanding and I charge a-lot so I get the best. You will not be disappointed. If it's too heavy then get to the Gym!!!!

Love this flash because of the weather-sealed design, the cooling system, and the rechargeable batteries. The rechargeable battery is more convenient than a bunch of AA batteries, provides lots of shots, promotes faster recycle times, and is convenient as it utilizes the same charger as the batteries for the R5/R6 cameras.

thank you very much

Excellent strobe, links easily with other Canon strobes. The back screen might look confusing at first, but you'll master it quickly. Now if Canon could just come out with like 200 or 400w strobe you'll never need another lighting company

Great flash with tradeoffs

I purchased two EL-1's to round out a new set of R5 kits I use almost exclusively for high profile professional event photography. The thing I LOVE most with the R5 and Canon flashes is that TTL is finally a reliable option for me. Beautiful images time after time (even white faces in black tuxedos look great). I broked these flashes in by using one master and one slaved on a lightstick with an assistant. Pics were incredible and battery life exceeded my expectations. I shot about 2000 images on TTL and only changed batteries once with a large amount remaining on the 2nd battery when finished. The biggest disadvantage of this flash is the weight and size. Far larger than my current 600EX-II's. It almost negates the weight advantages of the R5 in my opinion but I'm willing to make the trade off. Are you?

I like it but......

Long time Canon user. 580EX, 580EX II, 600EX RT, 600EX II RT. Made the substantial jump to the EL-1 fully expecting it to perform as good as the 600EX II RT's but as I checked it out before a job it would lose the wireless link more times than I would like from fairly short distances (10 - 15 feet) Once while I was standing right next to it. At the wedding it performed well in and around the hotel. At the outdoor formals at the venue it lost connection 6 or 7 times and I was never more than 15 or so feet away from it. Turning the flash off then on reconnected it. In the reception it performed well as well as back outside for night shots but recycle time slowed down as the battery went below halfway but it was still way faster than the 600's. So overall I like it but for the money I am disappointed with the wireless performance.

Asked by: Raul
Yes you can but you would need another pocket wizard to connect to the sync port on the Canon EL-1, but then you can trigger it remotely with the Pocket Wizard Plus III.

Im NEW to this. Does this amazing flash really require a separate purchase of an external battery power bank? or are the rechargeable batteries good enough to get by with, provided we bring 2 or 3 with us on-site?
Asked by: Jimmy
Unfortunately, you've not given us enough information to go on to properly assess your battery/power requirements. The Canon EL-1 speedlight's rechargeable LP-EL battery lasts 335 shots at full power. Depending on your requirements, you might require a few extra batteries to last the day/event.

I can't figure out how to get the IR beam activate with any flash I currently own with the Canon R5. Is it neccisary to use this flash in order to get the beam in a dark room?
Asked by: David
Unfortunately, infrared auto-focus assist beams will not trigger or work in tandem with mirrorless cameras. This is unfortunately a limitation of mirrorless technology.
