Canon EL-1 Overview

Power, connectivity, and reliability, the Canon Speedlite EL-1 is an on-camera E-TTL / E-TTL II-compatible flash characterized by its flexibility to suit a variety of lighting needs. Featuring a xenon flashtube, greater exposure stability is possible along with a powerful guide number of 197' at ISO 100 and versatile exposure control from full 1/1 power down to 1/8192 power. Also distinct, the EL-1 utilizes the LP-EL rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack to promote shorter recycle times of around 0.9 sec, approximately 335 flashes per charge, and it contributes to improved thermal management and the flash's active cooling system.

The EL-1 fully supports EL-series RT flashes via its built in radio trigger and receiver. It can trigger up to 15 RT-series receiver Speedlites to produce light freely even when not attached to the camera. For even more creative possibilities, the EL-1 features Second-Curtain Sync. The flash has a rugged physical design equivalent to the dust and water-resistance of the EOS-1D-series camera bodies. Its improved user interface incorporates an updated joystick design, display, and control layout and it features a tunable LED modeling lamp to help previsualize the lighting. Additionally, the flash head can fully swivel 180° left and right, bounce upward 120°, and it includes a built-in wide panel.

Canon EL-1 Reviews

I like it but......

Long time Canon user. 580EX, 580EX II, 600EX RT, 600EX II RT. Made the substantial jump to the EL-1 fully expecting it to perform as good as the 600EX II RT's but as I checked it out before a job it would lose the wireless link more times than I would like from fairly short distances (10 - 15 feet) Once while I was standing right next to it. At the wedding it performed well in and around the hotel. At the outdoor formals at the venue it lost connection 6 or 7 times and I was never more than 15 or so feet away from it. Turning the flash off then on reconnected it. In the reception it performed well as well as back outside for night shots but recycle time slowed down as the battery went below halfway but it was still way faster than the 600's. So overall I like it but for the money I am disappointed with the wireless performance.

thank you very much

Excellent strobe, links easily with other Canon strobes. The back screen might look confusing at first, but you'll master it quickly. Now if Canon could just come out with like 200 or 400w strobe you'll never need another lighting company

Good and Bad

I have the 600 and 600 II and shoot mainly events. I decided to get this one for the better recycle time and cooling. So it does help in that way. The disappointments are: 1) The housing up by the lens is separate parts-- at the red line it can separate as did mine during an event. 2) it seems to show cosmetic wear fairly quickly-- on both the housing and the screen. The screen seems to mark fairly easily as compared to previous models, 3) movement of the head for varying bounces/angles is pretty much to Canon's set positions. It doesn't hold a mid-position easily. Part of this is the weight of the head vs. the resistance in the movement. Also at first it was difficult to unlock and move the head. This seems to have gotten better with use. Much of these complaints are from comparison to using the 600 II which had become second nature. This speedlite requires a little more break in and learning than previous models.

Worth the money!

Great Flash

Love this flash because of the weather-sealed design, the cooling system, and the rechargeable batteries. The rechargeable battery is more convenient than a bunch of AA batteries, provides lots of shots, promotes faster recycle times, and is convenient as it utilizes the same charger as the batteries for the R5/R6 cameras.

Yes you can but you would need another pocket wizard to connect to the sync port on the Canon EL-1, but then you can trigger it remotely with the Pocket Wizard Plus III.

Im NEW to this. Does this amazing flash really require a separate purchase of an external battery power bank? or are the rechargeable batteries good enough to get by with, provided we bring 2 or 3 with us on-site?
Asked by: Jimmy
Unfortunately, you've not given us enough information to go on to properly assess your battery/power requirements. The Canon EL-1 speedlight's rechargeable LP-EL battery lasts 335 shots at full power. Depending on your requirements, you might require a few extra batteries to last the day/event.

I can't figure out how to get the IR beam activate with any flash I currently own with the Canon R5. Is it neccisary to use this flash in order to get the beam in a dark room?
Asked by: David
Unfortunately, infrared auto-focus assist beams will not trigger or work in tandem with mirrorless cameras. This is unfortunately a limitation of mirrorless technology.
