Ricoh GR III Overview

Extend your shooting sessions with the Ricoh GR III Digital Camera with Extra Battery Kit, from B&H, which bundles the advanced compact camera with an additional battery.

Ricoh GR III Digital Camera

The long-awaited installment in the popular series of fast, compact cameras, the Ricoh GR III continues the legacy of being a pocketable powerhouse, offering impressive image quality, fast response, and immense portability. Featuring a redeveloped imaging feature-set, the GR III incorporates a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and GR Engine 6 to realize smooth tonality, rich color and high sensitivity from ISO 100-102400, along with the ability to produce high-resolution 14-bit DNG stills or Full HD video. Complementing the sensor design is an 18.3mm, f/2.8 prime lens, which has a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 28mm. Additionally, a first for GR, a 3-axis Shake Reduction System compensates for the effects of camera shake to help render sharper handheld shots when working with slower shutter speeds.

Physically, the GR III looks familiarly compact, but incorporates a redesigned control scheme to promote a larger, more comfortable grip while maintaining easy access to physical controls. A 3.0" 1.037m-dot LCD is used for image composition, playback, and menu navigation, and its touchscreen design offers intuitive control along with Touch AF capabilities. Additionally, built-in Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi can be used to pair with a mobile device for quick, wireless transferring of files to your smartphone or tablet.

24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor and GR Engine 6
Featuring an updated design, a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor pairs with a new GR Engine 6 to produce high-resolution 14-bit DNG or JPEG stills with impressive tonality, natural color rendering, and high sensitivity from ISO 100-102400. In addition to full-resolution, wide-angle images, a pair of useful crop modes—35mm at 15MP and 50mm at 7MP—let you simulate the look of working with longer focal lengths.

In addition to stills shooting, the GR III is also capable of recording Full HD 1080 video at 60p, 30p, and 24p frame rates.
Prime Wide-Angle Lens
A fixed prime 18.3mm lens offers a comfortable 28mm equivalent wide-angle lens, which is complemented by a bright f/2.8 maximum aperture to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions. The optical construction incorporates six elements in four groups, including two aspherical elements that help to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and accurate rendering. Two focusing modes also suit working with general subjects, from 3.9" to infinity, while a dedicated macro setting benefits working with close-up subjects within a 2.4-4.7" range. An internal two stop-effective (ND 0.6) filter is also available for either slowing the shutter speed or permitting working with a wider aperture setting, and the lens has a nine-blade diaphragm to contribute to a smooth bokeh quality. Additionally, the redeveloped lens design also results in greater contrast and measures 1.5mm thinner than previous GR/GR II digital cameras.
Shake Reduction System
Featured for the first time in a GR camera, a 3-axis Shake Reduction System helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake in order to promote sharper handheld shooting at slower shutter speeds. The Shake Reduction System has been optimized for use with the built-in 28mm-equivalent lens, which renders it smaller and more effective. Additionally, the SR unit also offers moiré reduction and dust removal capabilities.
Body Design
  • The hallmark feature of the GR-series has been its compact, pocketable size while still retaining a large image sensor and bright prime lens.
  • Integrated 3.0" 1.037m-dot LCD features a capacitive touchscreen design for intuitive, familiar operation during shooting, playback, and menu navigation.
  • The rear layout of the camera has been completely redesigned and prioritizes a larger, more comfortable thumb grip along with easily accessible physical dials. Additionally, the ADJ lever, FN button, and Touch AF operations can be programmed to handle specific assignable functions for more personalized control.
  • Start-up time has been reduced to 0.8 sec and Hybrid AF performance has been quickened for more seamless operation.
  • Integrated Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi afford wireless connectivity between the camera and a paired mobile device, and allows you to embed location info within your files as well as transfer files to your mobile device, even when the camera is turned off.
  • Included DB-110 rechargeable lithium-ion battery offers approximately 200 shots per charge.
  • USB Type-C port allows you to transfer files or recharge the battery in-camera.

Ricoh GR III Reviews

Fabulous every day camera

I purchased this a while ago on a whim, but rarely used it and let it collect dust. After moving to NYC, I took it out because I could palm it/slide it into my pocket or purse and go on walks. Eventually, I completely turned off the display and would simply point and shoot in the general direction of visually interesting things as an exercise in being more present with my surroundings. Both the color and B&W turn out quite lovely with a unique character requiring minimal editing. It is just...fun. It strips away all the complexities of my main camera for serious shooting and lets you return to the childhood/teen era of disposable cameras and taking photos just to see what will happen.  Is it flawless? No. The app can be a little finicky, the autofocus struggles in low light, and it can be a little slippery (I got an aluminum thumb piece that slots into the hot shoe and also swapped out for a fun black and red color combo). You're not going to be shooting sports or anything super motion heavy with this unless you like a challenge, but that is what I use my Canon for. This camera went from being a waste of money to something I rarely leave home without. It brings me so much joy when I review the random photos I've acquired throughout the day and has led me to view my lived environment in a new light.

Great camera

This is the smallest great image producing camera I have ever used. I am very pleased with its ease of use, features, and most importantly, the raw images it produces.

Bad autofocus!!!

This camera would be basically perfect if the autofocus was radically faster than it is. I bought this camera because my favorite still life/architecture photographer uses it exclusively for his work, and his work is stunning, and I know from my own use that the camera is capable of taking fantastic photos, but my work is almost exclusively candid people photos at music events, and the autofocus on this camera just isn't fast/accurate enough. It would literally be worth it to me to purchase a whole new updated model (i.e. GR IV) of this camera if that camera had fast accurate autofocus. One more suggestion is it would be great if the camera's built-in microphones (for video recording) were much better than they currently are. I shot video of a band's live performance with both this camera and also my (2015) iPhone 7, and the iPhone's audio was radically better than this camera, and the iPhone's video image stabilization was also radically better than the video from the Ricoh, so the iPhone video was the keeper footage. Since it is impossible to get external audio into the Ricoh, I think the built-in mics should be semi-decent, like as good as the mics in my iPhone. In regards to the image stabilization on the Ricoh, I will say that for normal photography, it works great.

Well, this is a well publicized, and highly coveted P&S camera well covered in the photo press, YT, IG, and more. So, what could I possibly add? I wanted so badly to not like this camera, so much in fact I rented one to take on a long overdue visit to NYC last fall, hoping I would not be taken in by it's unique "X factor". Well, I was. So much so, with a rented GR III in my pocket, I visited BH Photo and shopped the GRIII vs the GRIIIX and due to my indecision between them I left BH with only the same rented GRIII I walked in with. Fast forward some 7 months, and my "crush" on this unique camera never waned, and NOW....longtime out-of-stock situations at BH, and everywhere else. Having gained matrimonial (CFO) approval I added my name to the BH "notify me" list and as soon as these (GRIII....28 mm equiv version, decision made!) became I ordered one and it's here, and I'm ready to shoot with it. I mainly shoot wildlife....so this is a camera that wont be used within my normal use-case, but rather for travel (like the one I rented last fall) and as a daily or near daily carry on my bicycle rides, day trips NOT involving birding or wildlife, and family get togethers. The Ricoh GR series, despite some baked in shortcomings like lack of EVF or flash, no weather seal etc, is a fun shooter which can deliver amazing images and juicy raw files. As far as BH goes? They rock. Never an issue, ever. And Im glad I've been inside of their store so I know exactly where my GR III came from, despite me not buying it in person there last fall. It was still an amazing stop on my trip to NYC. So, if you're on-the-fence re a Ricoh GR, go to BH and try one in their showroom, and if thats not a possibility rent one from a camera rental service, and then when you love it....order from BH.

A Very Capable Camera

I've been surprised how often I reach for this camera. True, I have to live with 28mm (or 35mm or 50mm), no zoom, but just doesn't seem to get in the way. Image quality is very good. So small--but not too small. As handy as a phone camera, but with an APS-C sensor and output of 24 clean megapixels. I *love* the Full Press Snap feature because I can take quick shots and know all will be in focus from 2 feet to infinity. It took a little trial and error, then I settled on 1.5m for Snap Focus Distance and aperture priority f/16. For shutter speed I set a minimum of 1/250th. Of course, perfect for street shooting.

Thinking about Ricoh for family/casual photos, 1. Has the AF got any better since launch? 2. Is video total garbage for casual use? Shooting kids/family, is that doable with this camera? Want something super pocketable for capture memories (not streets). Thoughts?

The Ricoh GR III Digital Camera autofocus is very good. And as for a pocket camera to take with you I feel a good one. Note the lens is a fixed 28mm lens, very sharp but not a zoom. So, if you do want to take shots that are further away that might not be best for you.

Will the charger support 220 240 volt countries?
Asked by: Abdullah
According to page 150 of the Ricoh GR III Digital Camera Operation Manual, the USB Power Adapter AC-U1/AC-U2 included with the camera's purchase comes with a power supply compatible for use with 100-240 V (50/60 Hz), 0.2 A AC power supply. As such, it may be used internationally; however, you may need to purchase a power plug adapter designed for the outlet type used in the country in which you will be charging the camera.
