Compact, lightweight, and close-focusing, the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM is a sleek normal-length prime offering a classic, versatile field of view and an especially compact design. An ideal lens for every day, walkaround shooting, this 50mm f/1.8 is characterized by its bright design for available light shooting and apt depth of field control. The optical design incorporates one aspherical element, which reduces spherical aberrations and distortion, and also sports a Super Spectra coating to minimize flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy. Also, an STM motor affords impressively quiet and smooth autofocus performance and full-time manual focus override. Additionally, a configurable Control Ring lets you adjust exposure settings, including ISO, aperture, and exposure compensation, from the lens itself.

Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM Reviews
Nifty as always
Such a great walk around lens.
Cheap, slow and noisy
Maybe I got a lemon? I am used to the Canon 50mm/F1.4 EF lens and this one I got for my EOS R to minimize the bulk when I travel (my other travel lens I upgraded to the most excellent RF 24-70mm/F2.8 L IS lens from its EF cousin). This lens is noisy, slow as molasses and very cheaply made. I don't know who reviews these things (very peeved with the online reviews), but not anywhere close to the quality of the 50mm/F1.4 EF lens. I will likely return this and wait for a better lens from Canon. It looks like I will need to carry my EF-RF adapter with my 50mm F1.4 EF lens anyway.
So far so good
I like the looks of the EF 1.4 version better, but I had issues with two of the EF's stop focusing over a few years of use. I wish this was a 1.4 as well, but it functions well and is quieter than the EF 1.4. For what I paid during a recent sale ($159), it was a safe bet that paid off.
Amazing all rounder
Great all rounder and very good for portraits. Great quality product.
Surprised
What a surprise! I bought this lens because I thought it was a cheap way to be able to photograph indoors without a flash. I was so surprised when I used it not only for indoors, but oh my folders came out wonderfully.
Good product
Works as described at a good value for the money.
So far So good
This 50mm lens was reduced in price and decided to go for it for my new R8. So far I am enjoying it. I like that is has a f/1.8 and so far have been enjoying using it. This is not a flashy lens and it is not L glass, not that I noticed. It's a good nifty fifty and extremely lightweight and portable.
The Nifty-Fifty
Everyone knows about the EF version and the RF version still delivers. There's nothing else to say about this lens. If you know, you know.
