Compact, lightweight, and close-focusing, the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM is a sleek normal-length prime offering a classic, versatile field of view and an especially compact design. An ideal lens for every day, walkaround shooting, this 50mm f/1.8 is characterized by its bright design for available light shooting and apt depth of field control. The optical design incorporates one aspherical element, which reduces spherical aberrations and distortion, and also sports a Super Spectra coating to minimize flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy. Also, an STM motor affords impressively quiet and smooth autofocus performance and full-time manual focus override. Additionally, a configurable Control Ring lets you adjust exposure settings, including ISO, aperture, and exposure compensation, from the lens itself.

Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM Reviews
Best deal ever!
There's a reason why it's called a nifty fifty. For $150 it's absolutely a steal. Of course it doesn't have image stabilization but that is to be expected. Very compact and great to bring with you anywhere, especially for travel. Can make great portraits and still pretty good for landscape or city photo. More wider lens would be preferred though.
The most brilliant concept ever
If you know what you are doing, you can buy this lens today, take it with you to capture some event, and return your investment the very same day. 50 mm is the focal length when people start looking good, and f/1.8 is just enough to blur the background (in most cases). F/2.8 is impressive, and this is - two times better and 20 times less expensive. Some strange reviews are complaining that the edges are soft at f/1.8. As a photographer, I know that if I'm using f/1.8 there is something important in the center and the rest should be soft. If there are several people that can fill the entire frame, you need higher f to compensate the distance anyway, thus... I don't understand the complain. Some people are complaining about vignetting, which is also your friend. Back to the lens itself. It's amazingly small, because it doesn't need the adapter and with the focusing ring becoming "a universal ring" it's completely changing ergonomics and the way camera can be used. For this price, it's unbeatable.
Good, inexpensive 50
This is a very good lens for the price. It's reasonably sharp, but not necessarily tack sharp wide open, but stop down a little bit it performs very well in the center and edges. It's a very good, inexpensive all around lens. It does not have stabilization, so on a non stabilized body like my RP, you'll have to shoot at faster speeds ( and correspondingly higher ISOs) than you may prefer. It's inexpensive enough that it makes a great fast complementary lens to the 24-105f7.1, and takes up minimal space in a camera bag. As an advanced amateur, I'd recommend this to anyone short of people who make their living with their gear.
Nifty 50
I think I have purchased a 50 1.8 with every camera I have ever owned. Got this one as a walk around lens to use with my R6. There are times when I hate lugging around a 28-70 2.8 and this is a great light weight option. Really small filter size though (43mm). So I had to get a new UV filter for it.
Multi-functional Everyday Lens
Light, compact prime lens. Easy to always have in your pocket as you're out taking pictures. On my R6 the pictures come out crisp and clean.
Best Bang for the Buck
Outstanding lens that reminds me of the film days when a 50mm was the lens that came with just about every SLR camera sold. Coupled with my Canon RP am able to take beautiful low light photographs without the need for artificial light. You will not find a better lens at that price.
Pleasant Surprise
Canon's RF 50mm f/1.8 STM deserves your attention. If you are a professional with unlimited resources, not so much. If you are looking for a lens that sizewise replicates what your eye sees, this lens does that. It is inconspicuous. It is lightweight. It very nicely fits the RP body size. Stealth. I like to store lenses with their lens hood. Most storage devices do not allow this - they are fitted to the lens and caps only, why? Regardless, I found one that's perfect. It even comes with a removable padded open loop which make the vertical fit ideal. And the hood fits. Try the BPAULL BL-0003, inner dia. 3.35" x 4.53" height. The Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens is an absolute price beater. It is a pretty sharp lens, especially for the remarkable price. It is well made, feels solid to the hand, a useful tool. Carry it anywhere with no fuss. It's a pleasant surprise.
Close tolerances????
I purchased this lens because of the good reviews and the fact that I could get a good prime lens for $150. As is their way, B&H shipped and delivered the fastest of anyone! I immediately mounted it on my new R7. I found the lens quite tight on the camera, very tight. I was afraid to apply any more muscle for fear of damaging the camera but it did finally mount properly and it functioned as expected. The performance of the lens is very good, clarity, bokeh etc. I have removed the lens and reinstalled it a few times and it has definitely loosened up but is still harder to twist on than any of my other lenses.
