Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Overview

By B&H Photo's

Popular for its reach and flexibility, the Canon RF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM is a fresh take on this well-regarded focal length, featuring an impressively sleek and lightweight form factor perfect for their full-frame mirrorless cameras. The constant f/4 maximum aperture strikes a balance between being bright enough for available light shooting while also contributing to the especially portable, handholdable design. Optically, this lens incorporates four UD elements, which suppress a variety of aberrations throughout the zoom range for high clarity, and an Air Sphere Coating is also featured to reduce flare and ghosting. Balancing the distinguished optical system is a Dual Nano USM focus system, which delivers fast, nearly silent autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this 70-200mm is weather-sealed and has a fluorine coating to protect the front and rear elements.

Note:
In December of 2021, firmware update 1.1.0 added two key improvements. Please see the Features section below for details. Depending on when you received your lens, it may already have this firmware version. You can check the version in the camera menu, as instructed in the manual.

Key Features

Versatile telephoto zoom lens is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless cameras.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture affords consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also contributes to the relatively lightweight design and compact form factor.
Four UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) elements help to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to provide greater clarity and color accuracy.
An Air Sphere Coating (ASC) has been applied to lens elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by 5 stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Also, when working with select cameras, up to 7.5 stops of stabilization may be available with the Coordinated Optical Image Stabilizer and In-Body Image Stabilizer.
Dual Nano USM system utilizes both a ring type USM and an STM mechanism to realize quick and accurate focusing that is also smooth and nearly silent to suit both photography and video applications. This focusing system also affords full-time manual focus control when working in the one-shot AF mode.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
Protective fluorine coating has been applied to the front and rear element to resist fingerprints and smudges and to make cleaning these elements significantly easier.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens has a weather-resistant design that protects against dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions.

Firmware Update 1.1.0 (December 2021)

Adds an electronic full-time manual focus function (a function that enables constant manual focus adjustment in both one-shot AF and servo AF), which is enabled when using the EOS R5, EOS R6, and EOS R3 cameras.
Improves an issue in which the background is not blurred when performing slow panning with the IS (Image Stabilization) mode set to Mode 2 or Mode 3.

Light and small, I love it .The picture quality is also very good.

Great sharp lens

This lens is quite light, well-balanced, and a joy to use. Pictures are worth more than words: this shot of a red-bellied woodpecker on my backyard feeder was taken handheld with an EOS R5, f4.5, ISO 500, and 1/1000, through a glass slider. Enough said.

The reviews don't lie.

I read multiple reviews and articles describing this zoom lens. I tend to go through analysis paralysis when planning a major purchase, and I wanted to be thoroughly sure what to expect. I opted for the f/4 vs the f/2.8 as it seemed to meet my needs at a less expensive price. I have the 24 - 105 f/4 L paired with the Canon R6 and am spoiled by how sharp it is. Both lenses perform beautifully. I'd considered a longer zoom (maybe later) but for now the reach is adequate and the images seem super crisp edge to edge. In many cases, I can crop down to less than 20% of the frame to get a clean photo result despite it only going to 200mm. There was so much praise for this lens in the reviews I read, like many, my expectations have been exceeded. Great glass!

Great Lens for sure!

This lens is super sharp, easy to use, and is way lighter than my old 70-200 EOS lens for my old Canon. I recommend this to use with the Canon R series.

Impressive Lens.

I have paired my R6 with the Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens and it is a stellar combination. I recently migrated from years of using Nikon Cameras and Lenses to a Canon Mirrorless System and the change over is going well. Really pleased!

Feels like a 2.8!

This lens is amazingly sharp, with excellent bokeh both behind and in front of the subject as you can see from the pic I uploaded. The constant f4 on an R5 feels like shooting with a f2.8 on a traditional DSLR. At first I thought I would miss the f2.8. But with the IS+IBIS that this f4 lens offers with the R5, you easily gain 2-3 stops of light with slower shutter speeds with no issue. The only drawback I can see is if you do a lot of night sport or wildlife photography where you need the extra stop of light to support faster shutter speeds and for some reason you can't use higher ISO. However, so far I haven't run into that issue when combining this lens with the R5.

I bought this lens to replace my aging EF 70-40 f4 L. So far, I'm delighted by what it's produced. It is razor sharp, light, and compact. The IS coupled with my R5's in-body IS, means that I don't have to lug around a monopod or a tripod. I'm also very impressed by how quickly this lens autofocuses, much faster than the old 70-40. Finally, the close focusing ability of this lens enables me to photograph subjects as small as insects and individual flowers. It's by no means a macro lens but it does a great job as a closeup accessory.

mounted on my R5, great focusing, great color. Replaced EF 70-200 IS with 5D3 It has taken a little time to get used to mirrorless, but I am now thrilled with this new combination. Plus, there is no better place to buy than B&H
