Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Overview

Popular for its reach and flexibility, the Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM is a fresh take on this well-regarded focal length, featuring an impressively sleek and lightweight form factor perfect for their full-frame mirrorless cameras. The constant f/4 maximum aperture strikes a balance between being bright enough for available light shooting while also contributing to the especially portable, handholdable design. Complementing this is an apt Optical Image Stabilizer, which compensates for up to 5 stops of camera shake, or up to an impressive 7.5 stops of shake correction when paired with an EOS R-type body with IBIS.

Optically, this lens incorporates four UD elements, which suppress a variety of aberrations throughout the zoom range for high clarity, and an Air Sphere Coating is also featured to reduce flare and ghosting. Balancing the distinguished optical system is a Dual Nano USM focus system, which delivers fast, nearly silent autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this 70-200mm is weather-sealed and has a fluorine coating to protect the front and rear elements.

Versatile telephoto zoom lens is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless cameras.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture affords consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also contributes to the relatively lightweight design and compact form factor.
Four UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) elements help to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to provide greater clarity and color accuracy.
An Air Sphere Coating (ASC) has been applied to lens elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by 5 stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Also, when working with select cameras, up to 7.5 stops of stabilization may be available with the Coordinated Optical Image Stabilizer and In-Body Image Stabilizer.
Dual Nano USM system utilizes both a ring type USM and an STM mechanism to realize quick and accurate focusing that is also smooth and nearly silent to suit both photography and video applications. This focusing system also affords full-time manual focus control when working in the one-shot AF mode.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
Protective fluorine coating has been applied to the front and rear element to resist fingerprints and smudges and to make cleaning these elements significantly easier.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens has a weather-resistant design that protects against dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions.

Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Reviews

The modern sweet spot?

For years with my older DSLR I lusted after the F/2.8 EF mount version of this lens. That older camera really NEEDED all the light it could get in some circumstances. Now, however, with the advances in sensor technology, and de-noise software advances, the only reason you NEED F/2.8 is if you really want that narrow a focal plane. Mostly, I don't need it, and this lens is a lot lighter than the other version. Images are sharp, tones are natural, and there really is a reason that 70-200 is a popular zoom - it's the right focal length for so many situations. Although it has not been the first RF mount lens I purchased, I can see this being the cornerstone of my RF lens arsenal.

I Absolutely Love This Lens

This is an outstanding addition to the Canon RF lineup. I am blown away by the quality of the images I am getting along with my Canon R5. I was a bit concerned by the lack of a tripod collar. But the lens is light and compact & the collar is not needed. In fact I find the lens a bit easier to handle than the Canon RF 24 - 70 MM f2.8 lens. It's now time to sell my Canon EF 70 - 200 f2.8 lens, which has served me very well.

Tack sharp and light as a feather!

Since receiving this lens I have put it on one of my R5s and it has not come off! This lens is tack sharp and so light it has become my main walk-around lens! The level of detail coming from this lens is nothing short of amazing, and the contrast and colors rendered by it are pure and natural! The attached image of a wild black vulture was shot at ISO 640, f/4, 1/500 at 200mm, and is cropped for display here so you can see the level of detail. In every other way (apart from my watermark) it is as it came straight out of the camera as a JPG file. I did not add any contrast, color, sharpening, or any other enhancement in post. If you don't need the extra stop of light the f/2.8 gives you, please consider this lens. You won't be disappointed!

Outstanding Lens

This lens is all I hoped it would be. Sharp, relatively compact (when not extended) and well built. My only gripe would be that it extends when zoomed, but I guess that is necessary due to it being compact when not zoomed. Highly recommend.

Canon RF 70-200 f/4L Is USM is super sharp

The Canon RF 70-200 f/4L Is USM lens provides super sharp images with great contrast and color. Its light weight (1.5 lbs) and built in image stabilizer, combined with my R6 in-camera stabilization, allows it to be easily used hand held for great results. Its compact size lets if fit nicely into my messenger bag and doesn't weigh it down. Its a great lens for the price. The attached unprocessed photo was taken at 106mmn, 1/200 sec at f 10.

There is nothing to dislike about this lens. Nothing. I don't know if there is such a thing as lens perfection, but this comes close. I would buy it again in heartbeat if something happened to this one. It goes every where my cameras go.

Very handy lens.

This works very well for me. Lightweight, and it works as it should. I leave it on all the time.

Looking forward to some great images with this lens.

To be honest, I have only owned this zoom a very short time and have only taken a few test shots of ducks at the nearby lake, but I was very impressed with the results! I like its small size and large zoom ring. I haven't programmed the control ring yet. I look forward to putting it through its paces the next time I can get out into nature. I predict that it will get used a lot!

The lens is NOT front heavy like most 70-200, add the fact the lens is very short. This lens is 0.5" longer than the RF 24-105, same diameter and a few grams lighter. I have never heard of someone wanting a tripod mount for the RF 24-105. The camera body tripod mount works great.

Unfortunately, it seems that the shorter barrel of the new RF 70-200 does not accommodate the RF 1.4x or 2.0x teleconverters. Currently, the only three compatible RF lenses are the 100-500, 600 f/11, and 800 f/11.

Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens is also parfocal. The focus point will stay in focus when you zoom in and out, as long as the camera autofocus is not set up to focus tracking.
