Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Overview

By B&H Photo's

Popular for its reach and flexibility, the Canon RF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM is a fresh take on this well-regarded focal length, featuring an impressively sleek and lightweight form factor perfect for their full-frame mirrorless cameras. The constant f/4 maximum aperture strikes a balance between being bright enough for available light shooting while also contributing to the especially portable, handholdable design. Complementing this is an apt Optical Image Stabilizer, which compensates for up to 5 stops of camera shake, or up to an impressive 7.5 stops of shake correction when paired with an EOS R-type body with IBIS.

Optically, this lens incorporates four UD elements, which suppress a variety of aberrations throughout the zoom range for high clarity, and an Air Sphere Coating is also featured to reduce flare and ghosting. Balancing the distinguished optical system is a Dual Nano USM focus system, which delivers fast, nearly silent autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this 70-200mm is weather-sealed and has a fluorine coating to protect the front and rear elements.

Note:
In December of 2021, firmware update 1.1.0 added two key improvements. Please see the Features section below for details. Depending on when you received your lens, it may already have this firmware version. You can check the version in the camera menu, as instructed in the manual.

Key Features

Versatile telephoto zoom lens is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless cameras.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture affords consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also contributes to the relatively lightweight design and compact form factor.
Four UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) elements help to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to provide greater clarity and color accuracy.
An Air Sphere Coating (ASC) has been applied to lens elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by 5 stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Also, when working with select cameras, up to 7.5 stops of stabilization may be available with the Coordinated Optical Image Stabilizer and In-Body Image Stabilizer.
Dual Nano USM system utilizes both a ring type USM and an STM mechanism to realize quick and accurate focusing that is also smooth and nearly silent to suit both photography and video applications. This focusing system also affords full-time manual focus control when working in the one-shot AF mode.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
Protective fluorine coating has been applied to the front and rear element to resist fingerprints and smudges and to make cleaning these elements significantly easier.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens has a weather-resistant design that protects against dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions.

Firmware Update 1.1.0 (December 2021)

Adds an electronic full-time manual focus function (a function that enables constant manual focus adjustment in both one-shot AF and servo AF), which is enabled when using the EOS R5, EOS R6, and EOS R3 cameras.
Improves an issue in which the background is not blurred when performing slow panning with the IS (Image Stabilization) mode set to Mode 2 or Mode 3.

Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Reviews

Easy to carry around zoom lens

Purchased this for its size/weight. Very easy to carry around when traveling. Excellent sharpness and color rendition. No issues with maximum f 4.0 for outdoor travel and even used it indoors with EOS R5 at higher ISO without much noise (which can usually be cleaned up using Topaz DeNoise AI). Still have my EF 70-200 F 2.8 which I will use when I need to take pictures under low light conditions (e.g., indoor parties or with more subject separation from background) but this lens' easy portability allows me to take it with me more often when I previously would have left the EF lens home due to size/weight.

Nice one!

I had the EF f2.8 version and wanted to upgrade to the RF version but I went with the RF f4.0 for three reason: cheaper lighter smaller.... I like that it's small and light but still wish I had the faster f2.8 The results are pretty nice but in a darker environment you have to boost the ISO which I guess is not so bad with the R5 body....

Actually using it!!

Changing over from 5D 4 to R5 and made the hard choice to sell my EF 70-200mm L f/2.8 III. Loved that lens for the short time I had it, but it was so big and heavy that too often it didn't end up in my bag. I could cover that focal length with the 100-400mm ii and wasn't going to carry that extra weight for the speed of the 2.8. Now with the longer min focal distance of the RF 100-500, it's really nice having the compact and light RF 70-200mm f/4 along as a great companion that's getting tack sharp images and fast silent AF. So far I have not been missing the faster lens and when I have had low light conditions the ISO noise on the R5 is minimal and easy to touch up in LR. Great lens, happy to have it in my bag.

I bought this lens to replace my aging EF 70-40 f4 L. So far, I'm delighted by what it's produced. It is razor sharp, light, and compact. The IS coupled with my R5's in-body IS, means that I don't have to lug around a monopod or a tripod. I'm also very impressed by how quickly this lens autofocuses, much faster than the old 70-40. Finally, the close focusing ability of this lens enables me to photograph subjects as small as insects and individual flowers. It's by no means a macro lens but it does a great job as a closeup accessory.

mounted on my R5, great focusing, great color. Replaced EF 70-200 IS with 5D3 It has taken a little time to get used to mirrorless, but I am now thrilled with this new combination. Plus, there is no better place to buy than B&H

After a workshop in Tuscany with Mads Peter Iversen, I learned I needed to lighten the load. I love my Canon EF 2.8 trinity lenses, but they will stay at home. Shooting landscapes, it's time to take advantage of the Canon mirrorless camera system and the lightweight, quality L lenses available. I specifically purchased the RF 15-35 f2.8 for the trip and I love the lens, but looking back, taking my RF 24-105 f4, paired with this lens would have allowed me to get all the shots. After watching Dustin Abbott's reviews of both the RF 24-105 f4 and RF 70-200 f4, and seeing firsthand for myself, I think the image quality is exceptional for both lenses, so I am not compromising when capturing those foggy Tuscany landscape images. This lens will travel with me on all future trips.

The lens is NOT front heavy like most 70-200, add the fact the lens is very short. This lens is 0.5" longer than the RF 24-105, same diameter and a few grams lighter. I have never heard of someone wanting a tripod mount for the RF 24-105. The camera body tripod mount works great.

Unfortunately, it seems that the shorter barrel of the new RF 70-200 does not accommodate the RF 1.4x or 2.0x teleconverters. Currently, the only three compatible RF lenses are the 100-500, 600 f/11, and 800 f/11.

Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens is also parfocal. The focus point will stay in focus when you zoom in and out, as long as the camera autofocus is not set up to focus tracking.
