Leica Q2 Monochrom Overview

  • 1Description
  • 2Monochrom
  • 347.3MP B&W Full-Frame CMOS Sensor and Maestro II Processor
  • 4Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH. Lens
  • 5Body Design

Merging two of their most unique series, the Leica Q2 Monochrom is a full-frame compact camera fitted with a 47.3MP monochrome sensor, which is used for the sole purpose of recording vivid and rich black-and-white imagery.

Compared to a standard CMOS sensor, this specialized monochrome sensor omits the color filter array to enable recording of just luminance values in order to achieve greater visual depth and clarity, along with improved sensitivity to ISO 100,000 and reduced noise levels to suit working in difficult lighting. The sensor's design also sees the omission of an optical low-pass filter, and inclusion of an updated microlens array, which helps to produce sharper, higher resolution imagery.

Beyond its Monochrom distinction, this version of the Q2 follows a familiar path of quick and robust performance and intuitive handling. The sensor pairs with a Maestro II image processor to offer fast shooting operation up to 10 fps, support for both DCI and UHD 4K video recording, and reliable autofocus performance. This camera also features the same beloved Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH. wide-angle prime lens, which has been matched to the sensor design for exceptional resolution and clarity.

The Q2 Monochrom also retains the cherished sleek and compact design that makes it ideal for street and travel shooting, and this Monochrom version even sports a more inconspicuous matte black finish without the Leica red dot. Its magnesium alloy body is weather-sealed for working in trying environments and it uses the same battery featured in the flagship SL-series of mirrorless cameras for longer battery life. A high-resolution 3.68MP OLED electronic viewfinder is featured for fluid and clear eye-level monitoring and a rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD also affords straightforward playback and settings control. Built-in Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi permit wireless sharing and remote camera control from a linked mobile device via the Leica FOTOS app.

Monochrom
Distinguishing itself from the standard Q2, the Q2 Monochrom is the first black-and-white-only model of this compact full-frame camera. Based on the standard edition, this distinct version features the coveted design elements of the Q2 system but adds a 47.3MP monochrome without a color filter array or low-pass filter, in order to record only black-and-white imagery with greater sharpness and detail. Beyond the unique imaging characteristics and image quality, the Q2 Monochrom also features a monochromatic exterior design, with white and gray engravings on the body and a clean top plate appearance.
47.3MP B&W Full-Frame CMOS Sensor and Maestro II Processor
Featuring a truly unique imaging system, the Q2 Monochrom incorporates a high-resolution 47.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor, which pairs with the Maestro II image processor to deliver a wide dynamic range with notable tonal rendering, as well as enhanced sensitivity to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions. The sensor's design features an updated microlens array and omits an optical low-pass filter in order to achieve greater sharpness, resolution, and clarity. Additionally, differentiating itself from typical sensor designs, the Q2 Monochrom sensor omits a color filter array (CFA), which offers the ability to solely record monochromatic imagery using only luminance values for enhanced clarity, depth, and resolution. By removing the CFA, this camera also achieves a higher sensitivity range of ISO 100-100,000 than the color-enabled Q2 camera, along with reduced noise to suit working in difficult lighting conditions and a broad 13-stop dynamic range.

The Maestro II's processing capabilities also afford fast shooting performance, up to 10 fps at full-resolution with a mechanical shutter, along with an especially quick autofocus system. Stills can be recorded as 14-bit DNG files and JPEGs. The added resolution also enables unique digital zoom capabilities to simulate working with different focal length lenses: 30MP images can be created using a 35mm field of view, 15MP images with a 50mm field of view, and 7MP with a 75mm field of view.

In addition to stills, and unique among Monochrom cameras, this Q2 supports both DCI 4K24p and UHD 4K30p video recording, along with high-speed Full HD recording at up to 120p.
Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH. Lens
Key to the popularity of the Q-series is the incorporation of a fixed Summilux 28mm f/1.7 wide-angle prime lens. Blending Leica's optical know-how with a design perfectly matched to the image sensor, this lens incorporates three aspherical elements to control distortion and spherical aberrations for sharp and accurate rendering. Its fast f/1.7 maximum aperture also excels in low-light conditions and offers improved control over depth of field. Extending its versatility, a dedicated macro focusing position can also be used for working with subjects as close as 6.7" away. Additionally, optical image stabilization helps to compensate for the effects of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting.
Body Design
  • High-resolution 3.68MP (1280 x 960) OLED electronic viewfinder provides a clear and realistic means for eye-level viewing. Its high refresh rate virtually eliminates lag and an updated eye sensor provides faster automatic switching between the EVF and the rear LCD.
  • Rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot LCD features a touchscreen design for intuitive navigation and playback, as well as the ability to touch to focus.
  • Lightweight magnesium alloy body is dust and moisture sealed (IP52-rated) for use in harsh environmental conditions.
  • BP-SCL4 battery offers approximately 350 shots per charge and the battery's physical design incorporates a rubber gasket to further reinforce the overall weather sealing.
  • Enhanced haptics, following suit of the M10 and CL-series cameras, emphasize a simpler interface, including a single-stage On/Off button, a three-button rear control set, a programmable button within the thumb-wheel dial, a push-button diopter adjustment, and a distinctive thumb grip.
  • Mechanical shutter affords flash sync speeds up to 1/500 sec.
  • Lens features a 49mm filter thread diameter for attaching optional filters.
  • Accepts one SD-type memory card and supports the UHS II protocol.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi, when used in conjunction with the Leica FOTOS app for iOS and Android, permits sharing imagery directly to a linked mobile device and also enables remote control over the camera and remote shooting via a live view image. Additionally, Bluetooth LE helps to maintain a permanent connection between the mobile device and the camera, enabling remote waking of the camera and automatic connection anytime within range.

Leica Q2 Monochrom Reviews

Unexpectedly Perfect Choice

I have been a dedicated Nikon user since 2008 and for years was sure the D850 would be my next camera but that all changed when I came across the Leica Q2. Despite the Q2 being a very different, and in most respects far more limiting camera, altogether I found myself irresistibly drawn to the Q2 over the D850 and am glad I made the switch. The quality and craftsmanship of the Q2 is truly unparalleled and well worth the high price. The sharpness and clarity of images produced by this camera are the best I've ever experienced, absolutely no distortion or aberrations, with outstanding dynamic range. Couldn't be happier I chose to go with the monochrom version. I don't miss shooting in color and like many who chose the monochrom have found my creativity is now more profoundly expressed. The compact size, light weight & ergonomic appeal were of particular interest when choosing the Q2 over a Nikon DSLR. It's so easy to take anywhere, especially over long distances/periods & draws very little attention. The Q2 is also super easy to operate & utilizes one of the simplest/efficient control layouts. The only drawbacks to the Q2 from my perspective: It's limited to accepting one SD card and has pretty short battery life.

A perfect camera

I recently purchased a beautiful used copy of this camera, and I couldn't be more impressed with it. While I work primarily as a photo editor and educator these days, I still work on my own documentary projects when I have time. The Q2M will be perfect for my work: it is discreet and quiet, the image quality is bar none the most impressive I've ever seen, its manual focus feels fluid, and it's low light capabilities absolutely blow my mind. The macro mode is also incredibly useful for detail photographs. This camera makes you want to constantly go out and make pictures. I'm a believer.

Absolutely the best there is.. Nothing Comes close. "Perfection" Perfection !

I was born and raised in a dark room. This brings me back to possessing 4X5 sheet film. The images from this camera are noting but outstanding. This is the best piece of photographic equipment I have ever owned. Amazing ! In every way. Worth every penny .

I have always been a Leica user for many years, started with the M8, M9, Monochrom, now the Q2, this is simply an amazing camera, plus with my aging eyes, autofocus helps in so many ways, the high iso is the best of any camera, even the Sony IMO. The 28 mm with crop factors work excellent, esp for 35 & 5! The tonality and draw if the lens esp at 1.7 work for almost every situation! Buy it you wont be disappointed

My favorite camera, by a lot

The Q2M is the first camera I've ever used where after weeks of use I don't feel the itch for something more. As you've likely read from other reviews, the Q2M is incredibly fun to use, and all my shooting has improved as I am much more focussed on the essentials; light and composition. If you can stomach the steep upfront cost, and you want the best B&W camera to bring with you everywhere, I can't recommend the Q2M highly enough.

Most significant camera ever!

I've had this camera for just a few weeks now and believe that I have produced some of my best work in years. It is a game changer for me. Seeing in black and white has brought me back to my roots in photography and this camera is like no other. The images are just flat out better that converting from color files on my Nikon Z7. The lens is unbelievably sharp and the fast lens at 28mm produces a very short depth of field even at 28mm with no distortion. The camera is very simple to use and it's a please to hold and look at. I love it!

What a fantastic camera...

After years of shooting film professionaly on 4x5, 2 1/4, 35 mm, working in both B/W and color labs through college and after, I have finally found a digital camera that stands up to the medium. I own older digilux and V Lux cameras, but this is another animal altogether. The Q2M is the ultimate 'street photographer' camera. It's just a dream to walk around with and capture the moments, be it a friends party, a cityscape, a wedding, an interesting landscape, an old building... and on. The lens is exquisote and has a bokeh like none other. F1.8 turns photographs into paintings. The camera size is perfect. Big enough that all the controls are right there, small enough to be unobtrusive and concealed. The image quality is breathtaking. Even at larger print sizes, the clarity is holographic. I also highly recommend the handgrip, thumbgrip, and finger loop. Worth every penny and really adds a level of safety and control when handling the camera. If you want to shoot B/W, this is the way to go. Can't wait for the Q3... I have a feeling it will be breathtaking as well...

Wow!

Wow! What more can I say. The images are amazing. I'm more of a 50mm photographer so I'm learning the love the 28mm lens as much as I love the camera itself! It goes with me everywhere! I was hestitant to spend that much money but I have no regrets having used the Q2M for a couple weeks.

There's a small button on the camera-back, below the shutter speed dial. By default is selects various cropping sizes. It can be customizable though. Can you set this button to be a back-focus button, instead of pressing halfway on the shutter button on the camera's top?
Asked by: Kurt
According to page 149 of the Leica Q2 Monochrom Digital Camera's instruction manual, the Zoom/Lock button on the back of the camera may be programmed for use as Digital Zoom or as Metering Memory Lock (AEL/AFL, AEL, AFL). Page 47 states how to adjust the settings. It states the factory setting is Digital Zoom, but you may alternatively assign automatic exposure metering and/or metering memory lock to the Zoom/Lock button. It states select [Customize Control] in the main menu, select [Zoom/Lock button] in the submenu, then select [Digital Zoom], [AEL/AFL], [AEL], or [AFL]. To access the assigned menu function, press the Zoom/Lock button briefly.

The Leica Q2 Monochrom Digital Camera can shoot 4k video. So, that alone will be better than the Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) for video. The Q2 has way more resolution and can shoot much better in low light.
