Forget about clipping, forget about gain, and forget about hassle; just power on the Zoom F2 ultracompact portable field recorder and press record to capture clear, distortion-free dialog in an instant for your next video shoot, podcast, vlog, or interview. Plus, the F2-BT model is available to empower users with app-based control and wireless timecode synchronization in addition to everything the F2 has to offer.

Thanks to its 32-bit float technology, the F2 handles the softest and loudest sounds you can throw at it while avoiding distortion, maintaining low-noise performance, and freeing you from the responsibility of adjusting gain. Recordings ruined by clipped converters and poorly set preamps are things of the past. You don't even have to worry about unintentionally interrupting the F2 because a simple flick of the Hold switch will keep it recording no matter what button you press.

Whereas other F-Series recorders such as the F4, F6, and F8n are centered around an audio bag–ready form factor for location sound recordists, the F2 is tailored for belt-mount and pocket-friendly placement directly on the subject. Even the included lavalier microphone, with its low-profile design and locking connector, is optimized for reliable and visually discreet operation that won't distract the wearer or the videographer. With a headphone output and onboard transport controls, the F2 also allows actors to listen back to recordings to critique their own performances.

From the refreshingly simple one-touch controls to the long battery life and multiple powering options, the F2 is properly equipped to serve you, regardless of your audio background. Whether you need long-duration recording for a podcast, professional audio capture for an interview, a rock-solid system for weddings, or a space-saving setup for vlogs, the F2 is ready to capture your crucial audio at any location.

Plus, its operational simplicity ensures that the F2 will never get in the way of your workflow, be it simple, complex, or always changing. You can feel confident using it as your main recorder or as a backup unit for added safety. After the shoot, transfer your files to a computer via USB, then use the supplied Steinberg WaveLab Cast software to edit, enhance, mix, and export your audio for the world to hear.

Low-Profile Lapel Mic with Locking Connector
Attach the included lavalier microphone to your subject with the supplied mic clip, then connect its 3.5mm plug–equipped cable to the input of the F2; the locking connection inhibits unintended disconnects. The microphone's omnidirectional polar pattern delivers consistent audio pickup from all directions, yielding dependable voice capture even as the subject turns their head or the microphone changes position. Also, three windscreens are supplied for easy reduction of light wind noise.
Automatic Distortion-Free Audio
The F2 utilizes 32-bit float recording technology to capture intensely loud signals without overloading the A/D converters and bring in extremely quiet sounds without overwhelming noise, all without requiring any gain adjustment from you. Record with confidence knowing that you can just connect the microphone and start recording to attain crisp, clear dialog.
High-Quality Recording Settings
The F2 boasts two high-quality recording resolutions to choose from—32-bit / 44.1 kHz or 32-bit / 48 kHz, both in mono uncompressed BWF (Broadcast Wave File) format. No data compression means that no quality is lost in the creation of the audio files. Use the onboard 80 Hz low-cut filter to reduce rumble and bass buildup in your recordings.
Record Direct to microSD Cards
Maximize portability by recording directly to a microSD/microSDHC/microSDXC card (available separately) for up to 512GB of storage space.
Mic Input with Plug-In Power
The F2 can accommodate mic-level signals via its locking 3.5mm mini-jack input. Since it supplies 2.5V plug-in power, you're free to use common condenser mics such as lavaliers, headsets, and earsets.
Headphone/Line Output with Volume Control
A locking 3.5mm stereo output jack with dedicated volume up/down buttons enables straightforward routing to your camera, DSLR, secondary recorder, or even headphones for easy monitoring.
Power for Hours
To keep up with the pace of on-location production, the F2 can be powered via two AAA alkaline, Lithium, or NiMH rechargeable batteries, a Zoom AD-17 power adapter (available separately), or a USB Type-C battery pack (available separately). With up to 15 hours of run time on AAA batteries, all-day shoots are no problem for the F2.
USB File Transfers and Settings Editor
The F2 Editor lets you adjust settings, format SD cards, and more from your Mac or Windows computer. Since the F2 has a USB Type-C port, simply connect it to your computer via a USB cable (available separately) and launch the editor. The USB connection also makes it easy to transfer files to your computer.
Intuitive Controls and LED Indication
Intuitive one-touch buttons—record, play, stop, and volume up/down— provide fast, hassle-free operations with no menus to wade through. LEDs are provided for clear indication of audio level, battery status, and power.
Hold Function Inhibits Accidental Interruptions
Flip the power switch down to the Hold position to engage the Hold function, which prevents interruptions to the recording caused by accidental button presses.
Accurate Clocking
The F2 is equipped with a high-precision internal clock (±3ppm) to avoid audio and video syncing issues.
Low Profile and Lightweight
With its minimalist profile, the lightweight F2 attaches neatly on belts and waistbands, or can be slipped into a pocket so the recorder can be easily concealed.
Free Editing Software
The Zoom F2 includes a free download license for Steinberg’s WaveLab Cast software, which helps you finalize your project with an array of comprehensive editing, mixing, and refinement tools.

  • Podcasting: WaveLab Cast connects you directly with podcast directories, such as Spreaker or Podbean. You can upload episodes quickly, plus directly create and publish RSS feeds.
  • Audio for Video: Import your video file and WaveLab Cast will automatically extract the audio. You can use the editing tools to lower unwanted noise, change levels, and remove loud sibilants. Metering options allow you to build new tracks, fade-in your music, and use EQ and compression. Re-attach the audio to the video file using WaveLab Cast’s export functions.
  • Field Recording: WaveLab Cast supports up to 96 kHz audio quality and includes a high-end re-sampler. RestoreRig removes noise and unwanted sounds. You can assemble new files using the snap functions and crossfade options. Once you’re done, export your sound files in any popular audio format.

Zoom F2 Reviews

I think this is the best value for 32bit audio recording. the size is tiny. easy to use. no complain at all.

They fixed it!

I bought this recorder a month ago despite the reviews after hearing some issues have been addressed. I have used it multiple times with no errors. They have fixed the issue with the connection of a microphone, it does not create a popping sound. And I guarantee you that every single person that has been experiencing the non-recording issue did not read the manual on how to properly format the device, which is done via Zoom's app on a computer. The audio quality out of it is top notch. 32-bit float audio is incredible. The F2 is 100% a set-it-and-forget-it audio recorder. Having to format through a computer is kind of annoying, but having the strength of 32-bit audio for lav mics at this price is an insanely good deal. This has become an essential piece of equipment in my bag and I recommend it to everyone.

Set it and forget it. No gain settings, just 32 bit float goodness. I personally upgraded the mic, but the mic it comes with is fine too. Haven' had any issues that others claim. Great device.

Too many issues

I've used DR-10's for years, and was excited to upgrade to this Zoom F2 for weddings. Well, I'm back using my DR-10's. On multiple occasions I was recording a first look only to discover there was no file that night while dumping footage. I'm the kind of guy who's so paranoid about recording I constantly pull the recorder back out of the groom's pocket to triple-check that it's running. There's something off about this F2, maybe as simple as the LED incorrectly indicating that it's recording when it's actually not. I've also had poor battery life issues, despite using the computer to confirm the correct battery setting. I had it die in the middle of a catholic ceremony for me once with fresh batteries put in the night before (it did successfully close the file giving me 40 minutes of a clip at least). Zoom definitely should've added an LCD to this guy, both as a better confirmation of recording status and to be able to update settings on the fly. If you have Tascam DR-10's I'd just stick with them.

So far so Good

I've had one thing I've shot with these so far but, so far I really like them. They are smaller than I expected but I prefer that anyways. Out of the box they are good to go you don't have to do anything. just add a battery and a memory card and start recording. One downside that I just failed to think about was not having access to anything unless its connected to a computer. If it's failing to record while your on a shoot you need a computer to format the card.

Great for now

Sure the build quality could be better. But for $200 a 32bit float recorder it's hard to complain. With rechargeable AAA batteries it won't cost too much to power this thing. Also nice that you can power it via usbc. Helpful that they got around the patent which allows you to monitor audio while recording. Sure, I would have liked to be able to monitor wirelessly, but hopefully that will come soon. If these break soon, I'll probably just keep getting more of them until there's the next generation either from zoom or tentacle sync. Tip: In order to open the battery door easily, just lightly press down in the middle of the battery compartment (where it says f2) and it should come off easily. Don't try to pull it off from the sides.

I bought 5 Zoom f2's this with a better lav mics like the Deity W Lav Pro gives me a great sound for the price. I was on the fence about the BT version but not having a way to monitor the sound was a no go for the price difference. I believe that this gives a better sounding option than a wireless system. The Rode wireless go II is nice and you can record onto the transmitter and monitor the sound at the same time. But after listening to both the sound of the zoom was the winner for me. I was never going to use the mic that came with the zoom F2 from the start. I needed a great sounding lav mic to get the sound that's usable for my work. The setup is a boom shotgun outside, a boom hypercardioid indoors and a lav mics on everyone in the shot. The audio in the camera is for scratch only. The downside to the zoom f2 is I can't monitor it as I record but the boom mic is always monitored to assure good sound is there for the editing. After hiding the lav I have the person move around to make sure that the clothing isn't making a sound on the mic itself by monitoring the zoom before concealment on the person, and tell the if you feel a change in the mic position to let use know and we will reattach it. Pros. 32 bit Ease of use Small size No wireless drop off. Cons. No way of monitoring unless you connect it to a wireless system the mic that comes with it could be better. The mic that comes with the zoom will work fine for most people.

Can I plug this into an Amp or the line out of a speaker? Would that be too much voltage?
Asked by: Hoke
You can send the output from the F2 to the line input of an amp or powered speaker. The input on the F2 is intended for use with a microphone and not a line level signal from an amplifier or speaker. In order to connect a line level signal to the mic input on the F2, you would need to use a line-to-mic level attenuator and possibly other adapters to provide compatibility.

Is there a good waterproof microphone and a good ...

Is there a good waterproof microphone and a good waterproof bag that the needed wire could feed through? I need this for onwater recording (mainly canoe, possibly windsurfing)
Asked by: Jamie
There are several options for waterproof and water-resistant microphones that we typically have available in stock and others that are available by special order. The Point Source Audio Series8 CO-8WL Omnidirectional Waterproof Lavalier Microphone - Beige (B&H# POCO8WLXSEBE) is a true IP57 rated waterproof mic that would be a good option. The Countryman B3 Omni Lavalier Mic, Standard Sens, with 3.5mm Locking Connector for Sennheiser Wireless Transmitters - Black (B&H# COB3W4BSR) is a good option for a water-resistant mic that's IP67 rated and can be used for water sports as well as reporting during a hurricane. Countryman's EMW Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone with Flat Frequency Response for Sennheiser Transmitters - Black (B&H# COMEMWFBSR) is also IP67 rated. The Voice Technologies VT500WATER Waterproof Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone with 3.5mm Locking Mini Connector, Black - (B&H# VOVT0155) is IPX7 rated and is available by special order. We also have a Deity Microphones W.Lav Pro DA35 Bundle Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone with Microdot to Locking 3.5mm Adapter - Beige (B&H# DEWLAVPROD35) in stock which is IP57 waterproof rated, but it uses an adapter that sticks out and adds additional width. You may be able to use a small waterproof neoprene Zing Designs Camera Pouch (B&H# ZICPSB) which has an internal bag with a corded pull closure and additional flap that secures with a hook-and-loop fastener. The pouch has a belt loop and the pull closure cord also functions as a neck strap to provide different options to secure it. You should be able to feed the mic cable through the top of the pouch and under the flap. Dimensions of the F2 are 2.3 x 1.8 x 0.9" and the small Zing pouch is 3.75 x 2.75 x 1.5". This should provide sufficient protection from splashes though I would not recommend allowing it to become fully submerged. Please contact us by phone or through live chat on the website if you would like further assistance.
