Sigma 24mm f/3.5 DG DN Contemporary Overview

By B&H Photo's

An ultra-wide prime with an emphasis on portability, the 24mm f/3.5 DG DN Contemporary Lens, from Sigma, is a versatile and highly compact lens well-suited to a variety of shooting tasks. Its sleek profile makes it ideal for walkaround shooting, especially for hiking or travel landscapes, as well as street and reportage applications. Distinguishing itself from other wides, too, it features a 1:2 maximum magnification ratio and 4.25" minimum focusing distance for working with close-up subjects. Its optical design features both aspherical and low dispersion glass elements, which suppress a variety of aberrations and distortions for well-controlled and accurate rendering. Also, a Super Multi-Layer Coating helps to reduce ghosting and flare for improved color fidelity and contrast.

In regard to focusing, this lens uses a stepping motor for quick and quiet AF performance that suits both photo and video applications. As an I Series lens, too, this lens features a manual aperture ring and all-metal barrel constriction for enhanced tactility. Additionally, there is a rounded seven-blade diaphragm for smooth bokeh quality and the lens housing is also weather-sealed to suit working in inclement conditions.

As part of the Contemporary line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve a balance between convenience and performance, and meshes a compact, lightweight build and versatile handling with notable optical attributes.
I Series lens emphasizes a sleek and stylish physical design that is built to the same operational standards of Sigma's Cine lenses, including a mechanical aperture ring, knurled metal components, and various switches and tactile controls for intuitive operation.
Ultra-wide-angle 24mm lens is designed for full-frame L-Mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 36mm equivalent focal length.
Modest f/3.5 maximum aperture helps to maintain an especially compact and lightweight physical profile.
One Special Low Dispersion (SLD) element markedly reduces chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Three aspherical elements help to control distortion and spherical aberrations for a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Maximum magnification of 1:2 pairs with a 4.25" minimum focusing distance for unique close-up shooting capabilities.
Integrated stepping motor realizes smooth and quiet autofocus, which is further complemented by an internal focusing design to promote greater responsiveness.
Manual aperture ring includes an 'A' position for camera-based aperture selection.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
Brass bayonet affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity and rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount's design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.
Included LCF55-01M magnetic lens cap attaches directly to the front of the lens and is compatible with the optional CH-11 Lens Cap Holder.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma UD-11 USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

The lens reminds me of my old lens from the 90s. Not heavy but sturdy feeling.

Exceptional value

This lens is sharp, edge to edge, flare resistant and focuses close. Mechanically it is solid from the lens hood, to the magnetic lens cap. Very nice aperture ring and the focus mechanism. This lens reminds me of Leica lenses of old. I'm very happy with my purchase. Sigma is producing amazing lenses.

Excellent and better than expected.

Historically I have not been a fan of Sigma lenses simply due to the exterior finish on them, some parts of which tend to get burnish marks on them very easily. This lens is all metal, the quality and feel is top notch. Normally I prefer the Sony lenses but this Sigma lens feels and looks better to me than the similar Sony FE24mm f/2.8 G which I also tried. I also prefer the bokeh of this lens, the quality of which has been mentioned in several reviews I've read and they seem to have been correct. The lens is certainly very sharp and I appreciate its small size for ease of carrying. I use it in a Sony a7R IV and have a custom button set so I can switch back and forth between full frame and APS-C easily which in a sense gives me a 24 and 35mm lens although at a loss of resolution, still over 25 Megapixels though. Obviously you could crop later but it helps with composition. I hope Sigma moves more in this direction in terms of build quality with future lenses.

What I was looking for.

I bought the Sigma fp thinking it would be great walk around camera with a small wide angle lens. It gook 9 months for then to come out with it but it is here now. It makes great pictures, sharp with great colors. It's not quite as small as I'd like, not a pancake, but small enough. It has a great feel to with with an all metal body, nice clicks on all the stops and easy focusing if one decides to use manual focus. I'm very happy to take the small 3.5 over a larger, bulkier 1.4. My only complaint is that it would be nice to have a button to take the lens out of auto aperture settings. It has slipped to a manual setting a few times with out being aware until I can't change the aperture from the camera. Otherwise, it's really a joy to have and to use.

Super Compact, High Build Quality

Bought this lens because I wanted a wide angle that was super compact. The build quality is exceptional, very happy to have an aperture ring, and the image quality is great for the size. I don't mind the slower aperture because this will be a landscape hiking and daytime street lens, which means I will be shooting at the slower apertures anyways.

Great on a gimbal.

I've been getting excellent results using this and a sigma fp on a gimbal. I'd buy it again.

Looking from the top and behind the camera, is the lens infinity focus on the far right, on the left or can it be programed in the camera as to which direction focus happens?
Asked by: Pavel
Rotating the focus clockwise brings it towards infinity and counter clockwise would be minimum focus. This cannot be changed.

Would this lens be a worthwhile addition for a Sony a6600, given that I already have the Sony 16-55 G Lens? The small size is very appealing, but image quality is my primary consideration.
Asked by: Harvey
This lens would be worthwhile if you're using the A6600 specifically for video and need a compact wide angle lens for use with a follow focus or on a gimbal. Otherwise for still applications, the E 16-55mm f/2.8 covers the 24mm focal length already.
