Blackmagic Design Micro Converter Reviews

Passes Sony record flag to EVF

Great small box and unlike many earlier HDMI-SDI converters that I tested, it passes the metadata for Recording in Progress and timecode to the SDI output. I use this in with a Sony A7ii in a shoulder rig with the Zacuto Gratical Eye EVF. (The Zacuto Eye has only SDI input). Because this feature was added to this latest generation Blackmagic converter, I can monitor the Record light in the EVF and the talent can see the red LED record light on the front of the camera. This helps avoid the dreaded "oops missed the shot and recorded half an hour of the camera pointed at the floor" syndrome. A double check is to also watch timecode advancing in the viewfinder. Power for the box comes from a USB tap on my battery -- it seems to draw very little power / don't notice any decrease in battery life while using. I know my rig may be different from what others are using but at least in this case it is a terrific solution.

I use this to down sample my Blackmagic Ursa Mini 4.6K's signal to my Blackmagic ATEM Mini Extreme ISO and then also have it carry loop-back signal back to the camera to get tally light, preview, and timecode back onto the camera. It's as seamless can be and works great! Plus, you can load custom LUTs right on it.

As soon as the usb power got connected and the light turned on, signal showed up on our 4k mini recorder card receiving the HDSDI output. Works like a charm!

It's great for a bidirectional converter. Used on tons of shows, indoor and outdoor and have had good luck with these.

Not overly impressed with the fit and finish, and it seems a bit pricey for such a basic function. Does not come with a 5v power supply. The input connectivity LED indicator is on the wrong side of the unit, making it awkward to troubleshoot connection issues. Meh.

This converter does not scale your video and it can not handle 4K or UHD video signals. You will need to send in 2K DCI if you want to get 2K DCI out of it.

Hello what happen if I input 12G SDI signal from a camera such as Red V Raptor 8k, will this downscale the signal to 3G SDI output or it will not recognize the signal(12G)? Thanks!
Asked by: Julius
This product will work as long as you are sending a resolution/Frame Rate that it can accept. If your camera sends out at DCI 2K or lower resolution at 60p or slower then it will process the signal. if you attempt to send something higher resolution or frame rate (4K etc) then the converter will not recognize the signal.

The original URSA (not Mini or Mini Pro models) camera does not support camera control from ATEM switchers. Adding this converter will not add support for this feature.
