Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Overview

By B&H Photo's

Expand your creative range and versatility with the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens + Speedlite EL-100 Creative Photography Kit, which bundles the sleek normal-length prime lens with the compact and capable on-camera flash.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens

One of the most versatile focal lengths available, the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens from Canon is a compact, normal-length prime well-suited to everyday shooting. The bright f/1.8 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also affords increased control over depth of field for isolating subject matter. Individual elements feature a Super Spectra coating to help minimize flare and ghosting to realize greater contrast and color accuracy when working in backlit and harsh conditions. Additionally, an STM stepping AF motor is used to realize quick and near-silent autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override.

Normal-length prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides an 80mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture enables control over depth of field for selective focus applications and also benefits working in low-light situations.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An STM stepping AF motor realizes smooth, near-silent autofocus that is complemented by advanced AF algorithms and a high-speed CPU for fast AF performance. Additionally, full-time manual focus override is also available.
Redeveloped physical design incorporates a metal lens mount for durability as well as a re-located focusing ring to maintain a compact form factor.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Canon Speedlite EL-100

Simple and compact, the Speedlite EL-100 from Canon is a sleek strobe designed to give you more control, flexibility, and power than your camera's built-in flash. Offering a guide number of 85.3' at ISO 100 and 50mm, this flash also has a 90° tilting range, 330° rotating, and a similar spread to that of a 24mm to suit working in a variety of indoor and outdoor situations. The mode dial on the rear allows for easy group selection or it can also be set to AUTO to allow your camera to determine when flash is necessary. Also, for off-camera use, an optical receiver allows for triggering from up to 36' away. For creative applications, a stroboscopic mode can be used for unique effects during long exposures or second-curtain sync helps to emphasize moving subjects.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Reviews

An upgrade of multiple dividends!

My older Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens was given to a friend who took up photography in retirement. She was delighted. I purchased this stm lens for use with my Canon 5D Mark III, and I was not disappointed! Five stars for sharpness and bokeh. I shoot primarily in aperture-priority mode. At f/3.2 and f/3.5, I get beautiful results. This lens is a winner!

This lens is incredible!! It paid for itself on it's first shoot. Great detail, great bokeh, great lens!! In auto and manual focus, just an overall smooth lens that works very well! I'm super impressed with it.

My yearbook students put these on and at first were jolted by the prime lens and it's lack of zoom. But then they saw the effect of the shallow depth of field on portraits, and were hooked! Good service and tracking throughout the order process.

This lens works really well, it's a little stiff putting it in my camera but other than that it's fine.

I use this lens on a cropped sensor in the T7i, and it is like a 100mm in my opinion. I am not sure how it will look like on a super 35 sensor.
