Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Overview

By B&H Photo's

Spanning a versatile zoom range and characterized by its bright design, the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is a 25.5-105mm-equivalent lens for APS-C-format Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. The wide to short-tele range is ideal for everyday shooting and the fast f/2.8 constant maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and offers improved control over depth of field. Complementing this design is a series of specialized optics, including aspherical and low dispersion elements, that produce well-corrected imagery with high sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy. Individual elements also feature Tamron's BBAR coating, which suppresses flare and ghosting for greater contrast when working in backlit and harsh lighting conditions.

Adding to the versatility of the zoom design is a Vibration Compensation image stabilization system, which reduces the appearance of camera shake for steadier photo and video recording in low-light conditions. Also benefitting handling, an RXD stepping motor enables quick, near-silent autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override and a minimum focusing distance of 7.5". Suiting this lens's use in inclement weather conditions, it also features a moisture-resistant construction along with a fluorine-coated front element to protect against fingerprints and smudging.

Versatile zoom is designed for APS-C-format Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras and covers wide-angle to short-telephoto fields of view with its 25.5-105mm equivalent focal length range.
Bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent brightness throughout the zoom range and offers improved control over depth of field.
Two molded glass aspherical elements and one hybrid aspherical element help to correct distortion and spherical aberrations to achieve a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering.
Two LD (Low Dispersion) elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to realize improved clarity and color accuracy.
BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating has been applied to individual elements in order to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting to achieve greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) autofocus motor delivers impressively quiet, quick, and smooth focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications. This focusing system also offers a minimum focusing distance of just 7.5" and a 1:4.8 maximum magnification for working with close-up subjects. Full-time manual focus override is also possible, and it is compatible with Sony's Direct Manual Focus function or fine-tuned manual control.
VC image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for more effective handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions.
A moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Reviews

Nice lens!

Replace my Sony 18-135 kit lens with this one. I will probably miss the longer range some, but the wide 2.8 aperture throughout this baby is really what I needed. Did about a hundred indoor shots this weekend and was able to get shots I know I couldn't (without excessive noise) with my previous lens. Also took a few outside and the background blur was great!.

Just OK

Bought this for night photography. I owned Tamron 18-300mm and just so happy with the results. So bought the 17-70mm F/2.8 hoping to get another WOW effect. I also have Fuji 16-55mm F2.8 but it's to heavy and want something light a fast. The results with the Tamron 17-70mm is mix. @ 17mm the picture is bright and sharp. When I start using the 50-70mm I found the edges are flared compared to the 17mm. As a hobbyist and nobody to impress. The lens is good and lighter. My Fuji 16-55mm f2.8 is better but heavier.

The 17-70 exceeded my expectations. I am using it on a Sony FX30. Sony's legendary autofocus works perfectly and silently. The FX30 has digital Clear Zoom which leverages it's 6K sensor, and that adds reach to the long end exceeding anything I need on an everyday basis. The lens is big-ish, but not heavy. It feels very solid and well crafted. The zoom action feels smooth and consistent. I look forward to pairing this with the Tamron 11-20 f2.8.

Coming from Canon and shooting a lot of weddings, my favorite was the 24-70mm. This lens was even better for my first wedding shoot with the extended range it gives. Focusing was fast and images are sharp. Great lens!

Love the f2.8, love its handling. Don't like the size and weight, but that's the price paid for quality.

I love this lens!

I bought this after using a similar Tamron on my sister's full frame. I am not a pro by any means, but I really enjoy the quality of this lens. It's perfect for traveling and the images come out beautiful!

Wow!

Everything I asked for. Sharp across the frame at all apertures and focal lengths. VC works very well, much less jumping around the frame than just IBIS on its own. Focusing took some adjustment of internal settings but once locked down its super stable. This lens might as well glue itself to my X-T4.

Is this internal zoom or if used on a gimbal will the gimbal need rebalancing when focal length is changed?
Asked by: Theodore
For zoom lenses zoom to the middle focal length which would be around 40mm and calibrate your gimbal to that weight balance then you have the flexibility of zooming whiteout having to recalibrate it all. But obviously if you're going to zoom down all the way to 17mm or up to 70mm then its going to depend on how strong your gimbal motors is.

Will this lens work on fs5? Is it parfocal?
Asked by: zbb
This is an APS-C format E-mount lens meant for Sony cameras, and should mount without issue on an FS5. Based on the FS5 sensor size (23.6 x 13.3mm), it should also more than adequately cover the Super35 sensor. Unfortunately, it is not parfocal.

Will this lens work on an IR covered camera without hot spots?
Asked by: Tom
There are many variables. Technically the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Lens for Sony E should work fine on a camera that has been converted to IR. The IR conversion can cause issues and some lenses might not work as well. And the specific shot can be an issue.
