Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Overview

By B&H Photo's

Spanning a versatile zoom range and characterized by its bright design, the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is a 25.5-105mm-equivalent lens for APS-C-format Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. The wide to short-tele range is ideal for everyday shooting and the fast f/2.8 constant maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and offers improved control over depth of field. Complementing this design is a series of specialized optics, including aspherical and low dispersion elements, that produce well-corrected imagery with high sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy. Individual elements also feature Tamron's BBAR coating, which suppresses flare and ghosting for greater contrast when working in backlit and harsh lighting conditions.

Adding to the versatility of the zoom design is a Vibration Compensation image stabilization system, which reduces the appearance of camera shake for steadier photo and video recording in low-light conditions. Also benefitting handling, an RXD stepping motor enables quick, near-silent autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override and a minimum focusing distance of 7.5". Suiting this lens's use in inclement weather conditions, it also features a moisture-resistant construction along with a fluorine-coated front element to protect against fingerprints and smudging.

Versatile zoom is designed for APS-C-format Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras and covers wide-angle to short-telephoto fields of view with its 25.5-105mm equivalent focal length range.
Bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent brightness throughout the zoom range and offers improved control over depth of field.
Two molded glass aspherical elements and one hybrid aspherical element help to correct distortion and spherical aberrations to achieve a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering.
Two LD (Low Dispersion) elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to realize improved clarity and color accuracy.
BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating has been applied to individual elements in order to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting to achieve greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) autofocus motor delivers impressively quiet, quick, and smooth focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications. This focusing system also offers a minimum focusing distance of just 7.5" and a 1:4.8 maximum magnification for working with close-up subjects. Full-time manual focus override is also possible, and it is compatible with Sony's Direct Manual Focus function or fine-tuned manual control.
VC image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for more effective handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions.
A moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Reviews

Great well rounded product

This is the bread and butter focal length for APS-C. And getting a constant f2.8 is really useful. With APS-C sensors you want to keep the ISO low, so speed helps. Furthermore it's harder to get subject isolation with APS-C so speed is key. Focus works as well as any native lens (which is excellent). The lens is sharp throughout, produces good colour and contrast. It close focuses and has OSS - great for a6000, a6100, a6300 and a6400 cameras without sensor shift. It's bigger than its peers is the only negative thing I can say - but this is to be expected as it's either substantially faster (than the 16-70, 18-135) or has OSS (vs. 16-55). I found the image quality to be better than the the Sony 16-70 (though I still like that lens) and quite a bit better than the Sony 18-135. It's a tad behind Sony's most excellent 16-55 (which is a true stunner at every f-stop and focal length). Put another way the Tamron is close to the Sigma trio (giving up f1.4 for zoom convenience and OSS). It's a good compromise at a good price. Highly recommended. Now get out there and shoot!

THIS LENS DESIGN HAS ISSUES!..

First off I love the images this lens can capture, but it has a design flaw. It allows dust in when zooming in and out. This is the second lens and the same problem. After using my lens 1 time out west I got dust inside the lens. Tamron replaced the lens for me, but 6 months later after using the lens in the Smokies 1 time I had the same problem with the replacement lens. When I messaged Tamron about this problem they replied " By zooming in and out creates a vacuum like suction that can trap dust under the front element."....... What!?...... How am I supposed to use this lens then?..... Needless to say I'm sending my lens back to Tamron.. again to get it cleaned or replaced.. This is not what I expected when I purchased this lens. And for the record I also have the Tamron 11-20 and have carried it 300 miles in the backcountry and I've had no problem from it.... So this definitely isn't user error. But needless to say I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS LENS.

This lens exceeded my expectations. It's a very useful focal range for APS-C, and at f/2.8 it's great for most lighting situations. Focus is quick and accurate, including in video. It rarely leaves my a6600.

Love it.

So far the lens has performed beautifully. The autofocus is fast and reliable, The vibration compensation (VC) does help especially with handheld video.

Good all purpose wide angle-medium telephoto lens. Had it for a month and ~500 pics (street, landscape, wildlife). Took a bit to understand the depth of field for the f/2.8 aperture. For me, getting my Sony A6000 auto focus set right (lock on AF) made a big difference. Framing is beginning to be a natural function.

Perfectly fits my Sony a7ii with my Moza air 2. Provides enough zooming and aperture for recordings I am looking for. Quality looks really good.

Spectacular range and good optics!

The range on this lens makes it a great choice for a do-it-all lens that gets wide enough, while also breaking into the near telephoto range at 70mm on APSC. Handling wise, it is bigger than comparable options, but the constant 2.8 aperture and the aforementioned range mean that if those two features speak to you, it is well worth carrying around. Also, it is not as heavy as the size might dictate, and it balances well on a body like the a6X00 line. Overall, I strongly recommend the lens! I was lucky enough to get to try it out at the NYC store pre-purchase which also really helped!

Is this internal zoom or if used on a gimbal will the gimbal need rebalancing when focal length is changed?
Asked by: Theodore
For zoom lenses zoom to the middle focal length which would be around 40mm and calibrate your gimbal to that weight balance then you have the flexibility of zooming whiteout having to recalibrate it all. But obviously if you're going to zoom down all the way to 17mm or up to 70mm then its going to depend on how strong your gimbal motors is.

Will this lens work on fs5? Is it parfocal?
Asked by: zbb
This is an APS-C format E-mount lens meant for Sony cameras, and should mount without issue on an FS5. Based on the FS5 sensor size (23.6 x 13.3mm), it should also more than adequately cover the Super35 sensor. Unfortunately, it is not parfocal.

Is it 17-70 on APS-C and 25.5-105 on full frame (in crop mode)? I don’t understand equivalence when it comes to APSC lens vs full frame ones and the same for bodies.
Asked by: Jack
The physical specifications of the lens are 17-70mm in focal length, however, the angle of view would be equivalent to that of a 25.5-105mm on both APS-C cameras and full-frame cameras in crop-mode. If used on a full-frame camera without crop mode, the lens will vignette.
