Westcott FJ80 Reviews

The FJ80 is a great speedlight.

The FJ80 is a great speedlight. Love the simplicity and touch screen. I was disappointed to learn That the FJ80 is not fully functional with every Nikon camera. The TTL does not work with my D6 but does work with the D850. Although both cameras work perfectly in Manual mode. The main reason I purchased this speedlight was to integrate it with my 3 FJ400 lights and it works perfectly for that. I would easily give this speedlight a 5 star rating if the TTL worked with all Nikon cameras.

Great, until it failed me mid session

I was really happy with this flash's performance. Fast recycling time, great battery life, and Universal compatibility (with the hot-shoe adapter for Sony). I had used it for only about 5 shoots since we mostly use the FJ400 in the studio. It suddenly failed me in a normal, nondemanding session. It displayed an OH error (overheat error), which even after re-booting, re-charging the battery, and waiting various days after use, didn't go away. The flash wasn't even hot to the touch when the error came on. The flash was rendered inoperable. Currently waiting for a replacement, since the device comes with a one-year warranty. Hope this next copy doesn't fail me.

Strobe and simplicity!

I bought this strobe and the FJ800 lighting kit and LOVE it! This is able to be the master or slave and it's just simple to use. The color display screen is simple to understand and just as easy to configure. If you're new to using strobes this is a great place to start and the Westcott system assure simple management of a multitude of products. Very well done. The only downside is that this feels a little chintzy compared to my Canon flashes, but whatever - not a deal breaker. This thing is just so easy to use!

Not even close to worth the money

I have several other Wescott flashes that I love, I have soft boxes and reflectors among other things. So I bought this flash thinking it would be good for events and some outdoor portraits. First of all it feels incredibly cheap, and the head of the flash never stays where you said it. There's just not enough tension to hold the flashlight up. If you put any modifiers on it it becomes useless. Possibly the worst part of this device is the battery. It's great that they have a rechargeable battery, but it doesn't even make it 50 1/2 power flashes. Save your money and buy a different product!

Great speedlight. Perfect companion to FJ200 and FJ400. Universal nature of the flash and remote trigger allows you to use it with any major brand camera (Sonly requires a small adapter). For over a decade I used Nikon speedlights with Pocketwizard triggers but these will be replacing that combination in my business. Lithium Ion battery provides great power.

Decent but feels cheap

I love the other lights by Westcott and I bought this because it works in the eco system but it feels a little cheap for the price tag especially compared to the 200's. It seems to work well and does integrate seamlessly.

Durability? How long have folks been shooting on these and how have they held the rigors of commercial shooting? Thanks!
Asked by: Steve
From testing thus far, the head does seem to be quite durable and well built. In terms of longevity for commercial shooting, it will be able to do 400 full-power flashes on a 2-hour charge so for longer shoots, I would recommend having a power source near by if you are shooting a lot. All in all, it holds up quite well for commercial shooting.
