TTArtisan 50mm f/1.2 Reviews

Great affordable option to a high end look

I have been using this lens now for over a month on my R6 and I absolutely love the look of this lens. Keeping in mind that it is a manual lens you have to have focus peaking on, but man does it do a great job. Paired with a variable ND it has really kept that beautiful Boca in our videos. I highly recommend this lens for anyone who is trying to have an affordable budget option at their fingertips.

A massive bargain!

If you're not put off by the full manual nature of this lens and lack of EXIF data, then you should just go ahead and spend the $100. Build quality is excellent, and the optical performance of my copy is very, very good. In an absolute sense not just for the money. It's sharp in the broad center wide open, gains a bit more contrast and sharpness in the center as you stop down (even just to f1.4-1.7 - the half-stop aperture clicks are lovely, BTW), and the corners come into pretty crisp sharpness as well by f3.5-4, though they never quite reach the center sharpness level. It's true that the odd aperture shape leads to unusual bokeh balls in OOF lights at anything other than wide open, but they aren't terribly distracting, and in images lacking strong highlights in the OOF areas the bokeh remains creamy and smooth. I read somewhere that this was an intentional design to maintain bokeh smoothness as well as ensure 10-pointed sun-stars. There is some lateral CA, but it's pretty mild, bokeh CA is present, but adds character rather than being annoying. The flare characteristics are very gentle and soft in my experience, and have a very vintage cast. All in all the images I get out of the ttartisan 50/1.2 feel very much like a high quality vintage lens, not a cheap modern lens. I think that's a real compliment, and the main reason I'm so satisfied with my purchase. You could probably find an SMC Takumar 50/1.4 in near perfect condition for the same price, but then you'd need an adapter and the overall package would be bulkier, if not, perhaps heavier than the ttartisan lens. But you'll never get an MC Rokkor 58/1.2, Canon FD 50/1.2, Nikkor 50/1.2 AIS, or a Sonnar 50/1.5 for this cheap, and that's the company this lens lives with, with better bokeh than some, better CA control than most of those classics, and also better sharpness and contrast wide open. This lens is an absurd bargain. If it were AF, or even just had aperture data it'd be 5 stars at twice the $$.

Does NOT work with Full Frame photo

The lens feels good and does all the things you'd want. When shooting photos on the Panasonic S5, there's a vignetting caused by the lens. Not recommended for that camera.

The TTArtisan f/1.2 for Fuji X-mount is a pleasure to shoot with. Solid construction, fast f-stop, and sharp focus. What else could you ask for?

Exceeds Expectations

This lens goes way beyond any expectations. I have been slow to adopt third party lenses because of how important a lens is to photography. However, I am totally satisfied with the build quality, feel, and results from this lens. Careful focus is needed at wide open apertures but that works for how I shoot.

Great lens for the price

Pretty heavy due to all metal body. But feels very solid. Focus ring is buttery smooth and aperture ring clicks nicely, letting you know how much you've adjusted it. My only complaint is the screw on metal lens cover. I would have much preferred a standard squeeze on style plastic one. But overall very good for the price

All manual. What's the rush.

This was meant to teach you to compose a photo. I use this for portraits and still life. Not landscapes. Chromatic aberration of course when wide open.

Super sharp at 1.2! Awesome swallow depth of field. Beautiful lens and excellent construction. The only downside is its weight, which is not that bad compared to the the Leica 42.5mm 1.2.

Hi, Does this lens work in a Sony Ar7II? I know it won't cover the full frame, but I wonder how much coverage it would have or how pictures would look. I do not mind some vignetting. Thank you
Asked by: Roberto
The TT Artisans lens will vignette the image on a full frame camera. To avoid vignetting just set the camera to crop mode but that would make the lens into a 75mm equivalent and lower the resolution to about 19mp on the A7RII. As an alternative, there is a 50mm f1.05 lens for full frame cameras: https://bhpho.to/2OxUI1T

So if FL is 50 on an APSC lens, FL is smaller on a full frame. So what is 75mm referencing in the stats?
Asked by: Gregory
The TTArtisan 50mm f/1.2 Lens for Sony E (Black) is physically 50mm in focal length which does not change. When used on an APS-C camera with a 1.5x crop factor, this is the equivalent of 75mm on full frame because of the crop factor.

I just received this with a M4/3 mount. When I put it on my OM-D E-M1 II, I see nothing - looks the same with lens cap off as on. This was listed as compatible for my camera. Tried it at all aperture. My camera did detect that is a MF lens. What more do I need to do Or just return it?
Asked by: Deborah
Thanks for the answer - good to know about the tight fit and tricky connection. However, Ive already returned the lens because of the weight of the lens. Too heavy for a small prime. Along with an Uber touchy connection, it doesnt meet my needs.

The Sigma fp is a full-frame camera but this lens is a L-mount APS-C/Super35 lens. It will fit but you might have to shoot in Super35.
