Impressively Bright, Surprisingly Compact
A classic wide-angle prime with an updated, sleek form factor, the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM is further characterized by its speed and advanced optical design. The versatile focal length suits everything from street shooting to landscape and documentary subjects, and the fast maximum aperture excels in low light and for controlling depth of field.
G Master Optical Design
As part of Sony's esteemed G Master series, this lens is designed to achieve a balance of impressive resolution and sharpness along with distinctive and pleasing bokeh.
  • Two XA (extreme aspherical) elements effectively control astigmatism, field curvature, coma, distortion, and other spherical aberrations for a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering.
  • One extra-low dispersion element reduces chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
  • Nano AR Coating II has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions. This updated coating is better suited for larger, curved elements and is especially adept at minimizing internal reflections.
Wide-Angle Versatility and f/1.4 Speed
  • The 35mm focal length is inherently versatile; perfectly suited for street, landscape, and reportage subjects, it also excels as a creative choice for other applications like fashion and portraiture.
  • Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also helps to control depth of field and produce selective focus effects.
  • Rounded 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Fast and Precise Focusing
Two XD Linear Motors provide quick, quiet, and precise autofocus and subject tracking performance. This design also contributes to more natural, intuitive Linear Response manual focus control and an AF/MF switch is located on the lens barrel for tactile control over this setting.
  • Internal focusing design offers more responsive focusing performance and maintains a consistent overall lens length during operation.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 9.8" suits making dynamic close-up images.
  • Despite its wide-angle field of view, the close minimum focusing distance and bright maximum aperture enable creating shallow depth of field imagery characterized by a strong close-up subject and a soft background.
Durable and Reliable Design
Besides signaling impressive optics, G Master lenses are also characterized by a robust and reliable physical construction that includes weather sealing and protective coatings.
  • Unique among fast wide-angle primes, the 35mm f/1.4 GM is distinguished by its sleek and lightweight form factor, measuring 3 x 3.9" and weighing 1.1 lb.
  • Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
  • Fluorine-coated front element resists dust, moisture, and fingerprints and is easy to clean.
  • A focus hold button is featured on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
  • Physical aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications.

Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM Reviews

Best 35 mm for Sony.

The Sony 35 f/1.4 GM is an excellent lens. It's sharp, fast, and compact. The AF is quiet and quick. It is significantly more expensive than other options in the 35 mm range, but in my opinion, it's worth it if you can make it work for your budget. It's quickly becoming my favorite everyday lens.

Sony FE 35mm f1.4 GM Lens

An absolutely beautiful lens in all respects. That said this is the first Sony product I have owned. To date I shoot Nikon exclusively and don't own or plan to buy a Sony camera body any time soon. I purchased this lens along with a Megadap ETZ21 adapter (separate review). I don't own a Nikon 35mm Z prime lens, so I thought I would experiment a bit to fill this niche with an f1.4 as opposed to buying the Nikon f1.8. My guess is Nikon will eventually make an f1.2 35mm lens, but for now I feel I'm sort of ahead of the game.

Incredible All Use Lens!

This lens is amazing in both sharpness and color rendition. I got both it and the 50mm GM and this one in my opinion is far more versatile. I'm likely going to switch to using this as my photo lens and put my 24-70 GM on my A7SIII for video. On the A1 this is a 35mm F/1.4 lens at 50mp and is very fast to focus and get colors right, straight out the camera JPEGs blow away. When put into APS-C mode you get a 50mm lens with 28mp and you still have the option for clear image zoom and active steady shot in video making this a great all around lens for every day use!

Unbelievable Image Quality and Features

Best 35mm on E mount, and I tried all the big ones. This lens, optically, is as good as any lens really needs to be. It is insanely sharp with very high micro contrast and overall contrast, almost not flaring no matter where light sources are in the frame, colors are neutral, and the high sharpness goes all the way out to the corners. Close focus is also insanely good and way, way better than the Sigma 35 f1.4 DG DN A. The only real issues with the lens optically would be heavy vignette wide open (easily corrected) and focus breathing (which can be corrected by breathing compensation with certain cameras). The lens is also unbelievably light weight and the manual focus is very good for video, like the rest of the GM lenses. I imagine lenses will get better than this one at some point, but what the designers have done here is nothing short of miraculous. Big round of applause.

This lens is well built, compact and balanced when mounted. The images are splendid and sharp. plenty of controls on the lens. Highly recommend it for what I use it for, which mostly photography. The autofocus works great and is fast (on A7III and A7IV).

This is truly a superb lens. The corner-to-corner sharpness. When stopped down to 5.6/8 it's reminiscent of my view camera days. Expensive but worth it

Asked by: Hansen
The RX1RII is a great little camera for compact portability and fantastic image quality. But the battery life is atrocious! Even though I loved it, I ultimately had to part with it for that reason.

Is there noticeable chromatic aberration with this lens, compared to sigma lenses, for example?
Asked by: Molly
While there is some lateral CA present with the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM, it is considered by most professionals and reviewers to be not a significant amount. I'd recommend checking review sites for examples and measuring them against your personal levels of tolerance for CA.

Hi Jack, Sony's commitment to customer satisfaction is our top priority. The lens is not compatible with Canon mount and does not have any mount that will allow it to be used with Canon camera body. Thank you so much for your question. And thank you for choosing Sony.
