Impressively Bright, Surprisingly Compact
A classic wide-angle prime with an updated, sleek form factor, the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM is further characterized by its speed and advanced optical design. The versatile focal length suits everything from street shooting to landscape and documentary subjects, and the fast maximum aperture excels in low light and for controlling depth of field.
G Master Optical Design
As part of Sony's esteemed G Master series, this lens is designed to achieve a balance of impressive resolution and sharpness along with distinctive and pleasing bokeh.
  • Two XA (extreme aspherical) elements effectively control astigmatism, field curvature, coma, distortion, and other spherical aberrations for a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering.
  • One extra-low dispersion element reduces chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
  • Nano AR Coating II has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions. This updated coating is better suited for larger, curved elements and is especially adept at minimizing internal reflections.
Wide-Angle Versatility and f/1.4 Speed
  • The 35mm focal length is inherently versatile; perfectly suited for street, landscape, and reportage subjects, it also excels as a creative choice for other applications like fashion and portraiture.
  • Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also helps to control depth of field and produce selective focus effects.
  • Rounded 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Fast and Precise Focusing
Two XD Linear Motors provide quick, quiet, and precise autofocus and subject tracking performance. This design also contributes to more natural, intuitive Linear Response manual focus control and an AF/MF switch is located on the lens barrel for tactile control over this setting.
  • Internal focusing design offers more responsive focusing performance and maintains a consistent overall lens length during operation.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 9.8" suits making dynamic close-up images.
  • Despite its wide-angle field of view, the close minimum focusing distance and bright maximum aperture enable creating shallow depth of field imagery characterized by a strong close-up subject and a soft background.
Durable and Reliable Design
Besides signaling impressive optics, G Master lenses are also characterized by a robust and reliable physical construction that includes weather sealing and protective coatings.
  • Unique among fast wide-angle primes, the 35mm f/1.4 GM is distinguished by its sleek and lightweight form factor, measuring 3 x 3.9" and weighing 1.1 lb.
  • Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
  • Fluorine-coated front element resists dust, moisture, and fingerprints and is easy to clean.
  • A focus hold button is featured on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
  • Physical aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications.

Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM Reviews

so far so good

I just got this and have only been doing some quick testing with it, just to play around. things I noticed: * it's heavy, I'm not sure what the standard weight is for G master lenses since this is my first 'quality' lens. but it is heavier than my Sony 85 mm 1.8 *The images are crisp. taking photos at 10k iso indoors with my a7riii, at 1.4-5.6 at 10k iso looks like how my 85mm lens looks at 5.6 - f/8 at 250-500 iso. *There is a rubber lining on the lens hood that I love so I don't have to worry about bumping the glass when putting it on, or anything I put the lens hood against. * never had an aperture ring on a digital camera lens, and not sure how I feel about it yet, Right now I think I like it more than dialing it on camera. (There is an auto setting so you don't need to use this feature if you don't like it) * The glass where the lens attaches to the camera, it's going to be easy to clean, IDK why, but on my Sony 85mm there is a weird gap around the edges that is super hard to get stuff out of * The front glass lays nicely with the frame of the lens, also making it easier to clean. * The gears seem smooth, as well as the rings for the aperture and manual focus * The autofocus seems fast but I need to test more with it I will give more updates in the future as I use it, this is just right out of the box with no real testing. overall I'm happy with it right now.

All the rave reviews for this lens are true. It truly is superb. The only drawback is its relatively high price. The question for me was is it worth the upgrade from the older Zeiss 35/1.4? It is smaller, lighter and sharper than the older lens which I also own. I think I got one of the later good copies of the Zeiss 35mm f1.4 (earlier copies seem to have been plagued with quality control issues). Certainly at 100% magnification on 50 mp and 62 mp sensors, the GM is noticeably sharper and higher in contrast wide open but the difference is not huge. In normal use I think the image quality from the older lens is more than sufficient. You can do a little sharpening in post processing if you want. I decided to go ahead and purchase the GM but if cost were a limiting factor, the Zeiss is a very nice lens (albeit larger and heavier) at a much better price point. You can get them used now for a bargain.

I watched a ton of reviews for 35mm lenses and this is the one that is considered the benchmark in most of the reviews. It is expensive but the performance and build quality is so high that I (you) will never have to upgrade. If you can get past the price and 35mm fits your needs just do it and never look back. If the price IS an issue, there are several very good options from Sigma and Samyang.

I bought this with my a7rv and it has become one of my favorite combinations an has been in my bag ever since and goes with me everywhere. It's an absolute gem of a lens, sharp, light weight and feels so good and solid in the hand. I'll have this baby for many years to come.

This ultra-sharp lens makes beautiful sunstars and belongs in everyone's camera bag! Great focal length to represent a scene is a natural way. I also enjoy using this lens vertically to shoot panoramas.

Excellent choice as a prime lens for your Sony

I wanted a primary lens for the Sony, and initially picked up several of the f/2.5 lenses. They are nice and light, but not so good for portrait if you want the background OOF, so I bought this, and it is more or less permanently attached to my camera.
