Impressively Bright, Surprisingly Compact
A classic wide-angle prime with an updated, sleek form factor, the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM is further characterized by its speed and advanced optical design. The versatile focal length suits everything from street shooting to landscape and documentary subjects, and the fast maximum aperture excels in low light and for controlling depth of field.
G Master Optical Design
As part of Sony's esteemed G Master series, this lens is designed to achieve a balance of impressive resolution and sharpness along with distinctive and pleasing bokeh.
  • Two XA (extreme aspherical) elements effectively control astigmatism, field curvature, coma, distortion, and other spherical aberrations for a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering.
  • One extra-low dispersion element reduces chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
  • Nano AR Coating II has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions. This updated coating is better suited for larger, curved elements and is especially adept at minimizing internal reflections.
Wide-Angle Versatility and f/1.4 Speed
  • The 35mm focal length is inherently versatile; perfectly suited for street, landscape, and reportage subjects, it also excels as a creative choice for other applications like fashion and portraiture.
  • Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also helps to control depth of field and produce selective focus effects.
  • Rounded 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Fast and Precise Focusing
Two XD Linear Motors provide quick, quiet, and precise autofocus and subject tracking performance. This design also contributes to more natural, intuitive Linear Response manual focus control and an AF/MF switch is located on the lens barrel for tactile control over this setting.
  • Internal focusing design offers more responsive focusing performance and maintains a consistent overall lens length during operation.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 9.8" suits making dynamic close-up images.
  • Despite its wide-angle field of view, the close minimum focusing distance and bright maximum aperture enable creating shallow depth of field imagery characterized by a strong close-up subject and a soft background.
Durable and Reliable Design
Besides signaling impressive optics, G Master lenses are also characterized by a robust and reliable physical construction that includes weather sealing and protective coatings.
  • Unique among fast wide-angle primes, the 35mm f/1.4 GM is distinguished by its sleek and lightweight form factor, measuring 3 x 3.9" and weighing 1.1 lb.
  • Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
  • Fluorine-coated front element resists dust, moisture, and fingerprints and is easy to clean.
  • A focus hold button is featured on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
  • Physical aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications.

The Sony 35mm 1.4 G Master lens is an exceptional prime lens. The lens delivers unparalleled quality, speed, and clarity. The lens's build quality is impressive, and the autofocus system is incredibly fast and accurate; the manual focus ring allows for precise focusing, even in low-light conditions. The lens's sharpness is outstanding and has a beautiful bokeh effect. This lens is an excellent investment whether you're capturing portraits or landscapes.

Perfect for my need

I tattoo people and find that to get good clear photos of my work upon completion of it, a mild wide angle lens with a wide aperture works best. I'd tried a number of settings with a standard zoon before settling on 35mm, and since I shoot indoors and flash or bright spot lighting makes for tons of glare on the skin I wanted the widest possible aperture. After reading a number of reviews I opted to get this to try it and I am very pleased, it is a great sharp lens that works well even beyond settings I'd usually use while also being a reasonable size and weight, eminently usable for handheld shoots with impatient clients. Perfect for me!

Awesome prime lens I should have purchased a long time ago. Using first party glass on my Sony A7IV does make a difference. This is my first of many GM lenses I will purchase in the near future for professional work.

Super sharp, fast focusing, near silent, amazingly compact and light and of course excellent build quality and feel. Absolute minimal distortion, vignetting and CA. This is a superb lens when you need to get a bit more of the background in your shot or if you are in a tighter space. Low light focusing is also wonderful with the 35 1.4!

Best 35 mm for Sony.

The Sony 35 f/1.4 GM is an excellent lens. It's sharp, fast, and compact. The AF is quiet and quick. It is significantly more expensive than other options in the 35 mm range, but in my opinion, it's worth it if you can make it work for your budget. It's quickly becoming my favorite everyday lens.

The best 35mm for Sony full frame cameras

There are a lot of options for 35mm lenses and it really depends on what you are willing to spend, do you need lightweight, do you do both video and photo, do you need ultimate sharpness? I have used various third party lenses, I have used the Sony 35mm f1.8 lens (it is a nice lightweight option as well), and have settled on this one. I have used 35mm lenses on Sony A7III, A7C, A7Riii, A9, and currently using this on the A7IV. I shoot both photos and videos and I like a lightweight kit. I also own the Sony 24mm f1.4 GM and the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DGDN lenses, so I have a fast, quality set of sharp primes (usually take only 2 of them depending on what I think I will be shooting). For those shooting video with this lens, there is focus breathing you need to be aware of, so it can be dealt with if you have the A7IV with the focus breathing correction. If not, this could be a deal breaker for you. The lens is sharp, focuses fast, has good color, and is just a bit over a pound in weight, so a smallish lens that is good for walk around, street, portrait, and a nice if I could only take one prime with me type lens.

Asked by: Hansen
The RX1RII is a great little camera for compact portability and fantastic image quality. But the battery life is atrocious! Even though I loved it, I ultimately had to part with it for that reason.

Is there noticeable chromatic aberration with this lens, compared to sigma lenses, for example?
Asked by: Molly
While there is some lateral CA present with the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM, it is considered by most professionals and reviewers to be not a significant amount. I'd recommend checking review sites for examples and measuring them against your personal levels of tolerance for CA.
