Synology WD Overview

This B&H Kit combines the Synology DiskStation DS1520+ 5-Bay NAS Enclosure with five WD 4TB Red Plus 5400 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD for a storage capacity of 20TB.

Synology DiskStation DS1520+ 5-Bay NAS Enclosure

Built with a quad-core processor, an AES-NI hardware encryption engine, and Btrfs file system support, the DiskStation DS1520+ 5-Bay NAS Enclosure from Synology is designed for small offices and IT enthusiasts. Two built-in M.2 2280 SSD slots and Synology SSD Cache technology allow you to boost system I/O and application performance and, with a scalable storage design, you can start small and expand the storage capacity with the Synology DX517 as your data grows. This NAS is equipped with five drive bays that are capable of natively supporting 3.5" SATA hard drives, as well as 2.5" SATA hard drives and SSDs for data storage. The data stored on this NAS, which includes videos, music, photos, and documents with up to 2048 user accounts and 2000 maximum concurrent connections.

The DS1520+ runs on the Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) OS, which is a browser-based operating system which helps to simplify managing your Synology NAS. Its CPU is a 2.0 GHz Intel Celeron J4125 Quad-Core that is paired with 8GB of DDR4 RAM, both of which allow frequently used files and applications to be quickly accessed. The NAS is capable of achieving sequential read speeds of up to 451.28 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 451.18.

Also featured are two USB 3.0 Type-A ports and two eSATA ports which allow it to be connected to your Windows or Mac system, and network connectivity is achieved via the four Gigabit Ethernet ports that support Link Aggregation and Failover, allowing your stored data to be shared with users throughout the network. For those who require RAID support, the DS1520+ supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, and 10, as well Synology Hybrid RAID and Basic RAID, each of which offers performance, data redundancy, or a combination of both. For those who do not require a RAID, JBOD is also available, allowing each drive bay to be individually utilized.

The DS1520+ is engineered to be energy efficient. Not only does it offer two 92 x 92 x 25mm fans to help keep the system running cool always, its noise-dampening design makes for quiet operations. The server supports numerous scheduled power on / off cycles and hard drive hibernation to further minimize power consumption and operation expenses. The Synology DiskStation DS1520+ 5-Bay NAS Enclosure operates on 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz and includes an accessory pack, an AC adapter, an AC power cord, and two RJ45 LAN cables. Protection is provided by a limited 3-year warranty.

After moving everything over from my opd Netgear Ready Nas RN104, i have to say this NAS is a huge jump in speed. I love it. And the OS is much simpler to use than the Netgear one.

I had a WD MyBook NAS that failed after 7 years. It served its purpose but the user interface was slow with very basic features. Over the years, I have heard tech pundits praise Synology NAS devices and finding the DS220j on sale sealed the deal for me. I configured the NAS with Raid to mirror one drive to the other, so 8TB is really only 4TB. The user interface is responsive and has so many features. I recommend potential buyers search YouTube for reviews of this unit. I could not be happier with this purchase!

But as someone who has never messed with anything like this, the learning curve is extremely high. Even the help section on the Synology website is useless for dummies like me. It seems it was written for people familiar with the terminology and a bit more knowledge of networking than I have. I don't regret buying it. I am slowly learning how things work, but I have a long way to go. There just needs to be a Synology NAS for Dummies somewhere out there. Something SPECIFIC to Synology DSM 7.

I have several Synology NAS devices for home and business, and they are always reliable. Easy to set up and configure (even though they are Linux based). Never had an issue accessing them and you can configure them to a fine level of detail for user or group access rights. You have tons of application options to add to the device. I use the Drive application significantly and it works great for my business. You cannot go wrong with these NAS devices. Highly recommend.

    Asked by: John
It will certainly work with Time Machine. Keep in mind that if you are using this with Time Machine, it is recommended that you partition the unit to only allow Time Machine to use a specified amount of storage. Otherwise, it will use up all 8TB.

    Asked by: Elie
This would depend on how the Synology 24TB DiskStation DS220+ is set up. If it's set up as JBOD, you can upgrade the storage as needed. However, if set up as RAID 0 or 1, then both drives need to be swapped out.

Using the Cloud Sync 'package' that you can access via Synololgy's Package Center, you can set syncing with Google Drive and Dropbox. Adobe Cloud would require locating the the sync folder on the NAS, and then to sync with Adobe Cloud.
