FUJIFILM GF 80mm f/1.7 R WR Overview

Distinguished by its impressive speed, the FUJIFILM GF 80mm f/1.7 R WR is a short portrait-length prime built for the GFX mirrorless medium format system. This 63mm-equivalent lens pairs a slightly narrow focal length with an extremely bright maximum aperture for flexible depth of field control and impressive low-light performance.
Perfect for Portraiture
With a 63mm equivalent focal length, this lens is wider than typical portrait-length lenses. This enables capturing more context and a broader field of view while still having the selectiveness of a lens that's longer than normal. This focal length also pairs with an impressively bright f/1.7 maximum aperture that gives a huge range of depth of field control and excels in low-light conditions.
  • Sweet-spot focal length offers increased versatility for a variety of portrait scenarios, including group shots or tighter mid-length perspectives.
  • Nine rounded diaphragm blades contribute to an especially smooth bokeh quality that renders a pleasing subject-background separation to place more attention on the desired subject.
  • Two Super ED elements reduce fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to deliver high color fidelity and clarity.
  • An aspherical element also delivers a high degree of sharpness and reduces distortion for natural, realistic rendering at various focusing distances.
Reliable Autofocus and Design
Autofocus accuracy is critical when working with a bright design and shallow depth of field; the GF 80mm f/1.7 R WR features a powerful DC motor and high-precision GMR sensor to deliver focusing performance that's both quick and accurate to help catch fleeting and decisive moments.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 2.3' and a maximum magnification of 0.15x offer enough focusing versatility to photograph group and full-length portraits as well as closer mid-length shots that focus on subject's torsos and heads.
  • Despite the large maximum aperture, the lens remains relatively compact and lightweight, measuring just 3.9" long and weighing 1.75 lb, enabling easy handheld use for more freedom while shooting.
  • Dust- and weather-sealed physical construction enables working in harsh climates and temperatures as low as 14°F.
  • Front element features a fluorine coating for easy cleaning and to repel dust, dirt, and moisture.
  • Physical aperture ring allows for intuitive adjustment over exposure settings and incorporates a C (Command) position to permit camera-based aperture setting.

I have a 50mm, 110mm, 32-64mm, and now the missing link, the awesome 80mm. Tack sharp, takes great images.

Astonishing optical quality and character at the same time. Fujifilm did their homework well. Bulky, but not large and heavy, but not too heavy if we consider that it's a made for a large sensor. I owned bulkier 85mm lenses for 35mm format in the past, so I'm ok with this.

Crisp lens. It became my favorite. Gives you more control and more options then an f/4 lens. Great for studio . Smaller and lighter then zoom lenses. Expensive but worth it. I tested it against the 50mm one and it's way better in every aspect.

Superb.

The lens feels like a bigger Fuji XF 35mm f1.4. The rendering is similar and produces beautiful images. The focus motor is slower and noisier than I like, but it is not a deal breaker for me. The f1.7 aperture is such a welcomed option to have.

Amazing image quality

Like all my other GF lens, this one is amazing. Image quality is phenomenal. Wide open the focus plane is super sharp. It is on the heavy side due to all the glass needed for such a luminous lens. Not the ideal street lens...

This lens really gives you that Medium format look. I own the 50mm and 45-100mm and I think this will stay on my camera most of the time now. No their there is anything wrong with those other lense, they serve their purpose, but F/1.7can be a lot of fun and give you a different perspective on things. The quality of this lens is great, seems to be on par with my other lenses. I haven't used it enough to say it's better or worse. My 45-100mm gives fantastic results. As for cons... As with all of these lenses, the PRICE. It makes it very hard to justify a lens like this when on full frame it would be about $1k, if that. I got it on sale for$1850, and it still feels very overpriced! The other downside for me that correlates with the price is the lack of Linear Motor. With this being medium format, and things being slower, I don't understand why Fujifilm doesn't have linear motors in all of their lenses. They say it would cost more. Well, all I can say is, figure out a way! Its ridiculous for them not to have LM in every lens for medium format. Now, this isn't a complaint or disappointment about the lens, I knew this going into it and what to expect. For stationary things, this is a very fine lens. and you can get some moving subjects with it also of course, but just don't have huge expectations. Over all a very good lens for the GFX lineup but try to get it used or on sale. I included some early test images.

Is the focusing ring on this lens very loose and ...

Is the focusing ring on this lens very loose and unstable or is it my version? It has almost no resistance to turning and will move at the slightest touch. It is very different from my 45mmGX lens.

Unfortunately, you seem to have a defective unit. The tension on the focusing ring for FUJIFILM GF 80mm f/1.7 R WR Lens is the same as FUJIFILM GF 45mm f/2.8 R WR Lens.
