FUJIFILM GF 80mm f/1.7 R WR Overview

Distinguished by its impressive speed, the FUJIFILM GF 80mm f/1.7 R WR is a short portrait-length prime for the G-mount GFX mirrorless medium format system. The bright f/1.7 maximum aperture excels in low-light conditions and also benefits depth of field control for precise selective focus applications. Optically, the lens uses a pair of low dispersion elements and one aspherical element, which correct a variety of aberrations and help to achieve high sharpness and clarity. Despite its fast design, this lens is relatively compact and lightweight for handheld use and sports a dust and weather-sealed design for working in trying conditions.

Short portrait-length prime lens offers a 63mm equivalent focal length to realize a slightly narrowed field of view for isolating subject matter.
Impressively bright f/1.7 maximum aperture offers great control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques and also suits working in low-light conditions.
Two Super ED elements greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the aperture and focusing ranges for notable clarity and color fidelity.
One aspherical element controls distortion and spherical aberrations in order to achieve high sharpness and accurate rendering.
Physical aperture ring allows for intuitive adjustment over exposure settings and incorporates a C (Command) position to permit camera-based aperture setting.
Dust- and weather-sealed physical construction enables working in harsh climates and temperatures as low as 14°F. Also, the front element features a fluorine coating to repel dust, dirt, and moisture and to aid in cleaning.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

FUJIFILM GF 80mm f/1.7 R WR Reviews

Crisp lens

Crisp lens. It became my favorite. Gives you more control and more options then an f/4 lens. Great for studio . Smaller and lighter then zoom lenses. Expensive but worth it. I tested it against the 50mm one and it's way better in every aspect.

I never thought I'd find a better lens than my old FujuFilm XF 35mm, but this is it. Such amazing rendition and resolving power!

Great lens - one of Fuji's very best

I've read many recent reviews of this lens, some glowing and some with reservations and all of the less than positive comments seem to come from newbie medium format people with little or no other experience of the format complaining about the slow autofocus. No, it's not (nor are any of the other GF lenses, or come to that, any other medium format lenses) as fast-focusing as the best professional level FF lenses or bodies. If you want this kind of stunning resolution, then simple physics dictates that ultra-fast focusing with the huge amount of solid glass involved simply won't happen. Why do you think that ALL professional sports photographers are using FF bodies with only 20mp of resolution and 20 fps? No such thing as a free lunch here, guys & gals. Medium format isn't spray-and-pray. If you only want to take pictures of your cat galloping across the lawn, buy an appropriate camera for that. A Sony A7R III / IV or Nikon Z7 or something, as opposed to medium format. This lens is to my mind, as a product photographer, the perfect lens at its focal length. It marries very well with GFX100 bodies - extremely well balanced and easy to focus manually. Not too heavy, and not too big and not too slow. The autofocus is quicker and more accurate for example than my Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II lens on a 5D3, and that is still considered the professional go-to FF portraiture lens. Yes, it's fractionally slower to focus than other lenses, both FF and Medium that have linear autofocus motors (this has a DC, according to Fuji), but quicker L-A motors are bigger, heavier and more expensive. You pays your money and takes your choice. This is neither a heavy, nor an expensive lens for medium format. As a studio lens, it's magnificent. At f:5.6 through f:11 it's as crisp right up to the corners as any other Fuji lens, including the 110GF or 120GF. It's depth of field wide open is so close to the 110 that you won't really be able to, or have the time, to tell the difference. Anyway, for a waist-up portrait lens, the corner sharpness wide open isn't quite so important as for head-shot close-ups (as with the 110). Not that this is particularly my thing, but this lens is brilliant for hand held ultra-low key shots at wide apertures. Don't let all the bench distortion, field curvature or MTF tests confuse you. These things are all but irrelevant in the real world. This is one of the very best general photography medium format lenses and a near perfect lens in my world and I absolutely love it. It could only be better for me if it had slightly closer focus. but then it would be heavier, larger and more expensive. All the compromises are right, here. If only my picture taking eyes and brain were even half as good as anything Fuji makes these days. Just reflect on what a Diane Arbus or a John Minihan could do with a camera-lens combination like this.

I just ran 1000 images through this lens in a supermodel shoot and it came through like a champ in both normal and low light conditions.

Superb.

The lens feels like a bigger Fuji XF 35mm f1.4. The rendering is similar and produces beautiful images. The focus motor is slower and noisier than I like, but it is not a deal breaker for me. The f1.7 aperture is such a welcomed option to have.

Amazing image quality

Like all my other GF lens, this one is amazing. Image quality is phenomenal. Wide open the focus plane is super sharp. It is on the heavy side due to all the glass needed for such a luminous lens. Not the ideal street lens...

Is the focusing ring on this lens very loose and unstable or is it my version? It has almost no resistance to turning and will move at the slightest touch. It is very different from my 45mmGX lens.

Unfortunately, you seem to have a defective unit. The tension on the focusing ring for FUJIFILM GF 80mm f/1.7 R WR Lens is the same as FUJIFILM GF 45mm f/2.8 R WR Lens.
