Synology RS3621RPxs External HDD Overview

Engineered to deliver high throughput and robust data protection to help safeguard mission-critical info, the RackStation RS3621RPxs 12-Bay NAS Enclosure from Synology is a 12-bay, 2 RU storage solution with built-in 500W redundant power supplies, ECC memory, and the Btrfs file system that can handle the demanding workloads of modern business environments. This unit has 12 drive bays, each of which natively supports 3.5" SATA hard drives, as well as 2.5" SATA hard drives and SSDs. Should users need to expand the overall capacity of their RS3621RPxs, two optional RX1217/RX1217RP expansion units may be used to connect up to 24 additional drive bays, and each unit is connected using an integrated expansion port. The RS3621RPxs can deliver 4K random reads of up to 189,098 IOPS and sequential reads of up to 4718 MB/s.

The RackStation RS3621RPxs is powered by a 2.2 GHz Intel Xeon D-1531 Six-Core processor, which will allow you to run multiple functions simultaneously. The built-in 8GB of DDR4 ECC RAM will allow quick access to frequently used files and programs and may also be upgraded to a total of 64GB by installing a 16GB module into each of the four DIMM slots. Also featured are two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, which allow it to be connected to external peripherals. Network connectivity is achieved via the four Gigabit Ethernet ports with failover support, which help to provide redundancy in the case that a LAN connection malfunction occurs on one port. In addition, link aggregation, powered by four LAN ports, helps to increase connection speeds beyond the limits of a single network port or cable. If you're looking to expand this NAS, there are two PCIe Gen 3.0 x8/x8 slots that support 10GbE network interface cards and M.2 NVMe adapter cards for an SSD cache.

The RackStation RS3621RPxs runs on the DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system, which helps simplify managing your NAS, as well as accessing and sharing data. A variety of RAID modes are supported, which help provide users with data redundancy, speed, or a combination of both. Supported RAID modes include RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, Basic, and Synology RAID F1. For those who do not require a RAID, JBOD is also available, allowing each drive bay to be individually utilized.

Synology has engineered the RackStation RS3621RPxs to be energy efficient. Not only does it offer four 80 x 80mm fans to help keep the system running cool, the server supports numerous scheduled power on / off cycles and hard-drive hibernation to further minimize power consumption and operation expenses. The RackStation RS3621RPxs operates on 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz and includes an accessory pack and two AC power cords. Protection is provided by a limited 5-year hardware warranty.

Synology RS3621RPxs External HDD Reviews

Save your money and get something else

We purchased replacement drives for our existing NAS then decided to replace the NAS with this unit 6/2021. We then find out the drives we purchased are not supported by this NAS even though they are supported by the direct predecessor of this NAS (RS3617rp). You can indeed use unsupported drives but you will not get any reporting and everything the drives touch such as arrays, volumes, and LUNs will be in a permanent critical error state. Synology's decision to severely limit the drive options for this product is ridiculous. For full transparency we did end up buying supported drives (96TB @ $3,840) and kept the unit and it does work so far and we are now buying a 2nd as a backup. If we were to start over again from scratch we would not have bought the RS3621RPxs. I cannot recommend this item to others.

Interesting Decision by Synology

They work very similar to the RS3617RPxs that I am replacing and have a lot of similar features. Be warned though that Synology's compatible drive list is much different for these. When I moved my Micron 5200 Pro SSDs (Synology compatible) from the RS3617RPxs to the RS3621RPxs they showed up as Critical and Unverified drives. The RP3621RPxs still works as it should, but it won't monitor the drives properly. When I checked their compatible drive matrix for the new units, it is mostly Synology drives with 1 or 2 non-Synology branded drives. One of the best features of the Synology's was being able to migrate drives from one unit to another without losing any data. I didn't lose data, but I technically have fewer features now since the new Synology won't monitor my drives. Terrible move by Synology. B&H was excellent as always with the order, handling, etc.
