Sony a9 II Mirrorless Camera
Next Level Speed
The second generation of speed, the Sony a9 II takes the impressive feature-set of its predecessor and adds enhanced connectivity, a refined body design, and even quicker performance. Utilizing the proven 24.2MP full-frame Exmor RS BSI stacked CMOS sensor and an updated BIONZ X processor, the a9 II sports especially quick and responsive shooting capabilities. And the updated construction now sports a more ergonomic shape, improved weather sealing, and better connectivity and transfer speeds.
Exmor RS BSI Stacked Sensor and BIONZ X Image Processor
24.2MP Full-Frame Stacked CMOS Sensor
Built for speed, the a9 II utilizes a 24.2MP Exmor RS BSI stacked CMOS sensor, along with an updated BIONZ X image processor, that yields impressively quick and responsive performance. Up to 20 fps continuous shooting is possible using an electronic shutter or 10 fps shooting is supported with a mechanical shutter. The sensor's back-illuminated design also affords high sensitivity to an extended ISO 204800 with reduced noise for clean image quality in a variety of lighting conditions. Additionally, uncompressed raw files can be recorded in 14-bit for greater color fidelity and post-production flexibility.
BIONZ X Processing and Electronic Shutter
The BIONZ X processor also works in conjunction with a high-speed front-end LSI to realize faster processing times along with a wide dynamic range with smooth tonal rendering. Benefitting the fast recording capabilities is an equally quick AF/AE metering system that functions at 60 times per second to continuously evaluate the scene in order to lock onto and track moving subjects. Automatic anti-flicker shooting also recognizes and times the shutter action to minimize the flicker effect for more consistent results on still images. Additionally, due to the use of an electronic shutter, totally blackout-free monitoring is possible with the electronic viewfinder for more accurate compositions of moving subjects.
Autofocus and Image Stabilization
Fast Hybrid AF System
Covering 93% of the image area, a Fast Hybrid AF system incorporates 693 phase-detection points along with 425 contrast-detection areas for quick and precise focusing in a variety of lighting conditions with sensitivity down to -3 EV. The density of focusing points from this hybrid AF system also enables High-density Tracking AF Technology, which is adept at tracking moving subjects in a variety of lighting conditions. Updated AF algorithms also benefit maintaining critical focus on erratically or unpredictably moving subjects.
  • Lock-on AF maintains focus on moving subjects throughout the use of a configurable frame that is set over the desired moving subject
  • Expand Flexible Spot employs neighboring focus points to retain focus on moving subjects even if the originally selected point loses focus
  • Focus frame color is selectable, between white and red, and AF tracking is possible with apertures narrower than f/16 with select lenses when working in Focus Priority mode
  • Eye AF can be used to base focus on recognized human subjects' eyes for portraits and is available in both AF-S and AF-C modes, for both stills and video. Eye AF can be used when photographing animal subjects, too, with any focusing mode when shooting stills
  • Focus Magnifier function can be used for critical focus when homing in on minute subject details
  • Rear touchscreen can also be used for Touch Focus control, and a Touchpad Focus Control mode lets you use the rear screen intuitively while keeping your eye to the viewfinder
  • When working in AF-C mode, the focus point can be moved while the shutter button is half-pressed, making it easier to quickly shift focus without losing sight of the action
5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Image Stabilization
The a9 II incorporates an enhanced 5.5-stop effective 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization system, which compensates for five different types of camera shake encountered during handheld shooting of stills and video. This allows users to confidently use any lens, even adapted lenses, for critical imaging without encountering blur from camera shake.

For long focal lengths, the system will correct for pitch and yaw adjustments. Macro and high-magnification imagery, on the other hand, will benefit from the inclusion of horizontal and vertical shift compensation. All shooting styles will get usage out of the roll compensation. All 5 axes of stabilization will function at all times, even when used with third-party lenses and adapters or lenses with built-in optical stabilization.
UHD 4K Video Recording in XAVC S Format
Internal recording of UHD 4K movies is possible in multiple frame rates up to 30 fps and, based on the Super35mm recording area and effective 6K resolution, oversampling renders greater detail and full pixel readout is possible, that is void of pixel binning, for higher quality imagery with reduced moiré and aliasing. Full-frame 4K recording has also been dramatically improved for improved quality when working at mid to high sensitivities to permit full use of the entire sensor width. Full HD 1080p recording is also supported in frame rates up to 120 fps, and both resolutions utilize the 100 Mbps XAVC S format contained within an MP4 wrapper with 4:2:0 sampling. The high-speed, 120 fps recording also enables 4x and 5x slow-motion movie recording with the frame rate set to either 30p or 24p. In addition to high-resolution internal recording, uncompressed HDMI output also enables the use of an optional external recorder for clean 4K recording with 4:2:2 sampling.
Refined Body Design
  • A Quad-VGA OLED Tru-Finder EVF is featured and has a 3.69m-dot resolution and 0.78x-magnification for bright, clear viewing in rich detail, and a dedicated High Quality setting enables a 120 fps refresh rate for especially smooth playback of moving subjects. Additionally, a fluorine coating has been applied to the outermost viewfinder element to benefit cleaning.
  • In addition to the EVF, a 3.0" 1.44m-dot rear LCD is also available, which has a touch panel design for intuitive operation and focusing control. The screen also tilts upward and downward to benefit working from high and low angles.
  • Magnesium alloy chassis assures rigidity, durability, and stability while remaining lightweight. The lens mount has also been improved to better support heavy lenses, and the grip rigidity has been improved for more comfortable hand-holding.
  • Extensive weather-sealing, including enhanced sealing around the battery cover, terminal cover, and chassis joints, has been employed to resist dust and moisture for reliable operation in harsh weather conditions.
  • Using the same NP-FZ100 battery as its predecessor, the a9 II's battery life is rated for approximately 500 shots per charge with the EVF or 690 shots with the rear LCD.
  • Durable shutter design has been tested for 500,000 actuations.
  • Compatible with optional VG-C4EM Vertical Grip.
  • Dual SD memory card slots allow for flexible file saving and handling and can be configured to partition raw and JPEG files or can be used for overflow recording. Both of the card slots are rated to support UHS-II memory cards for faster transfer speeds.
  • USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C port is featured, in addition to a micro-USB port, for faster, more reliable tethering support. The USB Type-C connection allows the camera to be charged from the host power source while connected.
  • Integrated PC sync terminal for wired flash sync with strobe packs or wireless radio remotes.
  • Updated Multi Interface Shoe supports working with the optional ECM-B1M Shotgun Microphone or XLR-K3M XLR Adapter Kit, which provide improved, clear audio recording sound by sending a digital audio signal to the camera, opposed to an analog signal.
  • Both 3.5mm microphone and headphone ports are featured for improved quality and control over audio when recording videos.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi enables the a9 II to instantly share imagery to mobile devices for direct sharing online, and support for both 2.4 and 5 GHz bands also enables wireless tethered shooting support. NFC (Near Field Communication) is also supported, which allows for one-touch connection between the camera and compatible mobile devices; no complex set-up is required. Once connected, the linked mobile device can also display a live view image on its screen and remotely control the camera's shutter.
  • Bluetooth connectivity allows for location data acquisition.
  • Integrated Ethernet port has been upgraded to 1000BASE-T speed for quick wired LAN sharing and remote operation.
  • When working over a wired LAN, the Remote Camera Tool 2.1 app now has been enhanced for a reduced release time lag and live view delays as well as support for remote SD card formatting, FTP server switching, and changes to the still image storage destination. Wired or wireless LAN transfers can also occur in the background, while continuing to shoot.
  • Imaging Edge Remote for desktop now supports the a9 II for PC Remote shooting via the Wi-Fi connection or tethered by the wired USB Type-C port. An updated data transfer control now makes it possible to transfer files from an SD card over Wi-Fi using the Imaging Edge Mobile app even when the camera is powered off.
  • Transfer & Tagging add-on app can send FTP setting parameters from your mobile device to the camera, offers automatic data upload to an FTP server with attached metadata, and can perform automatic voice-to-text conversion.
  • Voice Memos can be recorded in conjunction with still images and allow for attaching up to 60-second-long sound recordings to individual images. Saved as WAV audio files, these memos can be attached to files and played when the images are reviewed. Using the Transfer & Tagging add-on on a smartphone, you can automatically or manually convert this audio into text to be embedded in the image's metadata.
  • Save/load camera settings is possible in-camera as well as to an SD card for working with the same shooting settings with multiple camera bodies.
  • Customizable Fn button can be set to handle separate tasks depending on if working in stills or video modes.
  • Up to 10 distinct FTP settings can be saved and stored to an SD card, or up to 20 different settings can be saved via the Imaging Edge Mobile app.
Sony Xperia PRO 5G Smartphone

Created for mobile filmmakers, photographers, and broadcasters, the Xperia PRO 512GB 5G Smartphone from Sony has been engineered to live stream and upload high-resolution content at blistering 5G mmWave speeds. To ensure you get the fastest speeds possible, a Network Visualizer app can be used to test signal strength, letting you set up live shots in the best possible location. Other technologies, such as a body made from a low dielectric constant material and 360° beamforming antenna, further boost your ability to achieve and sustain a strong 5G signal. (Please note that sub-6 support requires a software update)

With the connection of an (optional) Micro-HDMI cable between your camera or camcorder and the Xperia PRO, you can live broadcast/livestream what your camera sees through the Xperia PRO's 5G cellular connection. You can also use the Micro-HDMI connection to utilize the phone's brilliant 21:9 CinemaWide 6.5" 4K HDR OLED screen as a pro-style live monitor, offering more accurate color and image representation onscreen. This high-quality output is made possible with Creator Mode, which provides a BT.2020 color space, DCI-P3 100% color gamut, and a calibrated D65 white point.

360-Degree Beamforming Antenna
Achieving a solid 5G mmWave connection is essential in mission-critical applications, especially live streams and broadcasts. This is why Sony selected a 360° antenna with beamforming technology. The antenna can transmit and receive through all sides of the Xperia PRO, while the beamforming technology focuses the antenna on an available signal to maximize its efficacy.
5G Endurance Mode
When activated, this will let an operator continuously transfer data at maximum 5G mmWave speeds while being tethered to a camera.
Network Visualizer App
Just like there can be connection dead spots in your home, while on location it's imperative that you set up your gear in a prime location with a strong signal. The Network Visualizer app lets you use the Xperia PRO to navigate your surroundings to locate strong 5G mmWave reception. It can also work with 4G/LTE signals, provides a histogram, and displays data throughput.
Video Monitoring via HDMI
In addition to a USB Type-C port for tethering, a micro-HDMI port is integrated for live video monitoring when attached to professional cameras. The port allows for more accurate color reproduction of what you're filming with YCbCr 4:2:2 8-bit/RGB 8-bit support, and incoming video is displayed at up to 4K resolutions at your choice of 24, 30, or 60 fps as needed.
Professional Camera System
When you're not using the Xperia PRO for its monitor and connectivity features, you can use its triple camera array to capture pro-quality mobile content. They can record stills in a variety of formats and videos at up to 4K HDR resolution at a 21:9 aspect ratio at 24, 30, 60, and 120 fps:

  • 12MP Ultra-Wide: 16mm focal length, f/2.2 aperture, 1/2.55 Exmore RS sensor, and 124° FOV
  • 12MP Wide: 24mm focal length, f/1.7 aperture, 1/1.7 Exmor RS sensor, and 82° FOV
  • 12MP Telephoto: 70mm focal length, f/2.4 aperture, 1/3.4" sensor, and 34° FOV

The system was developed in conjunction with Sony Alpha 9 engineers to ensure quality and provide much-desired features not normally found in a mobile phone. Features like manual controls, support for shooting raw, up to 20 fps continuous wide-angle shooting (up to 10 fps at 16 or 70mm), and real-time eye autofocus that works on both humans and animals. These engineers also used premium calibrated ZEISS optics with ZEISS T-coating to boost contrast and reduce reflections.

External Monitor
When attached to your camera and used as an external monitor, the Xperia PRO offers a host of additional capabilities. You can livestream what your camera sees online, use waveform to check the exposure and RGB balance, and use false color to assist with iris setting selections by ensuring the details for exposure are more noticeable.

You also get a trigger function for recording and stopping via a USB Type-C cable and on-screen statuses that include whether you're recording or not, shutter speed, f-stop, ISO, and EV. When connected to an Alpha camera, you can even control features of the Alpha itself.
IP65/68 and Corning Gorilla Glass 6
It's not always a bright and sunny day when you're out in the field. This is why Sony made sure the Xperia PRO can keep up with the rest of your kit. The IP65/68 rating translates to a smartphone that is completely dustproof and able to withstand rain and short periods of complete and continuous immersion in water. The Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection on the front of the phone is made to deliver significant scratch and damage resistance.
High-Quality Audio
When you want to wind down with some music, the Xperia PRO is capable of playing back Hi-Res Audio wirelessly or via a 3.5mm jack. It features front-firing stereo speakers and supports 360 Reality Audio decoding, Dolby ATMOS, DSEE Ultimate, HD audio, Qualcomm aptX, and audio recording in stereo.
Long-Lasting Battery
To ensure long battery life, the Xperia PRO comes with a sizable 4000 mAh battery and two features to guard the phone against damage while charging. Battery Care delivers overcharging protection, while Xperia Adaptive Charging works to make sure the battery is not overworked during the recharge process.
Shortcut Button
We all have that one app we constantly use. A built-in shortcut button can be programmed to launch the go-to app of your choice, such as the Network Visualizer.

Sony A9 II Reviews

Nearly perfect-and a blast to use

Plenty of pixels to suit me; great dynamic range and low light performance; fast and crisp focus; 20 new-focus frames per second; stunningly good tracking. The only thing I've had go wrong is that the focus system gets locked into a focus distance with a blurry image and won't focus on the scene just a few meters farther distant. This has only happened two or three times in several hundred hours of use. The fix is to focus on something close and try again. I have missed a few good shots because of it, but I've made hundreds of good shots that I could never get with my previous camera. I'm very happy with the A9II.

Awesome piece of gear!!

I love this camera! I have not been disappointed with this purchase. I mainly shoot real estate but I love this camera body for action/nature photography.

Top of the line

Amazing camera. Performs perfectly out of the box. I have done a wedding, sports, and wildlife with this camera so far and it excels at it all! Expensive, but I don't see me needing a new body for quite some time!

I have been a happy a9II owner since December 2019 when I purchased it from B&H in person plus a couple of lenses and other accessories. This has been my main camera body and I wanted to get my hands on the A1 but its price being so high, made me jump on the R5 as it makes sense to me since I still own a bunch of Canon glass. Things I would love to be better on the a9II: 1-Better viewfinder 2-Better LCD monitor 3-More FPS when using the mechanical shutter 4-Fully articulated LCD screen 5-Better cards to be used with this camera, SD is very slow... Things I love about the a9II: 1-Excellent DR of its sensor 2-Quality of the files at high ISO (6400 and 12800) 3-4K video in the full frame

Worthy successor

Tons of reviews already written. Improvements to my a9? 10 fps, mechanical shutter and ANTI-FLICKER Yes!

Such an amazing camera! Very easy to learn all the dials and settings! I use this for professional disc golf photos/videos and bird photography. Buy it! Worth every penny.

Does anyone have an issue with the new grip pressing/irritating the top fingers especially when using longer lenses?
Asked by: Derek
So far the universal response to this (and the a7R MKIV's) new and enhanced grip has been entirely positive. As you can see from the side view, it's smaller on top so that part of it is still similar to that of its predecessor. Have you experienced any issues with the new grip?

How does this camera do in hot weather? I've had a lot of issues with the A7RIV overheating when I was filming/shooting outdoors. It didn't take much, maybe 30 minutes in the afternoon and it will start turning off. Does the A9 have the same issue?
Asked by: Nathaniel
Yes the Sony A9ii can also overheat in hot weather.

I see there is an special dial for af, will anyway be the option to define a custom key to change quickly from af-c to af-s if hold? or the only way to do this is by moving the dial?
Asked by: Ezequiel Jose
You can set almost any button the camera as a custom key, including the 3 custom keys, so yes.

Ok I have the Sony A7iii and love it, as I do bird photography and Video using my DJI RSC2. But I need the faster focus tracking like the A9 , but I will have to sell my A7iii to get the A9 from you. But the A9 does not have picture profiles . Will the A9 still do good video using standard video profile?
Asked by: Jerry
Though the A9 does not have picture profiles, the standard video profile is more than fine and can even still be adjusted slightly if you need to make minor adjustments in post. But overall, the A9 would be a much better suited camera when it comes to speed and tracking for bird photography and videography.

How will be this camera for video? I know it will obviously not be bad, but with an alpha 7iii it’s possible to get pretty sharp images already and I am wondering if this would be possible with this one. I really need that versatility in a camera.
Asked by: Allan
The Sony Alpha a9 II Mirrorless Digital Camera would be a great option for video recording usage needs.

Which camera would be more versatile for wildlife photography, the Sony A9II or the Sony A 7R IV ?
Asked by: William
Silent shooting with the stacked sensor is also a large plus with the A9 II. While the A7RIV can also shoot silently the image can look like jello if it is moving quickly. This can be a big plus if close to wildlife. It is also good because people don't know exactly when you are taking pictures and when you are not. The biggest plus of the A7RIV is how much you can crop and keep good resolution. Files for the A7RIV will take a lot of processing power (need a powerful laptop and desktop to edit) and hard drive space (you'll likely need a few extra hard drives), but the level of detail is absolutely amazing. The focus is better on the A9ii according to reviews while you will potentially miss some shots on the A7RIV that the A9ii will deliver.
