Canon ES-71 II overview

  • 1Description

The ES-71II Lens Hood from Canon is compatible with the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens and features a black felt interior lining to absorb light and therefore reduce unwanted light reaching the lens. Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Canon ES-71 II reviews

ES-71 II Lens Hood is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 260.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Must have! When shooting video/stills on Canon DSLR's 'Lens flare' is often a problem. And to eliminate this you will need some sort of Lens hood or a mattebox. A mattebox will give you more control specially if it has side flags. However I have a full professional mattebox for my DSLR rig and to be honest I have maybe used only a hand full of times. Majority of time I tend to use the 'Lens hoods' for my rig. The beauty of shooting high quality video on DSLR is the compactness and the light weight. I find that by using the 'ES-71II Lens Hood' with my 50mm lens I can get great results and still be light as a feather opposed to a heavy, chunky mattebox.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great addition I've only used this a few times, but I've already noticed a difference with the lens hood on in reducing lens flare. The best thing so far about the lens hood addition is that it makes my lens feel more sturdy. I feel like the front end is better protected now - I previously had to send in my lens for repair because the focusing ring was broken and have heard a lens hood can help protect the lens better. I feel relief now when it's off my camera and in my camera bag as well as when it's hanging on my side. And as always the service was excellent with B&H Photo. It was my first time with an in-store purchase and it was nothing short of magical.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not Necessarily the Best Hood Available I buy and use lens hoods for every lens whenever possible, and I'm big believer in them. I purchased this for my Canon 50mm EF f/1.4. I'm not thrilled with the fit. It's fine when used as a shade, but you can also reverse it and use it as a protective cover for the lens barrel. In the reversed position, I find it very difficult to attach. I have not had a problem reverse-attaching other Canon hoods. Also it's made of plastic and it's not quite as rigid as I would like. Considering the price, it seems like this hood could be better. If I had to do it over, I'd consider a less-expensive non-Canon hood, just to see if the reverse fit were better.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Feels cheap I bought this to put on the 50mm 1.4. I am not sure if it is lense or the hood, but it seems difficult to screw this onto the lens. There are no aligning marks on this hood (all my other hoods have one), even though I don't need to use them on my other lenses. But still, the lack of marks is kind of like it isn't quite sure how it should be put on either. All my other Canon lenses and hoods snap when in position, but this one feels like I am rotating it through a puddle of mud.I'd still recommend the product if you need a hood, although it seems to me like a generic, non Canon product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product, worth the price The lens hood fits my 50mm 1.4 perfectly and for the price I'm glad. It never leaves my lens and has protected the front element and any filters more than once. Solid and light construction and felt lined. Reversible for storage but I find I like it in the normal position as it does a great job of protecting the focusing elements and any filters. I wish there was a flower options but the tube design works great. Significantly cut down any unwanted flare and doesn't get in the way of my flash. And there's just enough room to adjust a filter with the hood on. Plus it just make the 50mm 1.4 look that much cooler!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay Lens Hood The build quality of this hood is alright, but certainly not superior as are the hoods for L series lenses. The plastic is flimsier than the L series hoods, and can be easily squeezed between my fingers. In addition, while the hood uses the same twist-on mechanism of the L series hoods, it doesn't twist on as easily as the higher end ones do. Putting it on reversed is actually pretty difficult to do compared to L series hoods. In my opinion, I feel that it is pretty overpriced for what you get, but the extra protection you gain for the lens is worth it anyway.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Must have. This is a must have if you plan to shoot outdoors, as the 50mm 1.4 USM is prone to lens flare which will wash out your images. The hood fits nicely, although I was a little disapointed that it didn't feel as strong as other lens hoods I have, it's a little wobbly feeling. So far it hasn't been a problem and I don't think it will break. It's a very small hood compared to something you'd throw on a 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM II. If you shoot outdoors, it's worth the buy. If you're shooting indoors mostly without a flash, skip it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 50mm Lens Hood Necessity Have used this 50mm for months without a hood, and what a difference a little light shielding can do. It not only protects my lens, but it provides shading from unwanted rays of light coming from behind or while directed towards the sun.
