Nice Addition To Your Travel Kit

I purchased a used copy of this lens from B&H to go along with my S5/20-60mm kit. The result is a very nice, portable travel kit that is both affordable as well as capable of creating very good images. The 70-300mm is light and compact. The build is very good. The optics are good and consistent with the better lenses in this price category. The camera and lenses fit conveniently in a bag. Perfect for a walk at home or abroad. There is a review above that ditzes this lens because reviewer felt the lens, while not bad, did not compare favorably with his Leica lenses. Such a comparison is silly and reflects an absence of understanding by the reviewer about what this lens is about. This is a good lens that is fun to use and fairly priced.

It all depends on your needs/expectations

This is a well made, light easy to use lens. As a longtime Leica user (30+ years), I have become use to what I can produce from various Leica systems. Some Panasonic lenses I have, do match in image quality my various Leica lenses. In the case of this lens, it does not. That does not mean that it is a poor lens, it just does not match my expectations given the Leica lenses (in this case the Leica R 180mm and 280mm APO lenses) I have. Yes, it is very compact and light, but for me, the image quality is just not there.

    Quality and Utility +

Those considering this lens have to make a concession of weight for brightness. This lens is lighter and cheaper than a comparable 2.8. And, it has an 11 blade aperture which makes for great bokeh. How does it perform? I've only shot a couple of hundred shot with it so far but I find the results really outstanding. It controls flare well and has wonderful bokeh. For shots outside it's awesome. For indoors you're going to need some light. The lens is a quality product and feels solid but not as heavy as expected. I recommend this lens to those who are shooting outdoors - for my landscape comrades, it's great. Dan

Pre Ordered in April - Worth the Wait

I preordered this lens on April 8th and it finally arrived on July 16th and IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT! PROS: Super Fast Focus on my S5 Nice weight and size, feels like it was made for the S5 Solid construction even though not a Pro Series Lens OIS with Body IS gives an incredible use of a shutter speed that is 5.5 f-stops Beautiful bokeh over the entire zoom range It really is a Macro lens, not 1:1 but VERY close, Amazing! Overall Color capture is excellent Convenient Switches for Focus Limit, Zoom Lock, O.I.S and AF/MF switch with a nice feature of an raised dot to let you know where that is without having to remove my eye from the viewfinder when I want to change to Manual Focus Weather Sealed Panasonic hit a HOME Run with this lens Oh and Preordering got me the Instant $250.00 savings but even at the current price it is well worth it and I would buy it. Cons: Really nothing, some would say the f4.5 but a larger aperture would just bring more bulk, weight and cost and with the Dual IS and 5.5 stops for me f4.5-5.6 is not an issue! The attached photos are just some quick shots after I took it out of the box, nothing fancy but you will see just how diverse this gem is. Straight from the camera except the Gold Finch which was cropped file size reduced by 10%.

    Great Value!

This lens pairs perfectly with the S5, the IS helps a lot while shooting hand held at the 300mm range. This lens is Sharp, produces great Bokeh, it is nothing like other zoom lenses I have use in the past at this price point. B&H did a great job keeping me updated with the shipping progress.

Gave my CL an effective 450mm lens

I bought this for my CL for landscapes and architecture. I do not know if it has enough range for birding, but it is relatively light and compact for my purposes. Easy to handhold with outstanding image stabilization. The image stabilization will use up the CL battery quickly so have a spare ready. I use it with the shutter on electronic to avoid shutter slap. With modern cameras having the ability to shoot higher ISO, the aperture is wide enough. I had tested this versus the Sigma 100-400 and found this the better lens on a CL by far for me.

This is a great lens for the Leica SL2!

This lens is great on the SL2! Quite a bit smaller than the Sigma 100-400 which is also great IMHO! But for every day carry in a smallish ONA Rochester bag this is great! Very happy with image quality too! As a macro, it's also good, and give a pretty long working distance. Check out the photo.

    Excellent results!

Feels great in the hand. Nice tight zoom (though I preferred the zoom worked in the opposite direction (but that's just a personal preference). Love the results I get. Excellent, lower cost, alternative to a Leica with an extra bump in the zoom department!
