Cinematic Capture in a Compact, Streamlined Form
With a compact design for solo shooters, for travel applications, and to serve as an ideal B cam, the Sony FX3 borrows from both the Cinema Line and Alpha series of cameras to create an optimized portable cinema camera. The FX3 features all the imaging attributes you'd expect from this class but sports a new lightweight, handheld form with a streamlined profile and a "cage-free" design offering the ability to secure various accessories directly to the camera body.
Firmware Update v.2.0
With firmware update 2.0, Sony aligns the FX3 more closely with its Cinema Line workflow. Updates include advanced log shooting choices, including Cine EI options, the ability to import user LUTs, timecode syncing via an optional cable, and an easier-to-operate camera interface.

When updating from v.1.01 or earlier:

  • Note your chosen settings before updating since the process will initialize the camera and will be unable to read saved settings from v.1.01
  • S-Log2 will no longer be included; you must use S-Log3
  • Connecting to the Imaging Edge Mobile app has been made easier (see Smartphone Registration in the Help Guide); this requires updating the Mobile app to v. 7.7 or later and registering the camera as new.
  • Note that the NFC one-touch connection function will no longer be available
Expressive UHD 4K Video Capture
The FX3's 12.1MP Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor (10.2MP effective in video mode) is paired with a BIONZ XR processor to achieve UHD 4K video capture with internal 10-bit 4:2:2 sampling or 16-bit raw output. The sensor's BSI design heightens clarity and sensitivity, with an expandable ISO 80-409,600 range and greater-than 15-stop dynamic range for working in mixed lighting conditions. Benefitting color and tonal control, the S-Cinetone mode can be used for matching to VENICE, FX9, or FX6 sources, and there is also S-Log3/2 gamut support and 10-bit HLG for simple HDR productions. The sensor and processor also work together to greatly reduce rolling shutter, and the sensor's design incorporates a Fast Hybrid AF system for intelligent and quick focusing performance and subject tracking.
4K Full-Frame CMOS Exmor R Sensor
A 12.1MP Exmor R sensor and BIONZ XR processor offer the FX3 true cinematic expression with 10.2MP effective video and 12.1MP stills capture. The full-frame sensor provides shallow depth of field looks, impressive bokeh, and reduced rolling shutter artifacts. A base sensitivity of 80-102,400 expands to a lofty 409,600 for impressive low-light capture, and 15+ stops of dynamic range reproduce the nuances of both spectacular exteriors and carefully lit interior scenes with plenty of allowance for color grading.
S-Cinetone Color
Beautiful skin tone reproduction and a softer-toned look that complements your VENICE, FX9, or FX6 footage are created using the FX3's default S-Cinetone color setting. S-Log-3, S-Gamut3, S-Gamut3.Cine, and 10-bit 4:2:2 support help maintain rich gradation and color matching with the range of Sony Cinema Line cameras, while HLG HDR provides the option of direct HLG playback without the need for grading.
Video Recording
Capture sharp, detailed images at rates up to 4K 120p with up to 5x slow motion at 24p output. Recording options include the ability to output DCI 4K+ in 16-bit raw over HDMI to compatible recorders while simultaneously recording XAVC 4K and proxies in-camera. Internal 4K recording options include 4:2:2 10-bit color with All-Intra and Long GOP codecs.

  • Cooling features like a silent fan and a heatsink dissipate warmth to enable uninterrupted recording up to 4K60
  • Dual SD card slots accept both CFexpress Type A and SDXC cards for easy relay or backup recording
  • Super35 1080p capture at rates up to 240p
Steady Focus
  • Now even solo shooters can keep the action in focus thanks to real-time Tracking and Eye autofocus functions made possible by AI-based algorithms plus a simple touchscreen focus function.
  • Seven choices of AF Transition Speed let you rack focus, and five AF Subject Shift settings enable you to adjust the speed when shifting from a locked-on subject.
  • Fast Hybrid AF uses 627 points to cover approximately 89% of the image frame
Ergonomic Form for Solo Operation
The FX3's cage-free design enables you to mount ¼"-20 compatible accessories directly on the camera or on the detachable handle, saving you the weight and setup/breakdown time of a camera cage. The clustered record button, focus and menu controls, and six assignable buttons all help to enable single-handed control, leaving your left hand free for balancing or controlling your lens.
Easily Viewable Tally Lights
Top, front, and rear tally indicators let the operator, talent, and sound person know precisely when the camera is recording, enabling accurately timed movements and dialogue delivery.
Quality Audio Options
Pro audio recording options include:

  • A detachable XLR adapter handle with two XLR-1/4" TRS combo audio inputs
  • A mic holder and a 3.5mm input for adding a microphone
  • Up to 4-channel, 24-bit audio recording
Remote Control, Streaming, and Transfers
Control your FX3 remotely using the Imaging Edge Mobile or Imaging Edge Desktop apps, and transfer files using Wi-Fi or via a wired USB Type-C connector to let your editor get a jump on post-production. You can also stream your content using your computer and the Imaging Edge Webcam app.
Post-Production Stabilization with E-Mount Lenses
  • Sony's Catalyst Prepare/Browse software uses shake metadata to stabilize your image
  • An adjustable balance between shake compensation and image area trimming lets you fine-tune the image
Improved FX3 Features
The FX3 updates the Cinema Line with improvements like comfortable, cage-free handheld operation, a battery runtime 1.6x longer than that of the a7S II, and a USB-PD power option for extended shooting times.

Sony FX3 Reviews

Don't upgrade firmware!

I finally went to update the firmware on this camera, now when the bluetooth is on it crashes the camera and the Wi-Fi doesn't work. I followed all the instructions properly too. I called Sony and they said because it's out of warranty and I have to pay to ship and fix it. I guess they can brick anyones cameras and not have to worry about it.

Best all around bang for your buck portable cinema camera

I've had this camera since it's inception and it's worked flawlessly since. Weddings, corporate, you name it! There are cameras with slightly better specs or 5% better color science, but if you want what you need as a video producer in this day and age, for a sub $4000 price point this has got to be at the top of your list. Just a joy to use every time.

Compromised clips and not built to last

I have had two issues where clips were lost. This is a huge issue. I can also tell you that your filp out screen will come loose and your headphone/mic jack will come loose as well.

Powerhouse!

I recently upgraded from the A7siii to my first cinema camera with the FX3. I wasn't expecting the learning curve to be that steep, but I was surprised by the number of differences between the FX3 and the A7siii. I really enjoy the menu being video focused, the addition of recoding indicators all over the camera, and the ability to mount additional peripherals all over the camera is a nice feature. I didn't realize how much I would miss an EVF. I'm looking at getting an Atomos ninja v+ to better monitor what I'm filming. I'm also still getting used to where the record buttons are located. Also, I'm still learning the ins and outs of filming solely in S-LOG3. If you are looking to get a cinema camera, then the FX3 is a great choice. It doesn't feel overwhelming and the form factor is familiar enough that I am more confident with learning some new features.

Superb Workhorse Camera

I solo produce a 3-cam video every week in addition to varied other freelance work. For years I used a trio of A7SII's but the limited battery life and 4:2:0 8-bit video eventually got to me. I initially bought just one FX3 but after just one gig, went back to trade in for another. With two FX3's and one A7IV, I can fit three cameras with lenses, my full audio setup (mics + recorder + cables), external monitors, and all necessary batteries in a SINGLE backpack. It is also remarkably light, letting me bring heavier lenses to bear (Cosina-Voigtlander APO-Lanthars). This is an incredible boost for solo videographers, trekkers, and urbanites who need minimal bulk and weight while retaining high quality. I was absolutely not prepared for how much of a leap the touchscreen GUI would take towards actually modern. The home screen is genuinely usable and useful, and this is the first time I've actually felt compelled to use touch to access or modify functions on a Sony camera. There's more work to do for future models, but it's progress! The buttons covering the rest of the camera are also very useful and easy to remap (except the zoom toggle, which is annoyingly easy to accidentally rotate if you're used to older Sony mirrorless cameras). My lenses are full-manual so I remapped aperture dial to color temperature, for example. The grip is excellent, very similar to A7IV. Pivoting screen is controversial, but I much prefer it, because you can rotate the screen inside-out to protect it when transporting. There are so many other quality of life improvements that I can't even mention them. I chose the FX3 over A7SIII because of the smaller size, lighter weight, cooling fan, and the more ergonomic video-centric controls. The mic preamp arm isn't all that useful (doesn't fit typical 20cm studio SDC mics!) and I feel like Sony included it just to justify the higher price vs. SIII, but thankfully it's easy enough to just leave it in the box. I think it's also valuable to compare the FX3 with the A7IV, as the A7IV trades one stop of noise performance for the ability to crop to Super35 4K, very useful for primes users. If you are not sensitive to noise and don't need the smallest size possible, the A7IV is much more economical while providing 90% of the quality and only a mild reduction in quality of life. I did several real-world tests, and found with standard settings, no mic handle, a full manual lens, and Fan on 'Low', I was able to get just under 2h30m of 4K24 4:2:2 10-bit (S-Cinetone) continuous recording, exactly identical to the A7IV. Even with the mic handle and a condenser mic drawing 3mA of P48, I still managed 2h15m, very impressive. This is a massive improvement over the A7SII's mediocre ~70 minute battery life, and will genuinely last an entire 2-hour concert with plenty of safety time to spare. Even the A7C (3h battery life) makes more sense than A7SII's now. You can also compare the FX6. Instead of IBIS, you get built-in variable ND and a bunch of exterior physical controls. If you're more comfortable with the traditional cine cam or camcorder style or have no space/bulk concerns, that may be more appropriate for you. Personally, I can't wait for the day you have to attach FF cine cams to lenses instead of the other way around. S-Cinetone color to my eyes is much improved over Cine & Pro color profiles. Finally yellows fall into place easily and correctly, and the tint seems much more natural out of the box. I was almost upset with how fast I was able to grade compared to usual. If you need a wider dynamic range, it is easy to pair S-Cinetone color with the older Cine1-4 gamuts and get great results. I don't shoot Log, but the 10-bit recording or up-to 16-bit output should help considerably with that. Overall this is an incredible camera and I regret not upgrading sooner. Sony seems to have actually listened to users and introduced sweeping ergonomic and QOL improvements compared to earlier models. Clients genuinely and regularly notice the improved quality and I genuinely notice the improved everything else. These cameras are not for beginners, however, and I honestly recommend a full read of the online user manual to start to understand the insanely deep (sometimes frustratingly so) feature set. Unusually, with the higher bit depth RAW output (yay full-sized HDMI!) and USB-C power/transfer, these cameras promise to have an unusually long service life; there's a very good chance I'll still be using these even 10 years from now! Attached is a comparison in size/shape of A7C, A7IV, and FX3. CV 21, 110, and 65 lenses. While the FX3 is larger and deeper than A7C, it is still smaller than the A7IV when considering the viewfinder, but otherwise a similar depth and width.

It's MADE for movie making!

There are so many things I love about this camera, it's just hard to list them all but I'll list my top ones. 1) The sensor is just awesome. If you have ever shot with the FX6, then it's a perfect match. And the SLog is amazing. 2) Build quality is superb: It's rugged, compact, smooth, yet also sturdy ... and I almost feel I could run over it with a car and it would keep going (I'd never do that, obvi). 3) Modular: I love the 1/4-20 screw mounts on the body. You can fasten a cage into it or add other accessories to your heart's delight. 4) Built for CINEMA. If you shoot video, then I feel there is no other option. I used to shoot with the Sony a7sIII but this is just far superior. It's MADE for cinema. It's not a hybrid photo/video (though it takes great photos). It is made for moving making and that's what I love about it!

Love it

Is there any way to get AF Assist to work with third-party lenses? currently this feature only seems to work with native Sony lenses.
Asked by: Simon
Through a conversation with a Tamron Rep I found out that this is something Sony will need to grant permission on before the third party lens makers can implement a software fix.

I have this camera and I'm having issues with the audio recording when taking audio from a mixing board (live events) to the XLR handle. The audio does a micro drop/pop/click when the intensity of the sound gets too high. I noticed it happens when there's a lot of low end sound. Has anyone else had this problem?
Asked by: lorenzo
Check the settings that you are using on the Sony FX3 top handle. Make sure that you have the input signal setting on "Line" since you are sending a line level signal from the mixer into the camera. Set the input level switch on "Manual" which will allow you to use the dial to adjust the audio level manually. If it's set on Auto then the camera automatically adjusts the audio level, which might be how it's set now based on your description of the problem. The attenuation switch (ATT) can be used to reduce the input level if the signal is too strong and causing distortion. Start on "0 dB" and if it's too loud, then try "-10 dB" next, and if that's still too loud, go down to "-20 dB". I hope this information is helpful. If you are still experiencing problems with the audio levels, please feel free to contact us by phone or through live chat on the website and we can help you to do additional troubleshooting.

some user reviews complain, despite the internal fan, the fx3 overheats after 45 minutes of recording. would using an external 98wh battery like the core swx neo mini (bh #: CONEO9S2FC ) and a dummy battery, mounted on a cage, make overheating a non issue?
Asked by: Kevin
From our experience in the superstore, the Sony FX3 is not very prone to overheating like many other cinema cameras, and relegating power input to an external battery helps tremendously. That being said, truthfully, it's impossible for us to test every variable and cannot completely rule out overheating even if the Sony FX3 is powered via D-tap.
