Designed so you can rein in the stampede of data from hi-res 4K cameras, such as a RED cinema camera, and slash time off your post-production workflow, the 6big 48TB 6-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array from LaCie offers up to 48TB of storage split over six hot-swappable 8TB 3.5" IronWolf Pro NAS hard drives, each of which utilizes one of the array's SATA III 6 Gb/s drive bays. Each drive is equipped with a cache of 128MB and a rotational speed of 7200 rpm, both of which help to ensure uninterrupted data transfers. The array itself is equipped with two 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 ports and one 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 port, each of which use USB Type-C connectivity. For those whose system does not have a USB Type-C port, the 6big is compatible with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 via an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter cable.

The 6big supports a variety of hardware-controlled RAID modes, including RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, and 60, each of which offers speed, data redundancy, or a combination of both. Using Thunderbolt 3, RAID 0 supports read and write speeds of up to 1400 MB/s, while a RAID 5 configuration supports read speeds up to 1200 MB/s and write speeds up to 1150 MB/s. When using a USB 3.1 connection, RAID 0 read and write speeds can go as high as 400 MB/s, while a RAID 5 configuration yields read and write speeds as high as 350 MB/s. Please bear in mind that actual data rates may vary depending on operating environment and other factors. Also, please be aware that RAID 0 does not support hot-swapping.

The 6big 48TB 6-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array operates using a 100-240V 250W power supply at 50/60 Hz, can be used in 24x7 operating environments, and supports storage expansion via daisy-chaining. The array also supports one 5K display or, via daisy-chaining, dual 4K displays. Its processing and display power will allow users to edit multiple streams of ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes 444 XQ, and uncompressed 10/12-bit HD video. Included with this RAID array is a power cable, a Thunderbolt 3 cable, a USB 3.1 Type-C cable, and a USB Type-C to USB Type-A cable. Protection is provided by a limited 3-year warranty.

General Features
Thunderbolt 3
Fast I/O
For the 6big, LaCie harnessed the performance potential of the Thunderbolt 3 I/O and its fast data transfer rates. They added a hardware RAID controller and 7200 rpm drives, resulting in read speeds of up to 1400 MB/s in RAID 0 and 1200 MB/s in RAID 5.
For Lightning-Fast Video Workflows
Thunderbolt 3 can slash time off nearly every task in a post-production workflow. Ingest hours of raw footage from a Blackmagic Cinema Camera into Adobe Premiere Pro and edit multiple streams of ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes 444 XQ, and uncompressed 10-bit and 12-bit HD video. For big projects packed with high-def clips, thumbnail and preview rendering becomes much more responsive
For Your Smartest Workspace
With double the video bandwidth of its predecessor, Thunderbolt 3 lets you daisy-chain dual 4K displays or a single 5K display to the LaCie 6big. With two 4K displays, you can spread out your workspace by dedicating one display to your timeline and the other to previewing 4K footage. It's even possible to power a compatible laptop through the Thunderbolt 3 connection, which delivers up to 15W.
Compatible with Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2
It's possible to connect the 6big to devices with previous generations of Thunderbolt. Just use a Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapter (sold separately), provided your Mac is running macOS Sierra 10.12 or later. Thunderbolt will deliver speeds of up to 10 Gb/s, while Thunderbolt 2 will deliver up to 20 Gb/s.
Capacity
Consolidate
Instead of buying a new storage device every time you need more capacity, invest up front in a future-proof, RAID-protected solution. Improve data access and security, which can save money in the long term.
Organize
Divide your storage into multiple volumes according to your workflow. Create one safe volume for backing up source media, another for ingesting transcoded clips and current projects, and another for archiving final footage.
Expand
Thunderbolt 3 lets you daisy chain up to six devices to a computer via a single cable so you can connect up to six LaCie 6big arrays together for storage expansion.
Enterprise-Class Drives
Enterprise-Class Drives
The LaCie 6big uses IronWolf Pro drives that are designed for multi-drive environments with a wide range of capacities. IronWolf Pro drives also feature RAID optimization, improved power management, and workloads of up to 300TB per year.
Peace of Mind
IronWolf Pro drives are covered with a 3-year limited warranty that includes Rescue Data Recovery Services. If something goes wrong, your drive will be replaced and your data recovered with one in-lab data recovery service at no additional cost.
No Downtime
If your system fails, simply make a claim and you'll have a replacement unit within a few days, with 25 days to return the failed unit.
RAID & Monitoring
Hardware RAID Modes
RAID 0 provides the fastest data speeds with no redundancy, while RAID 5 and RAID 6 provide speed and data redundancy. RAID 5 can sustain one drive failure without any data loss, while RAID 6 can sustain two simultaneous drive failures with no data loss.
LaCie RAID Manager
With Powerful features and a user-friendly setup, LaCie's RAID Manager gives you an intuitive interface to administer the LaCie 6big.
Design
Compact Footprint
Get massive capacity on your desktop in a footprint that's smaller than an iPad Air.
Front-Accessible Drives
Conveniently and quickly remove and replace drives from the front of the product. Keep track of drive health and RAID build status with the front-facing drive status LEDs.

LaCie External HDD Reviews

LaCie 6Big failed within one week.

Switched drive from RAID 5 to RAID 6. Added a partition and started initialization. One of the drives failed during initialization. Customer support was/is lacking. Talked with two persons. Both were unfamiliar with the unit and spent time looking up solutions. Ultimately, got another unit. Just discovered it is a rebuilt unit from 2020 (looked at log). Definitely will demand a NEW replacement unit. Or, send everything back and get my money. Who needs the hassle?

Fast and Easy setup for any RAID configuration

I needed a Direct-Attached RAID 6 storage solution with lots of space and this LaCie with Seagate Ironwolf drives fit the bill. I was really impressed with the ease of getting it configured with the included RAID management software that allows any RAID configuration - including multiple RAID configurations across the 6 drives. You can also use 5 drives for your RAID and let the 6th drive serve as a spare that automatically kicks in if one of the other drives begins to fail. I'm using it for massive video storage and editing and the Thunderbolt speed is fantastic for that - no more dropped frames even with multiple streams. I'm very satisfied with this array.

Great Upgrade Form Old Tech

Have had multiple LaCie drives over the years. Only one of 7 had any hardware issues and probably my fault on a 1 TB rugged that got dropped. Everything else has been rock solid and I move 2x's a year between Yellowstone job and home, so l give them a lot of transport. Just got the 60TB raid 6big. Researched for quite a while. I use apple MacBook Pro so LaCie has been my go to external hard drive solution. Setup was straight forward, take the time to read the detailed owners manuals for drive and RAID configuration. Pretty straight forward. I changed from RAID 5 to RAID 6. Had to call support at one point to determine when and how to erase/initialize disks using native iOS, necessary when going to RAID 6. Have been moving 18TB of data over last week. All going smooth. Make sure you research and understand what cables etc to use. I have decided to move forward doing data first, MacBook 2nd then monitors if forced to. Using old external drives as deep backup drives behind RAID array. Biggest issue was determine port connectivity and compatibility. Do your home work. Not an issue regarding LaCie, but you need to understand your upgrade path/strategy.

Solved a lot of storage problems

It's not cheap, but it strikes a great balance between, speed, capacity, and security. With RAID 5, I'm getting 650MB/s read and write speeds and 20GB of protected storage. I have another USB hard drive daisy chained to this, no issues there. Moving and editing large video files is slick. Feels like everything is on a fast SSD. No issues so far setting up and using with Windows. Had to return a OWC RAID drive because of compatibility issues. This setup was easy. I'm only a month in, and have not had a drive failure yet, so I can't speak to the process of repairing/rebuilding the RAID. It's pretty quiet when sitting still, but makes plenty of noise when it's working. I actually drilled a hole through my wall, and installed it on a shelf on the other side of the wall (which happens to be a closet) to keep the noise down.

Perfect, if a bit large.

No noise issue for me. Works great. Fast. WD has earned a bunch of hate here and LaCie always come through.

You state in your specs. that it will support RAID 60... But you only have 6 drives? Support Raid 50 makes sense with 3 drives per RAID 5 1 drive is for backup. Raid 6 uses 2 drives for backup so 60 would need at least 4 drives time 2 = 8 drives. How do you support the RAID 60?
Asked by: David W
The RAID 60 support is only on the 12big and not the 6big. You are correct that it requires 8 drives minimum.

Are swappable drives (spare drives) available to purchase?
Asked by: Jerrod
No, not any SATA drive can be swapped. Seagate/LaCie test and certify a handful of SATA drives that will work properly with the 6Big/12Big. You will need to go to LaCie's support page for the HDD compatibility list.
