Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S Overview

The Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S Lens with UV Filter Kit from B&H bundles the fast, normal-length prime lens with a 82mm multicoated UV filter to absorb ultraviolet light and protect the front of the lens.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S Lens

Built for speed and exacting sharpness, Nikon's NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S is a fast, normal-length prime featuring advanced optics and a bright design to suit everything from available-light portraiture to selective-focus documentary subjects. The f/1.2 maximum aperture excels in difficult lighting conditions and offers impressive control over depth of field to help isolate subject matter against a blurred background. A series of extra-low dispersion and aspherical elements also help to achieve high sharpness, notable clarity, and accurate rendering while ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats, as well as a Super Integrated Coating, suppress flare, ghosting, and surface reflections for improved contrast and color fidelity.

Complementing the optical design, a multi-focus system, which employs two stepping motors, helps to realize impressively fast, accurate, and quiet focus performance, along with full-time manual focus override, to suit both stills and video needs. The lens also has a unique physical design, which incorporates a top OLED information panel that can be used to quickly confirm aperture and focus settings, and an assignable L.Fn button permits making exposure and settings adjustments via the lens. Additionally, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Bright normal-length prime is designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras, but can also be used with DX models where it provides a 75mm equivalent focal length.
Impressively bright f/1.2 maximum aperture excels in low lighting conditions and also offers extensive control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
Three aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
Two extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color rendering.
ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats are used to prevent ghosting, reflections, and flare in order to realize improved contrast and clarity when working in strong lighting and backlit conditions. The Nano Crystal Coat controls incidental light from a diagonal direction while the ARNEO Coat controls incidental light from a vertical direction. A Super Integrated Coating is also featured on multiple elements to help ensure consistently accurate colors.
Multi-focus system incorporates two separate AF drive units, which are synchronized, to deliver especially fast and accurate focusing performance. This system uses stepping motors, which offer impressively smooth and quiet autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
Integrated OLED lens information panel allows you to quickly confirm aperture setting, focus distance, and depth of field figures right on the lens in both bright and dark situations.
Assignable L.Fn button works in conjunction with camera-based Fn buttons to provide a seamless point for quickly changing exposure settings and other functions.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.

Chiaro Pro 82mm 98-UVATS UV Filter

The Pro 82mm 98-UVATS UV Filter is one of Chiaro’s highest-rated protective UV filters with 98% light transmission. It’s ideal for photographers of all levels who demand high-quality glass and other essential features for excellent image fidelity and construction.

To achieve 98% light transmission, Chiaro uses highly-polished optical glass, multi-coating, and additional advanced elements that improve the filter’s light transmission. A scratch-resistant coating minimizes scratching of the glass and helps assure that water, oil, dust, and fingerprints are removed with a gentle wipe. Its hard-anodized aluminum filter ring is designed to screw on and off effortlessly, and it is thin to prevent vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses. Side knurling helps assure that you’ll have a firm grip when attaching or removing your filter.

Image quality is what matters most at Chiaro. The company has tested and combined many features and essentials to achieve superior image quality and the highest light transmission. To help take the confusion out of selecting a filter, Chiaro prominently displays the light transmission levels so that you can choose the perfect filter for your lens and photo session.

98% Light Transmission
Protecting your lens doesn't mean you have to lose optical quality. By using highly-polished optical glass and advanced coatings, Chiaro offers a 98% transmission rate, which is an excellent transmission rate for glass. And the company verifies the ratings with ISO certified lab testing.
Resistance Coating
The layers of advanced resistance coating on the filter are designed to resist moderate scratches, and allow you to easily clean your filter. Water beads up and rolls off your filter, and oil and fingerprints can come off with a gentle wipe. Dust and debris won't adhere to the filter and can be removed with a puff of air.
Polished Optical Glass
Glass that's polished to perfection is essential to achieve a high level of light transmission. The optical glass in this Chiaro filter is highly-polished for flatness that ensures excellent optical clarity.
Multi-Coating
Multi-coating enhances light transmission to the demanding level set for all Chiaro filters. It reduces unwanted internal reflections and ghosting that can compromise your images.
UV Protection
The filter blocks UV light and reduces the bluish cast of daylight that can affect color accuracy, especially at higher altitudes.
Hard Anodized Aluminum Construction
The process of hard anodizing toughens and strengthens the aluminum for a lightweight yet durable filter ring.
Slim Design
Measuring only 3.2mm, this filter is slim enough to use on wide-angle lenses without experiencing vignetting.
Top and Side Knurling
In addition to top knurling, Chiaro added side knurling to better grip the filter when you're attaching and removing it, or when you're stacking filters.
Secure Attachment
It takes two full turns to mount the filter on your lens. This feature will securely hold your Chiaro filter through the most demanding photo shoots.
Front Threads
The front threads on the filter allow you to stack filters by screwing them onto your Chiaro filter.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S Reviews

Stunning.

I did a ton of research before purchasing this lens. Starting with the obvious, it is a big and heavy lens. It feels too big on my Z6II, but feels well balanced on my Z9. I like this lens a lot. I got it specifically for portraits and street photography, but I am finding I like it a lot for any subject I put in front of it. Not a usual application, but I shot a cityscape from the 21st floor of a building and absolutely everything was sharp. When shot at closer range at f/1.2 it melts the backgrounds and creates lovely separation for my subjects. It is a success on all counts and I highly recommend it (despite the weight, size, and cost).

Extremely Sharp

I love this lens! It is sharp, fast and just beautiful. My only really complaint is that it is a large. I had a 50 1.2 GM and it was much smaller but that's my only complaint.

Quite a Beast

I anticipated the size and weight of this lens prior to receiving it, so it didn't come as any surprise how hefty it is. The optics are incredible, however, even wide open. Coming from a 58mm f/1.4 (quite a special lens unto itself, but not that sharp wide open) I was floored by the contrast and resolution of this f/1.2. I don't plan to use it as a general walk-around lens, but more for studio and night work. Balances very well on the Nikon Z9, but I could foresee the size and weight being somewhat of an issue for non-gripped cameras. If you're accustomed to gear that tips toward the heavier end of the spectrum and you're looking for the absolute best, look no further.

WOW! What a lens.

Amazingly sharp with great bokeh, this lens is hefty, but for me easy to hand-hold, especially with the camera's image stabilization. I took a few pictures at 1/15 second and was surprised by the quality of sharpness. This lens allows great available light photos with only the quality that gives shadow and highlight detail unprecedented. I expected softness at f1.2, but that did not show up. The price may be hefty, but the quality (as expected from Nikon) far exceeded my expectations. Can strongly recommend this lens for your Z camera.

Absolute Beast of a lens.

This lens is great for portraits. Wide open at f1.2 the bokeh is unbelievable.

Vale cada centavo

Obviamente que uma lente com toda essa construo, esse peso maior e com muito mais elementos que a verso 1.8 no pode ser a mesma coisa. A lente maravilhosa e te permite baixar sensivelmente o ISO. Vale cada centavo.

One Tack Sharp Piece Of Glass

Took it for a small test run with the Nikon Z9. The Nikon Z 50mm f/1.2 is one fantastic piece of glass that obliterates the background, making your subject stand out. I have included a few images I took with this fine piece of glass. Images captured wide open and stopped down to f2. The Z9 AF and this lens where made for each other. Given that the model was always fidgety the Z9 and the Z50mm did fantastic in the AF department. In the shot with the trees, I focused on the cut tree.

Superb...worth the price and size premium?

Compared to the 50 1.8 S, sharpness difference is negligible. However, the rendering is better and focus is definitely faster and more reliable. The best part of the lens is how it handles complicated lighting situations like shooting into a setting sun. This is where this lens comes into it's own. The bokeh is much better. Being a 1.2 gives some interesting options too. It is a superb lens...but at x3 the price and size/weight of the 50mm 1.8...

The programmable control ring on the Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S Lens needs to be set from the camera itself. In the custom control settings of the camera you can set the function of the control ring.
