Leica APO-Summicron-M 90mm f/2 ASPH. Overview

Characterized by its apochromatic designation, the APO-Summicron-M 90mm f/2 ASPH. from Leica is a fast short telephoto lens designed for M-mount rangefinder cameras. As an apochromat, this lens utilizes a pair of anomalous partial dispersion glass elements to virtually eliminate color fringing and chromatic aberrations for notable clarity and color accuracy. Its manual focus design permits working with subjects as close as 3.3' away and its compact design also incorporates a built-in extendable lens hood to shield the front element.

Apochromatic design employs two anomalous partial dispersion glass elements to virtually eliminate chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy throughout the aperture range.
In addition to the apochromatic designation, this lens also uses one aspherical element and two high refractive index elements to significantly reduce distortion and spherical aberrations while also increasing overall sharpness and edge-to-edge illumination.
Bright f/2 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also affords greater control over depth of field.
Manual focus design provides a minimum focusing distance of 3.3' with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:9.
Built-in extendable lens hood shades and protects the front element to reduce lens flare and ghosting. Additionally, the front of the lens is threaded to accept 55mm screw-in filters.

Leica APO-Summicron-M 90mm f/2 ASPH. Reviews

A must have for portrait and landscape photography

I primarily shoot street photography with a Q or an M10 + 28 mm or 21 mm which produce images packed with energy and feeling. The 35 mm and 50 mm lengths don't do that for me. However, the 90 mm AA does with its incredible sharpness and magical bokeh. For portraits and landscapes, this lens inspires my creativity and enables me to create memorable images. You may think that you need to shoot this lens wide open, but the narrow depth of field at f/2 can be a challenge to focus if you have middle aged eyes. Getting the right diopter correction for the M helps as does gently rocking forward and backward until the image pops in the viewfinder. The best advice, however, is to shoot at f/4, which still produces class-leading bokeh yet has the just the right depth of field to render the subject with sharpness and separation from the background.

Great lens, but get the magnifier.

The lens is great, but almost impossible to use unless you buy the magnifier for the viewfinder. With a rangefinder camera, you're not looking through the lens when you focus. This lens is the next to longest you can use. That means that the area of coverage in the unmagnified viewfinder is pretty small. So be advised. You'll get great shots, but be prepared to shell out for another accessory.

THIS HAS TO BE THE BEST AND THE SHARPEST 50mm LENSE IN THE W

THE LEICA LENSE DESIGNER HAD WANTED FOR A LONG TIME TO DESIGN A REALLY FABULOUS 50mm LENSE, BUT LEICA KNEW IT WOULD BE HAND MADE AND VERY EXPENSIVE. LEICA SAID NO ONE WOULD PAY THAT MUCH FOR A 50 mm LENSE. MANY YEARS PASSED AND FINALLY LEICA ALLOWED THE DESIGNER TO CONTINUE. I HAVE ONE AND I SHOOT ALMOST EVERY THING WITH IT. I LOVE IT AND IF I DIDN'T HAVE IT I WOULD BE LOST UNTIL I COULD GET ANOTHER ONE JUST LIKE IT.

I WOULD SURE ADVISE ANYONE TO BUY ONE OF THESE.

FABULOUS LENS. EXTREMELY SHARP AND THE COLORS ARE JUST BEAUTIFUL THAT I HAVE SEEN FROM IT SO FAR. I LIKE THE FACT THAT IT IS NOT NEARLY AS HEAVY AS MY EARLIER LEICA 90MM LENS.

Leica 90 in Havana

I finally returned to Havana to conduct a workshop for a few aspiring professional photographers. I took the 90 Summicron along to see how I managed my Leica set-up and the weight the system management I'll have when I'm working. I took a few portraits with the 90 and I liked the very much, since lately I seem to be focusing on head-shots. The lens was a dream to use, and not too much of a weight burden. Overall, the lens is truly great! Though most who are used to auto focus will complain about some difficulty focusing this lens, but that is the Leica experience, to return to when the photographers' skills are more important that the equipment. For me, the craft of being a professional photographer is making my idea of the image paramount in the experience of shooting.

Exceeded expectation

I happened to have both the APO Summicron f2 90mm and 50 mm. I know the strong reviews for the APO 50 mm but in side by side comparisons, the APO 90 mm surprised me with similar resolution, color saturation, contrast, and greater Intimacy because of its closer range. From this experience I don't think of the 90 mm as strictly a portrait lens anymore. My older Leica 90 mm Summicron did not give me this versatility. I feel this APO 90 added a lot to the Leica lens lineup. I'm surprised it received relatively little attention.

Closer, Not Bigger

The 90 is a great focal length for bringing the world closer. As with all Leica lenses this is a beauty to hold and use. It is so well made and everything clicks and turns like it should. The image quality is, what can I say, the sharpest!

Amazing lens..

I love this lens. I have the 50mm f1.4 and the Tri-elmar 16-18-21. This nicely complements those two. I am mostly shooting with the M10P. It is the best portrait lens I have shot with. The bokeh is very pleasing and almost no chromatic aberration that makes pictures look tack sharp.  I used to use the Sony A7R3 with the 85mm f1.4 for my portraits before. Now I use this most of the time.

The 55mm filter ring inside my lens broke in a fall. It appears to be a small ring that threads into the lens barrel and also serves as a stop to prevent the integrated hood from sliding off. WHERE can I purchase this replacement part?!
Asked by: Jonathan
You are correct about the ring. It has inside and outside threads on the same ring (it's an adapter). If you don't have a local camera shop that deals in Leica kit then I would contact the Leica service center. There is a replacement part number for it. Look in the booklet that came with the lens if I remember correctly. Even without the part number they will be able to look it up.

Dose this lens block the viewfinder of M10R?

Dose this lens block the viewfinder of M10R?
Asked by: Greg
Yes, this lens would obstruct the viewfinder a bit. Does it obstruct the frame lines? Less so. This can be a difficult question to answer because different people will have a different definition of how much viewfinder blockage is acceptable. The Leica Visoflex is always a good consideration when using lenses like these. B&H # LEVSB, Leica cat # 18767.
