Viltrox 50mm f/1.8 Overview

The 50mm f/1.8 Lens for Sony E-Mount from Viltrox is a full-frame format lens with a versatile normal field of view suitable for a broad range of applications, from portraiture to reportage, and the fast f/1.8 design excels in low-light conditions and for shallow depth of field. The optical design incorporates one extra-low dispersion, two high transparent, and two aspheric elements to suppress a variety of aberrations and distortion, and an HD Nano multilayer coating has also been applied to reduce flare and ghosting for greater contrast in bright and backlit conditions.

Complementing the optics, the lens's design also incorporates an STM stepping motor that affords fast, near silent, and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design also contributes to quick performance. Additionally, the lens features an integrated micro-USB port for making future firmware updates to the lens.

Prime normal-length lens designed for full-frame format. When used on APS-C cameras, it has the equivalent perspective of a 75mm lens.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture suits working in low-light conditions and also affords greater control over depth of field.
11 elements in 10 groups
One extra-low dispersion elements and two high transparency elements reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve a high degree of clarity and color accuracy.
Two aspheric elements help to control spherical aberrations and reduce distortion in order to realize high sharpness and accurate rendering.
HD Nano multilayer coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
STM stepping motor enables quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. The internal focusing design maintains the overall lens length during use for improved handling and quicker response.
Integrated manual aperture ring for tactile exposure control; this ring also features an 'A' position for automated, camera-based aperture selection.
Integrated micro-USB port for firmware updates.

Good lens with this price

Severe autofocus issues and strong purple fringing

I really wanted to like this lens. It's built well and is really sharp even at 1.8 but the autofocus renders it pretty much unusable. If your subject isn't in perfect lighting it will hunt like crazy and never lock on. It almost never gets an eye AF lock on my A7iii unless the lighting is perfectly even across the face. The photos it does get in focus though are great and tack sharp. It also has pretty severe purple fringing but that is auto corrected in camera so you don't really even see it once you import. It's really funny to see a thick purple halo around everything in the camera preview though. If this lens autofocused well it would be a budget dream. It does have a USB port so hopefully the firmware gets updated soon but I'm going to have to return it because I can't wait around for that with a lens I can't trust on a shoot.

Sharp, full frame, lightweight AF lens on Sony!

I was looking for an alternate option to the Sony G-Master 50mm - something that wouldn't break the bank. My requirements were that it needed to be at least f1.8, needed to be full frame, needed autofocus, and wanted something smaller and lightweight compared to the G-master. I tried a variety of options and settled on the Viltrox - I'm glad I gave it a chance, since many review have been harsh, I almost didn't. The lens AF works well even in low light on my Sony a7S III. I was expecting it to hunt a lot more but it was fairly solid. Not G-Master level but certainly usable on professional shoots. It's sharp, sharper than I was expecting. I ended up liking it so much I also bought the Viltrox 24mm. Both together were still half the price of one G-master lens. I'm going to invest in some more CFexpress A memory cards with the money I saved. Woohoo! If you'd like to see samples I shot - check out Film Jams on YouTube.

Do the Sony and Nikon versions have the same good autofocus?
