Impressive Speed and Sharpness
Combining speed, versatility, and quality, the Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM is a normal-length prime that flexes a bright f/1.2 design and advanced optics while remaining portable and lightweight for everyday shooting. As a G Master lens, resolution and bokeh are top priorities, and this 50mm f/1.2 goes on to also include a sophisticated focusing system to suit both stills and video needs and a reliable physical design that's intuitive to use and durable enough for working in harsh environments.
G Master Resolution and Bokeh
G Master lenses prioritize sharpness and bokeh quality by featuring advanced optical designs and specialized elements.
  • Three XA (extreme aspherical) elements effectively control astigmatism, field curvature, coma, distortion, and other spherical aberrations for a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering.
  • Nano AR Coating II has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions. This updated coating is better suited for larger, curved elements and is especially adept at minimizing internal reflections.
  • Floating focus mechanism helps to ensure optimum and consistent sharpness throughout the focusing range.
Exceptional Speed and Versatility
  • Normal 50mm focal length suits a variety of subjects and shooting applications, ranging from portraiture and street shooting to landscapes, lifestyle, and architectural subjects.
  • Truly impressive f/1.2 maximum aperture yields extremely shallow depth of field results for separating subjects from busy backgrounds using selective focus.
  • Beyond depth of field control, the f/1.2 design also benefits shooting handheld and working with faster shutter speeds in low-light conditions.
  • Rounded 11-blade diaphragm helps produce a smooth and circular bokeh quality.
Fast and Precise AF
Four XD Linear Motors provide quick, quiet, and precise autofocus and subject tracking performance. This design also contributes to more natural, intuitive Linear Response manual focus control and an AF/MF switch is located on the lens barrel for tactile control over this setting.
  • XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors deliver high thrust to efficiently move larger, heavier elements and focus groups, such as those needed to produce an f/1.2 lens. This focusing system also achieves accurate focus when working with extremely shallow depth fo field effects.
  • Internal focusing design offers more responsive focusing performance and maintains a consistent overall lens length during operation.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 1.3' suits making dynamic close-up images.
  • A close minimum focusing distance, maximum magnification of 0.17x, and bright f/1.2 aperture help create shallow depth of field imagery with a strong close-up subject and a soft background.
Compact and Durable Design
  • Despite the wide f/1.2 maximum aperture, complex optical design, and inclusion of a high-performance AF system, this lens manages to still be relatively compact and lightweight for everyday handheld use, measuring 3.4 x 4.4" and weighing 1.7 lb.
  • Two focus hold buttons are featured on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
  • Physical aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications.
  • Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
  • Fluorine-coated front element resists dust, moisture, and fingerprints and is easy to clean.

Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM Reviews

Best Prime Lens I Have Ever Used

I purchased this as a HUGE upgrade from the nifty 50. I have always been impressed with the build quality of the GM lenses - and Sony brand lenses in general. While I wasn't sure if I would really need the f/1.2 aperture, I am glad I got it. With the new f/1.4 out, it would really be a tough choice but if you need that creamy bokeh or want to get good courtside pics with a super-fast lens, you can't go wrong.

Lens met expectation performance wise, but have clanking noise ubless focused. Apparently is normal, but does not instill confidence.

The Sony 50mm 1.2 lens is a high-quality piece of photography equipment that is well-suited for a variety of shooting scenarios. The lens boasts a fast 1.2 maximum aperture, which allows for excellent low-light performance and beautiful bokeh. The autofocus is quick and accurate, making it easy to capture sharp images. Incredible Glass, Well Worth the Price

Sharpest, fastest, most accurate 50mm lens I have ever used from any brand. You can use this lens at any aperture and get sharp results that will not disappoint. I was gob smacked as they say, about how sharp and clean it is at 1.2 across the frame. The most critical reviews I saw about this lens in my view show how good the lens is. Those critiques were that it was far too perfect in image quality and that the lens doesn't change character when you stop down, meaning that the only real benefit you are going to see is increasing the depth of field when you stop down. So if you prefer the various looks (AKA obvious defects wide open that lessen on stopping down) of other 1.2 lenses like the Canon 50mm f1.2L EF, don't buy this. My most critical issues with the lens are the focus breathing and cat's eye bokeh that goes away around by f2.5. However, every other 1.2 50mm I have seen better in these regards is either way larger and heavier, doesn't have auto focus or the AF is not nearly is fast/accurate, or the IQ isn't as good. So its basically a trade off here. I would say that unless there is some revolutionary change in lens design that happens soon, you will enjoy this lens for a very long time without the need to upgrade when a version 2 or even version 3 come about.

Amazingly sharp, fast focusing, silent, great size/weight and very sturdy build quality. Distortion and vignetting is basically nil and CA is at a minimal as well. This lens quickly became my Go to for in the studio and street photography. For tighter shots, the detail is almost mind blowing!

Optical Perfection

This lens is ridiculously big and heavy, but it's the best fast 50mm e mount lens available. The depth of field at f/1.2 is razor thin. It's amazing really, and you need to experience it for yourself.

Is there any filter that is compatible with this lens hood? I bought the Tiffen 72mm Variable Neutral Density Filter, but I can't put the lens hood on when I apply the filter.
Asked by: Xincheng
Most filters will be compatible with the lens hood on this lens, but not a variable ND filter, which is necessarily thicker than most filters.

One of the reviewers said the reviewer: actual focal length was a bit wider, around 48mm, is this true?
Asked by: edwin
While generally considered a non-issue for photographers, the focus breathing of this lens results in a slight change in the focal length depending on the distance of the subject upon which one is focusing. As such, the average is around 50mm, but that does vary very slightly according to the distance at which the subject is located. The advantage of this system is that it allows the lens not to need to extend at all in order to focus; The optical changes necessary for focusing occur entirely internally. The result is faster focusing with less vibration, better weather resistance, and a more consistent balance.

How does this lens compare to the 50mm f1.4 Planar T ?
Asked by: Marlon
The 1.4 is an excellent lens but shows its age when it comes to the precision of the glass machining. The bokeh will have a bit more onion skinning and the chromatic aberration is more pronounced. Also auto focus on the new 1.2 is way faster and more precise. Hope that helps! Well worth the extra $500 IMO

Is the manual focus linear? If I turn the camera off/on do I have to refocus? (two different questions)
Asked by: Brian
The manual focus on the Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM uses an electronic fly-by-wire manual focusing system driven by Sony's Quad XD linear motor. From my tests in the store, when the lens is left in manual, after turning the camera off and on, the position of the lens focal plane in manual is not altered or changed.
