Sony FE 24mm f/2.8 G Overview

A classic wide-angle prime, the FE 24mm f/2.8 G Lens from Sony is characterized by its speed and ultra-compact form factor. The versatile focal length suits shooting everything from street to landscape and documentary subjects, and it features an advanced optical design for well-corrected imagery with a high degree of sharpness and clarity. The 2.7 x 1.8" form factor makes it effortless to have handy at any time.

The lens design includes an extra-low dispersion and aspherical elements to reduce a variety of aberrations, color fringing, and distortion. The optics are complemented by a coating that also suppresses flare and ghosting for improved contrast. Balancing the optics is an XD Linear Motor system that uses two separate focusing motors to deliver especially quiet, precise, and quick autofocus performance. The lens also sports a dust- and moisture-sealed design to support shooting in inclement conditions.

Designed to achieve notably high resolution and sharpness through the correction of a wide variety of spherical and chromatic aberrations, this lens features a robust and intuitive-to-handle physical design to benefit both photography and cine applications.
Wide-angle 24mm lens is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras; however, it can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 36mm equivalent focal length.
Aspherical elements are incorporated into the optical design and feature superior surface precision for effective control over astigmatism, field curvature, coma, distortion, and other spherical aberrations for a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering.
Extra-low dispersion element is featured in the lens design and helps to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
Two XD Linear Motors, along with an internal focusing design, provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance. This design also contributes to more natural, intuitive Linear Response manual focus control and an AF/MF switch is located on the lens barrel for tactile control over this setting.
A focus hold button is featured on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
Physical aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications.
Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
Fluorine-coated front element is easy to clean and resists dust, moisture, and fingerprints.
Rounded 7-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Sony FE 24mm f/2.8 G Reviews

Great little lens

The lens is very small and makes the camera very portable. Great ergonomics too, feels very well built. The image quality is not superb, but that is to be expected of a small pocketable lens.

My Favorite Street Photography Lens

I thought 24mm would be too wide but after shooting over 1000 photos with this I'm in love with the focal length. It's so tiny and well built. I love the aperture ring and auto focus is blazing fast and silent. I had the 1.4 gmaster before but returned it for this because this one was sharper (I think I got a bad copy of the 1.4). It's a great lens and if you get close enough at 2.8 you can still blow the background out if that's your thing.

Like the other prime G lenses in this series, this lens has excellent an build - all metal body, basic weather sealing, nice deep ribbing on the aperture and focus dials, and the added bonus of a focus hold/multi function button. And the image quality is also excellent in the center and mid-frame, and very good in the corners. Right now this 24, the 40mm 2.5 G (or 50mm) and 85mm 1.8 make an excellent three lens kit. Hopefully Sony will continue the success of this series and put out a 85mm G to match.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have been very pleased with my new Sony lens. The autofocus is quick and smooth. Pictures are crisp and sharp. The size of the lens is also good. It is nice and compact and fits in my bag with my other equipment. I also like the feature of being able to easily switch between manual and auto focus modes with ease. I would highly recommend this lens to anyone looking to upgrade from their own standard lenses to this prime lens.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is my first, non G-Master lens from Sony. I was thrilled to try out the lens and was pleasantly surprised by the amazing picture quality from such a small lens! It is the perfect lens for capturing images on the go. A must have for anyone who is traveling or likes to carry around a versatile lightweight setup. I now reach for this setup over my iPhone!

Glass a pro can be proud of

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] A great mid-range lens is what Sony has come out with in the 24mm G series. This is not only a good midrange for quality but also for the price. Without going into the technical details let me explain my experience in a simple way. I have used the basic kit lens along with some APC lens in order to find a more compact solution to a full frame camera. The 24mm G series is the best one by far. When you use an inferior lens you restrict the quality and drop the capability. I feel like I have not sacrificed anything with this lens other than spending more money and even that I did not have to do. The thing that most do not talk about is the quality of the glass in a lens. Here you have a great quality and if they are not talking about it then you might want to look elsewhere if you look at other products. I have sharp images all around. If you read the tech reviews the bottom line is for a lens like this you are getting a great value, I have to agree. You get the best of most worlds. Clear image, low distortion around the edges and a compact factor that is great for landscapes and street photography. What I really love about this lens is that it is compact, full of features that you can really apply even as a novice. The compatibility of a great lens with great glass is what really stands out on this form factor. I hope that Sony continues to provide this amazing line up and adds in a broader line up. Grab it if you want to experience top notch performance as a beginner or hobbyist with out paying professional prices. Attached are several photos that show from afar and what a closeup will provide.

excellent quality camera

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have always loved taking pictures but i always settled for cheap cameras because it was just a hobby and I did not think it was worth the investment to dish out so much money for something i may lose interest in, but i finally decided to take the plunge for a new Sony lens and I am so glad I did. This made the pictures I took so crisp and high quality and I wish I had made the commitment earlier. It is so lightweight and I love that it has settings built right into it for easy access. My favorite feature other than the portability was that it focused on the object i was taking a picture of so fast, almost instantly. If i had to pick anything bad it would be that i did have a slightly harder time doing that when it was not as bright. I received this product at a discounted price in exchange for my honest opinion.

How much do you have to rotate the focus ring ...

How much do you have to rotate the focus ring from closest focusing distance to infinity?
Asked by: Ben
The Sony FE 24mm f/2.8 G Lens (B&H# SO2428G) has a "focus by wire" electronic (and not mechanical) connection between the focus ring and the motorized focus mechanism. The distance that you will need to turn the focus ring will depend on the speed at which you turn the focus ring. The faster you turn it, the less you'll need to spin the focus ring. A twist of about 180 degrees will generally be able to get you to the focus position you want. It could be more if you are twisting the focus ring slowly, however. If you prefer a linear response then will want to switch the focus to manual (as opposed to autofocus) and then the focus pulls will be linear.
