Wide-Normal Portable Prime

A comfortable focal length with an especially portable design, the Sony FE 40mm f/2.5 G is a versatile prime; an ideal single focal length option for a broad variety of situations. This lens's smart build and sophisticated G Series optics mix with intuitive handling and the sleek form factor to make it a go-to option for anything from street to landscape to travel applications.

Matched Set of Compact Primes

Together with the FE 24mm f/2.8 and 50mm f/2.5 G lenses, these three lenses form a cohesive trio with similar styling, image quality, and ergonomics:
  • All lenses prioritize a compact profile with an emphasis on intuitive handling; each features a manual aperture ring along with other tactile controls.
  • The three lenses share the same 49mm filter ring diameter.
  • Matched aluminum finish with stylish focal length and aperture engravings, both aperture and focusing rings, and matching metal lens hoods.

G Lens Series

  • Three aspherical elements promote more uniform sharpness across the frame by suppressing spherical aberrations and distortions.
  • Rounded 7-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Focus Control for Stills and Video

  • Two linear motors deliver quick and accurate autofocus performance, along with capable subject tracking for working with fast-moving subjects. This AF system is also especially quiet to suit its use for cine applications.
  • Internal focusing design limits the overall length of the lens for faster, more responsive focusing.
  • Linear Response manual focus control offers more natural handling and an AF/MF switch is located on the lens barrel for tactile control over this setting.
  • Customizable focus hold buttons are present on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
  • Impressive close-up performance for working with close-up subjects; this lens has a minimum focusing distance of 9.8" with MF (11" with AF), which results in a 0.23x maximum magnification.

Sleek-but-Robust Design

  • Physical aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications.
  • Lens measures 1.8" and weighs 6.1 oz, making it a great portable choice that's well-suited to both full-frame and APS-C bodies.
  • Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions.
  • Fluorine-coated front element is easy to clean and resists dust, moisture, and fingerprints.

Sony FE 40mm f/2.5 G Reviews

Terrific weight, size, quality

Really, it is sharp. Mostly I'm using it at f5.6 to 11 but landscapes and interior view at 2.5 were excellent. Color is fine. Focus hold works. Yeah, I wish it had been cheaper, but it will allow me to travel almost comfortably with my Sony A7R3 around my neck rather than my lovely lightweight Fuji XE2. Attached photos are all jpegs processed and sharpened in LrC. I highly recommend it based on quality alone. Its low weight is a major benefit and the low profile makes it even more mobile. I only shoot stills, so I can't comment on video.

Great balance of size and quality

This has rapidly become my default lens, and then I'll switch to a different lens if the situation calls for it. Image quality has been great, autofocus has been great. The only real complaint I have with this lens is that sometimes I want more bokeh, but it really has plenty for most situations. If you need maximum bokeh, you're probably going to be using a noticeably heavier lens. In addition to the typical uses, I think the extra field of view from the 40mm lens (compared to the 50mm f/2.5) is perfect if you plan to occasionally use your camera for video conferencing with it mounted to the back of your desk.

Needed a walk-around lens

This lens really fits a need. I use mostly primes, including a Batis 25/2 which I love. I am excited to bring this back out when the weather gets nicer. I wish it was a bit wider like 35. It is sharp and solid

It's a lot better than I expected

Bought this for its mini size. Since I already invested in 24, 35 & 50 GM + a 55 Zeiss. so I selected this 40mm to use on A7C as a backup (I would pick 35 if this is my primary lens). The lens is in perfect balance with A7C, the fast and quite focusing is great shooting on street. The image is crispy and bright. 40mm doesn't feel too different from 50 for some reason and I can switch to APSC mode to shoot portrait for better reach. The only thing I don't like is that funny looking cap, so I bought a Hoage bayonet cap, not a screw on but made for this lens, now I have a really handsome package. Highly recommend this lens, but not as alternative to GM.

What a lens

This is such a natural focal length. It's a great go-everywhere kit with the A7C - particularly if you like M mode shooting. The build is excellent like the other lenses in this series, and the optical performance is really excellent, and that extends corner to corner when stopped down only a bit.

Awesome lens for when size matters

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Build Quality: The SEL40F25G is an objectively well-built lens. The body is made out of aluminum and feels nice in the hand. The aperture ring clicks into place nicely and the focus ring is buttery smooth. For the size, it’s well put together, premium feeling lens. Performance: The SEL40F25G is a very quick lens. The autofocus is quick and works very quietly. Bokeh is nice and creamy as well. I do wish it were a bit faster, but understand that some compromises need to be made to make the lens as compact as it is. Compared to some of the Zeiss Batis primes and GM zooms I have, I do still prefer the images coming out of those lenses, but they also cost considerably more. Size: I got an a7c for the days where my a9 + GM lenses are just too heavy to lug around. The SEL40F25G is a perfect complement for the a7c. It’s a smidge taller than the a7c’s kit lens and much shorter than my 50 f/1.8. This keeps everything nice and compact while still capturing shots with excellent quality. Overall, the SEL40F25G is a great lens. There are similar lenses that are faster, smaller, or cheaper, but the SEL40F25G strikes a nice balance between build quality, speed, and size that is hard to match in the market. So why not 5 stars? It comes down to price. I understand that there is a lot of engineering that goes into making something this good and this small, but it's a pricey proposition. *Disclaimer: I received this product at a discounted price in exchange for my honest opinion

Amazingly light and sharp little lens! great for walk around or small outings where you don't want to bring a chunky lens.

Perfect mate for Any a7C

This is a surprisingly good lens, considering its small size and weight. I like the imagery, color, and contrast. It focuses fast and accurately, is well-built, and has useful buttons, switches. I also like the aperture ring with a click/de-click button (!) plus the AF/MF switch, as well. It pairs perfectly with the a7C, creating a very light, versatile, easy to carry around kit. I have a feeling it will also find it's way onto my A7IV.
