Sony FE 50mm f/2.5 G Overview

A classic normal focal length prime lens, the FE 50mm f/2.5 G Lens from Sony is characterized by its ultra-compact form factor. The versatile focal length suits shooting everything from street, portraiture, and documentary subjects, and it features an advanced optical design for well-corrected imagery with a high degree of sharpness and clarity. Additionally, the ultra-compact 2.7 x 1.8" form factor makes it effortless to have handy at any time.

The lens design includes an extra-low dispersion and aspherical elements to reduce a variety of aberrations, color fringing, and distortion. The optics are complemented by multicoating that also suppresses flare and ghosting for improved contrast. Balancing the optics is an XD Linear Motor system that uses two separate focusing motors to deliver especially quiet, precise, and quick autofocus performance. The lens also sports a dust- and moisture-sealed design to support shooting in inclement conditions.

Designed to achieve notably high resolution and sharpness through the correction of a wide variety of spherical and chromatic aberrations, this lens features a robust and intuitive-to-handle physical design to benefit both photography and cine applications.
This 50mm lens is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras; however, it can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 75mm equivalent focal length.
Aspherical elements are incorporated into the optical design and feature superior surface precision for effective control over astigmatism, field curvature, coma, distortion, and other spherical aberrations for a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering.
Extra-low dispersion element is featured in the lens design and helps to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
Two XD Linear Motors, along with an internal focusing design, provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance. This design also contributes to more natural, intuitive Linear Response manual focus control and an AF/MF switch is located on the lens barrel for tactile control over this setting.
A focus hold button is featured on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
Physical aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications.
Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
Rounded 7-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Sony FE 50mm f/2.5 G Reviews

Sharp and Lightweight

Comparing the Sony G 50mm f/2.5 lens to my collection of 50mm lenses, I found it to be unique by exceeding them in sharpness while at the same time weighing less than most. This is achieved by keeping the aperture modest and taking advantage of the latest in lens technology for mirrorless cameras. So this is the lens to take out on a long hike or journey. But it also excels in most other situations, even interior shots or twilight scenes (see the attached photos, taken hand-held at f/5.6 with my A7III). For lots of bokeh I go with longer focal lengths, though. The lens has one little quirk when used with a polarization filter. My standard 49mm CPL filter is too thick to fit behind/inside Sony's unusual hood. When mounted in front, it becomes fully exposed to the elements. It also captures a wide swath of direct sunlight, which scatters at the polarizing plastic foil. To have better protection for the filter, I bought the 49mm Sensei PRO Aluminum hood from B&H. It fits on top of the filter without vignetting.

Sony G Series Nails the "Nifty Fifty" Category

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Sharp. Colorful. Accurate. Ultra-compact. Incredible depth of field. What else can be said about the 50mm F2.5 that you can't tell immediately after attaching to your alpha series camera body and taking it out for a couple of shots. This thing is amazing. I've been using an 85mm f1.4 prime gmaster lens as my primary, and it's been a bit of a pain. It weighed a ton, and needed F2.2 or higher to get a crisp image. With this 50mm, I have the most perfect on-the-go versatile prime lens I could want, and it's taking photos that rival that of the far more expensive gmaster. I think that with a little more time and practice, this lens will be my new favorite go-to for all purpose prime lens photography.

Excellent for video with its balance of features & price

I use this lens on the Sony a7III for filming interviews and for gimbal work that is mildly telephoto. I'm content with the bokeh that I get at f/2.5 and am happy to make the trade-off from lenses that have higher maximum apertures, but are significantly larger and heavier. It's so tiny and light that I will always have it in my bag or pocket, regardless of how light I'm wanting to work. I appreciate its iris ring for its ability to make smooth adjustments while filming live video. Highly recommended, as long as maximum bokeh isn't your top priority. For that I'd go with the Sony 50mm f/1.2. However, I just don't want to carry it around.

Full frame sharp in the palm of your hand

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I'll admit it I love Sony cameras and lenses; what's not to love when they keep giving us lenses like this one. My first Sony camera was an entry-level A-mount and I've been on the bandwagon ever since. Initially, it was all about speed and frames per second, then it became about a different kind of speed, portability, that's when I bought my first mirrorless aps-c, an A6000. Earlier this year Sony gave us the A7C, a full-frame camera in an aps-c body. I've taken several trips with it and love it dearly for its small footprint, but the size of my lenses often ruins how portable it could be. Then this 50mm F2.5 comes along and changes my life. I've got ultimate portability with a fast, sharp, and light lens that can fit in any bag. If you're looking for a sharp, portable, portrait-worthy travel lens, this is definitely it. I'll continue to add sample pictures I have taken with it. Disclaimer: I purchased this lens at a discounted price in exchange for my honest opinion.

The size won me over.

I use this lens on the A7III. I bought this lens because of the size. It's such a small light lens. The reason I went with this and not the cheaper 50mm 1.8 was because I used the cheaper canon 50mm 1.8 and I really disliked that lens for the chromatic aberrations . So I didn't even want to try the Sony 50mm 1.8. I don't mind paying more for a lens that's better optically. The reason I didn't purchase the 50mm 1.2 GM lens is because of the size. I wanted a small lens that was good and so far this has been a good choice for me. My example photos do have some lightroom post processing to them so it's not straight out of camera examples but examples regardless. I would recommend this lens if you want small. The bokeh is fine at 2.5 I don't regret not having a 1.8 or 1.2.
