Normal-Length Portable Prime

A classic focal length with an especially compact profile, the Sony FE 50mm f/2.5 G is an inherently versatile prime lens capable of handling subjects ranging from portraiture to street to landscapes. This G Series lens is characterized by a notably stylish build and sophisticated optics, making it a go-to single-lens choice for everyday walk-around shooting.

Matched Set of Compact Primes

Together with the FE 24mm f/2.8 and 40mm f/2.5 G lenses, these three lenses form a cohesive trio with similar styling, image quality, and ergonomics:
  • All lenses prioritize a compact profile with an emphasis on intuitive handling; each features a manual aperture ring along with other tactile controls.
  • The three lenses share the same 49mm filter ring diameter.
  • Matched aluminum finish with stylish focal length and aperture engravings, both aperture and focusing rings, and matching metal lens hoods.

G Lens Series

  • Two aspherical elements promote more uniform sharpness across the frame by suppressing spherical aberrations and distortions.
  • One extra-low dispersion glass element controls color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color fidelity.
  • Rounded 7-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Focus Control for Stills and Video

  • Two linear motors deliver quick and accurate autofocus performance, along with capable subject tracking for working with fast-moving subjects. This AF system is also especially quiet to suit its use for cine applications.
  • Internal focusing design limits the overall length of the lens for faster, more responsive focusing.
  • Linear Response manual focus control offers more natural handling and an AF/MF switch is located on the lens barrel for tactile control over this setting.
  • Customizable focus hold buttons are present on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
  • Impressive close-up performance for working with close-up subjects; this lens has a minimum focusing distance of 12.2" with MF (13.8" with AF), which results in a 0.21x maximum magnification.

Sleek-but-Robust Design

  • Physical aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications.
  • Lens measures 1.8" and weighs 6.2 oz, making it a great portable choice that's well-suited to both full-frame and APS-C bodies.
  • Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions.
  • Fluorine-coated front element is easy to clean and resists dust, moisture, and fingerprints.

Sony FE 50mm f/2.5 G Reviews

Great image quality in a small, well-built body

This is one of the best-handling lenses for the Sony FE system. The aperture control and focus ring are both nicely dampened, the AF/MF switch is conveniently located, and the Fn button gives yet another way to customize my A7IV. IQ is great, weight is low, just all around a nice little (if expensive) lens.

Excellent for video!

The Sony FE 50mm f/2.5 G Lens is perfect for video, especially with the de-clicked aperture ring.

Sharp and Lightweight

Comparing the Sony G 50mm f/2.5 lens to my collection of 50mm lenses, I found it to be unique by exceeding them in sharpness while at the same time weighing less than most. This is achieved by keeping the aperture modest and taking advantage of the latest in lens technology for mirrorless cameras. So this is the lens to take out on a long hike or journey. But it also excels in most other situations, even interior shots or twilight scenes (see the attached photos, taken hand-held at f/5.6 with my A7III). For lots of bokeh I go with longer focal lengths, though. The lens has one little quirk when used with a polarization filter. My standard 49mm CPL filter is too thick to fit behind/inside Sony's unusual hood. When mounted in front, it becomes fully exposed to the elements. It also captures a wide swath of direct sunlight, which scatters at the polarizing plastic foil. To have better protection for the filter, I bought the 49mm Sensei PRO Aluminum hood from B&H. It fits on top of the filter without vignetting.

The size won me over.

I use this lens on the A7III. I bought this lens because of the size. It's such a small light lens. The reason I went with this and not the cheaper 50mm 1.8 was because I used the cheaper canon 50mm 1.8 and I really disliked that lens for the chromatic aberrations . So I didn't even want to try the Sony 50mm 1.8. I don't mind paying more for a lens that's better optically. The reason I didn't purchase the 50mm 1.2 GM lens is because of the size. I wanted a small lens that was good and so far this has been a good choice for me. My example photos do have some lightroom post processing to them so it's not straight out of camera examples but examples regardless. I would recommend this lens if you want small. The bokeh is fine at 2.5 I don't regret not having a 1.8 or 1.2.
