Optoma Technology UHD38 Reviews

Was good until it died on me...

By Michael

I purchased this projector in August and it was amazing. Playing games at a full 240 frames a second and watching movies on it daily brought our home such delight! Sure, the color was a bit off, but for the gaming aspect of the projector, the price was extremely tough to beat. In May, it made a loud pop and refused to turn on. No status lights on the projector light up, completely dead. Called customer support and they told me to go to their website to fill out a RMA ticket so someone can help me. It's been about a month since I've filled the ticket out and I still have not gotten any callback for my ticket. They claim their systems went down and they are backed up and will get to me, but I don't buy it; over a month for someone to just call me?? I'll never purchase another Optoma product ever again due to the poor customer support.

Bright and crisp

I have been using the projector for 20 days and so far it's giving a good bright picture even in lights on setting. However when I viewing the snow storm scene the whites looked patchy even on a screen. But for the price it's a good and bright 4k projector.

Overall feelings and Optoma customer support

Great PJ for the $$. It's set too close to my screen, so the picture doesn't fill it. (Re-doing the room soon) To get as large a picture as I could, I zoomed as far as I could. With it set that way, I was having a convergence issue. At the bottom left hand side of the screen, the green wasn't quite aligned with the other colors. I contacted customer support. They wanted to know source, cables and screen info. I provided that. They came back with this: Try adjusting the focus, this is a result of how the projector functions. When the image is not in focus the light that makes up the image can be refracted and cause the color to show chromatic aberration, adjust the focus properly will minimize this effect but it is a part of how the technology works. Just re-focusing didn't work, so I went and set the zoom to the middle and then re-focused. Now it looks great. With that being said, it seems to me that it's pretty important to have your zoom set to the middle instead of an extreme, as this can happen. As far as their support goes, they were quick to respond and they were polite. I'd like the PJ to look great at extreme zoom, (And really, it mostly does.) but I also understand that colors can be distored by optics. If this were a more expensive PJ, then I'd expect it to be perfect. But at this price point, ($1400 at the time of writing this.) it's really quite amazing.

Truly Great Projector

I was surprised at just how good this projector is. I project a 6 x 10 foot picture, and the result is bright, with rich colors, and a sharp picture. The picture is nearly as good as my 75 inch Samsung 4K smart TV. It was easy to set up, and has plenty of tweaks.

So far I am very happy with this projector. The image is bright and crisp with very vivid colors. It is also really quiet. I have not tried the gaming setting yet but it has been great for watching movies.

Good upgrade from Optoma HD20

Installation was a breeze to replace from my prior ceiling mount HD20. Color calibration took a little time, although definitely operates a little better in daylight environments. It's also quieter which is a nice bonus. 4K content is stunning!

Slightly expensive

I think it is a bit overpriced but it looks good while still being plenty bright. Latency is low enough to play games, might not be great for competitive shooters. Works great for movies.
