Sigma EVF-11 Reviews

Meh

It does what is supposed to do but needing to use the slider switch to change between EVF and rear display is more cumbersome than I envisioned at time of purchase -- it makes me appreciate the auto-switching feature that most mirrorless cameras provide, which I previously took for granted. Also, the switch placement is awkward to reach when holding the camera normally. A few other buyer beware items are (1) you loose access to the HDMI port and (2) USB pass-through is for storage connection only and you can not longer recharge the camera via USB, and (3) diopter control requires eyecup removal. Build quality is good and if you really need an EVF then this gets the job done, and the tilt is a nice bonus. For the price point, however, Sigma could have ponied up for a higher-resolution display. This unit is very expensive for what you get IMO.

Mostly perfection, but three nuisances spoil the broth.

Yes, it is disappointing that at this price you don't get the high pixel count as the latest Sony or Canon EVFs. But when you put the EVF-11 to your eye, you'll forget all that. The image is bright and crisp. The isolation eyecup (the second one in the box) is very comfortable against your face. The Diopter (once you locate it) has a lot of range to suit most prescriptions. Also, because there are no other options, it's a better than nothing scenario. BECAUSE...as much as you'll love the Sigma at first peek, if you shoot with heavy manual lenses and wear glasses, it will also drive you nuts. The EVF tilt is sooooo hair trigger sensitive that it is almost impossible to have it creeping upwards 45-degrees when you reach to adjust focus. WHY Sigma did not put a lock switch on the tilt is beyond me. Or, at minimum, put detents so the tilt works in increments of 15-degrees. The second nuisance is that in order to adjust the Diopter, you have to pop off the eye cup. Considering that the cup is held on with two TINY plastic tabs, you will be counting the days till one or both of them break off. WHY Sigma hid the very-needed Diopter is beyond me. Sometimes I want to look through with the naked eye; other times with my glasses on; and what about when a colleague (or anyone else on the planet!) wants to look and none of them share your particular prescription? The last nuisance is one shared with the Sigma cable protector that came with the camera. The big thumbscrew auto-loosens through use. It was less a critical issue with the cable protector because there were no electrical connections, but with the EVF, as it loosens, it starts jutting at an angle. When you press the EVF to your face, you are exerting lateral force on both the USB and HDMI ports. Fortunately, I have mine in the Smallrig cage designed for this EVF so the lateral movement is somewhat restricted. But if I can offer advice, snug the thumbscrew every time you pick up the camera for the day.

Great improves the usefulness of the Sigma fp and fp l.

This is exactly the accessory that the Sigma fp cameras needed. This is a very nice evf that is particularly useful for the more photo-centric Sigma fp l. Highly recommended.
