FUJIFILM 18mm f/1.4 XF Overview

Continuing FUJIFILM's series of compact, portable primes, the XF 18mm f/1.4 R WR Lens is a 27mm-equivalent wide-angle lens that is well-suited to documentary, travel, landscape, nature, architectural photography, and even astrophotography. The optical design features three aspherical elements and one ED element to limit distortion and spherical aberration in order to produce optimal sharpness and accurate rendering. A Super EBC coating is also used to control flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in bright and backlit conditions. Complementing the optics is a linear autofocus motor, along with an internal focusing design, which provides quick and especially quiet focusing performance. The lens is weather sealed to suit working on location in inclement conditions and features an aperture ring with an "A" position lock for use in automated exposure control.

Prime wide-angle lens is designed for APS-C-format FUJIFILM X-mount mirrorless cameras and provides a 27mm equivalent to 35mm focal length.
Bright f/1.4 maximum aperture suits working in available light conditions while maintaining a compact form factor.
The optical design contains 15 elements in 9 groups, including three aspherical elements and one ED element to limit distortion and spherical aberration for optimal sharpness and accurate rendering.
Optical elements feature Super EBC coating to reduce lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity.
Linear autofocus motor provides fast and responsive, near-silent AF down to a minimum object distance of just 7.9" / 20cm in as little as 0.04 seconds. It also features an internal focusing design, and smooth manual focusing control.
The lens body incorporates weather sealing to protect against dust and moisture, and to enable worry-free use in inclement conditions and freezing temperatures as low as 14°F.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Everything I've Been Looking For

Having used the XF16mm f/1.4 and loving the overall performance for photo with its super sharp image quality and close focusing distance, I found it to be a bit too noisy when trying to use it for video with continuous af and an external mic attached so I ended up selling it. Enter the XF 18mm f/1.4 R LM WR. Having never used a Fujifilm lens with a linear motor, this thing is fast and accurate for photography and I find myself with same surprise I had with the 16mm when reviewing images after a session. Wide open, this lens is SHARP and more than anything I will probably ever need in terms of image quality. There is a bit of ghost/flaring but I actually like it and I pair the lens with either a Glimmerglass or a Pro-Mist filter and just have to be conscious of my light but overall not even close to being a deal breaker. In terms of video there is slight occasional hunting but the autofocus is fast and most importantly QUIET, it's not completely silent but in order to hear anything you really have to put your ear up to it. If I had to nitpick a point to complain about, the length of the lens is a little long when on my X-Pro3 but that's really it. Just buy it.

Great Fast Documentary Lens

Purchased this lens for daily family pictures and for vacations, and have been very pleased so far. Took it on a week-long family vacation recently to a theme park and it performed great. The field of view is perfect for taking environmental portraits of nearby family members, and also works great for general scenic shots. I used to use the Fuji 23mm f/2 for these sorts of trips, but found the field of view a bit too tight when trying to capture family members close by, and for selfies. The extra field of view this 18mm offers is just what I was looking for. The focus speed and accuracy were excellent on my X-T3, and had no trouble keeping up with my two young kids. The fast aperture enabled me to capture some great indoor shots on dimly lit theme park rides that I would not have otherwise been able to get. Paired with the X-T3, the total package weighed in right around 2lbs, which was really great for carrying around on long days. Sure, it's not as light weight as the 23/2, but the extra field of view it provides, along with being a stop faster and having superior IQ, make it worth it to me. As mentioned in so many other reviews, the sharpness and image quality are excellent. Highly recommend!

An Optically great lens

This lens is almost unbelievably sharp, even wide open and its ability to capture low light images hand held is fantastic. I have only had the lens in hand for about two weeks now but I am very impressed with the performance. I have heard others say they find it appreciably heavier than its f2 predecessor but mated with my XT4 or XS10 I really don't find it to be heavy at all. It is small enough that it is not at all uncomfortable on my XS10 and seems just right on the XT4. The only gripe is one that is echoed by many others and that would be the aperture ring seems to have been re-designed or somehow the tension on the ring made universally lighter so I do find myself occasionally bumping the aperture ring more often than I do with other Fuji lenses. This isn't a deal breaker though by any stretch. A very good lens. and for me, lighter than I have heard others complain about. Optically I think this is as good as it gets. Really nothing performance wise to complain about.

I was worried to get a new prime that hadn't been out for long and stood the test of time... However I'm amazed how great it is! I have found my new preferred focal length in going to the 18mm... It's just a little more than my 23mm and just what I was looking for!

Sharp, high quality optic

This lens is very sharp from f1.4 through to f16. It focuses very close allowing for some interesting differential focus effects at f1.4. Reviews about this lens are very very positive....overly effusive I'd say. The lens is excellent, although I'm not sure the perspective (27mm equivalent) is as useful as either a 16mm f1.4 or 23mm f1.4. These latter two are far more useful perspectives for landscapes/architecture and people respectively. Reviewers suggest 27/28mm is more useful for either - I'm not so sure about that. Also, I think the 16mm f1.4 has the same sharpness as the 18mm f1.4 with a far more useful perspective for landscapes. The best way to assess whether this is the right lens for you is to consider that most smart phones have a 27/28mm equivalent perspective - if you like the look of your phone pics, then this lens would be right for you. I'm hoping that this will also turn out to be a good astro lens. It's sharp and useable at f1.4, so might turn in some really good milky way images (I hope). Overall a great lens, but make sure the 27/28mm equivalent perspective suits your brand of photography as it isn't a cheap lens.

I love this 27mm equivalent lens for everyday walking around shooting. Very sharp and fast focusing. Balances nicely on either the XT-4 or the X-S10.

Why is the magnification shown .15x (less than that of .21 for the 16mm lens)?
Asked by: Larry
I was wondering if focal length which is usually converted to 35mm equivalent does not relate to magnification, what does? I realized that the focus distance would be another part. I found the answer by B&H incomplete so did a web search and indeed found: https://photographylife.com/what-is-magnification "Because magnification can be thought of (and even expressed mathematically) as a combination of focal length and focusing distance" Sensor size is also considered though not really part of magnification, nor the number of pixels . Guessing a what the mathematical formula I tried a ratio , and then the square of that which worked.

Will the 18mm 1.4 focus as fast on the XE 3 as it would on the XT 3 or XT 4?
Asked by: Roger
The Fujifilm Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only, Black) (B&H# FUXT3B) and the Fujifilm X-T4 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only, Black) (B&H# FUXT4B) are newer cameras than the Fujifilm X-E3 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only, Black) (B&H# FUXE3B) the former two offer slight autofocus enhancements relative to the less late-model X-E3. Of course, the X-E3 is no slouch and would not be at a significant disadvantage. Moreover, the FUJIFILM XF 18mm f/1.4 R LM WR Lens (B&H# FU1814) has been designed with a quick linear AF motor to keep up with fast-moving subjects regardless. As such, it will focus with good speed on all three cameras.
