FUJIFILM 18mm f/1.4 XF Overview

Continuing FUJIFILM's series of compact, portable primes, the XF 18mm f/1.4 R WR Lens is a 27mm-equivalent wide-angle lens that is well-suited to documentary, travel, landscape, nature, architectural photography, and even astrophotography. The optical design features three aspherical elements and one ED element to limit distortion and spherical aberration in order to produce optimal sharpness and accurate rendering. A Super EBC coating is also used to control flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in bright and backlit conditions. Complementing the optics is a linear autofocus motor, along with an internal focusing design, which provides quick and especially quiet focusing performance. The lens is weather sealed to suit working on location in inclement conditions and features an aperture ring with an "A" position lock for use in automated exposure control.

Prime wide-angle lens is designed for APS-C-format FUJIFILM X-mount mirrorless cameras and provides a 27mm equivalent to 35mm focal length.
Bright f/1.4 maximum aperture suits working in available light conditions while maintaining a compact form factor.
The optical design contains 15 elements in 9 groups, including three aspherical elements and one ED element to limit distortion and spherical aberration for optimal sharpness and accurate rendering.
Optical elements feature Super EBC coating to reduce lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity.
Linear autofocus motor provides fast and responsive, near-silent AF down to a minimum object distance of just 7.9" / 20cm in as little as 0.04 seconds. It also features an internal focusing design, and smooth manual focusing control.
The lens body incorporates weather sealing to protect against dust and moisture, and to enable worry-free use in inclement conditions and freezing temperatures as low as 14°F.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

FUJIFILM 18mm f/1.4 XF Reviews

Everything I've Been Looking For

Having used the XF16mm f/1.4 and loving the overall performance for photo with its super sharp image quality and close focusing distance, I found it to be a bit too noisy when trying to use it for video with continuous af and an external mic attached so I ended up selling it. Enter the XF 18mm f/1.4 R LM WR. Having never used a Fujifilm lens with a linear motor, this thing is fast and accurate for photography and I find myself with same surprise I had with the 16mm when reviewing images after a session. Wide open, this lens is SHARP and more than anything I will probably ever need in terms of image quality. There is a bit of ghost/flaring but I actually like it and I pair the lens with either a Glimmerglass or a Pro-Mist filter and just have to be conscious of my light but overall not even close to being a deal breaker. In terms of video there is slight occasional hunting but the autofocus is fast and most importantly QUIET, it's not completely silent but in order to hear anything you really have to put your ear up to it. If I had to nitpick a point to complain about, the length of the lens is a little long when on my X-Pro3 but that's really it. Just buy it.

Spectacular!

I was worried to get a new prime that hadn't been out for long and stood the test of time... However I'm amazed how great it is! I have found my new preferred focal length in going to the 18mm... It's just a little more than my 23mm and just what I was looking for!

This lens is a great addition to my Fuji line up of lenses. It is wide without being to wide and I love the pictures I get from it.

The new Mighty lens from Fuji

I have this lens since my travel to Barcelona in December, I used it for street, travel , landscape photography and some Christmas decoration. I used to have the 16 f1.4 for 3 years . This 18mm is stellar: -Exceptional sharpness between f2.8 and f11, very high sharpness at f1.4...I could take memorable photos in low light at f1.4 without regrets. -Colors rendering is pretty good, no tendency to shift blues to magenta like with the 16mm -Bokeh is very pleasant and even though you can go as close as the 16mm (15cm), the bokeh balls are larger and cleaner but you will get cats eyes in the corners -Sunstars are spectacular and very easy to get even at f5.6, no need to push up to f16 unless you like very long flares, I strongly recommend to use the Electronic shutter as mechanical will produce unwanted large flares -AF is pretty quick even in low light -I never had CA or purple fringing over my hundred of photos -There are more vignette than with the 16mm f1.4 with RAW but you can very easily get rid of them in LR or Capture One -18mm is very versatile, I only used this lens for street, travel and landscape , not too wide like the 16mm nor too narrow like the 23mm, so if you are like me and stick a lens to a camera for 1 or more years and win the advantages of a superb prime then this 18mm is an absolute choice

Absolutely a Top Notch Lens

I started using Fujifilm cameras for the great line of prime lenses they offered. I have all the older f/1.4 lens and they provide a wonderful classic glass look. I also have the 18mm f/2 and it produces some nice images, though a little soft in the corners at wide apertures. After reading reviews and checking out the MFT charts I decided to buy this lens. I couldn't be happier with it! This lens is super sharp and contrasty corner to corner with the aperture nearly wide open. It focuses very quietly and quickly and feels very well balanced on the X-S10. It also produces lovely sun stars with just a little flare/ghosting. This is truly a next-generation lens which seems to max out the resolution of the 26 MP sensors. I am confident it will perform exceptionally well on future higher resolution Fujifilm X mount cameras. There is very little astigmatism or other optical imperfections so expect an exceptionally clean look when using this lens. If you like a 27mm effective focal length and want a future proof lens, this one should be on your short list to purchase.

Amazingly sharp lens

In my opinion, the thing that makes Fujifilm stand out the most is in the quality of their lenses and this one may be one of the absolute best that they make. I have used this lens for about 6 months now and I have not found any issues. It is incredibly sharp from edge to edge and even at f1.4, the performance is amazing. This lens has practically no chromatic aberration either. Also, when using it for shooting the Milky way, you get perfect circular shapes of the stars, even in the corners at f1.4 and you do not have to deal with the coma effect as you do with the 16mm. A perfect lens!

Great Fast Documentary Lens

Purchased this lens for daily family pictures and for vacations, and have been very pleased so far. Took it on a week-long family vacation recently to a theme park and it performed great. The field of view is perfect for taking environmental portraits of nearby family members, and also works great for general scenic shots. I used to use the Fuji 23mm f/2 for these sorts of trips, but found the field of view a bit too tight when trying to capture family members close by, and for selfies. The extra field of view this 18mm offers is just what I was looking for. The focus speed and accuracy were excellent on my X-T3, and had no trouble keeping up with my two young kids. The fast aperture enabled me to capture some great indoor shots on dimly lit theme park rides that I would not have otherwise been able to get. Paired with the X-T3, the total package weighed in right around 2lbs, which was really great for carrying around on long days. Sure, it's not as light weight as the 23/2, but the extra field of view it provides, along with being a stop faster and having superior IQ, make it worth it to me. As mentioned in so many other reviews, the sharpness and image quality are excellent. Highly recommend!

An Optically great lens

This lens is almost unbelievably sharp, even wide open and its ability to capture low light images hand held is fantastic. I have only had the lens in hand for about two weeks now but I am very impressed with the performance. I have heard others say they find it appreciably heavier than its f2 predecessor but mated with my XT4 or XS10 I really don't find it to be heavy at all. It is small enough that it is not at all uncomfortable on my XS10 and seems just right on the XT4. The only gripe is one that is echoed by many others and that would be the aperture ring seems to have been re-designed or somehow the tension on the ring made universally lighter so I do find myself occasionally bumping the aperture ring more often than I do with other Fuji lenses. This isn't a deal breaker though by any stretch. A very good lens. and for me, lighter than I have heard others complain about. Optically I think this is as good as it gets. Really nothing performance wise to complain about.

Why is the magnification shown .15x (less than that of .21 for the 16mm lens)?
Asked by: Larry
I was wondering if focal length which is usually converted to 35mm equivalent does not relate to magnification, what does? I realized that the focus distance would be another part. I found the answer by B&H incomplete so did a web search and indeed found: https://photographylife.com/what-is-magnification "Because magnification can be thought of (and even expressed mathematically) as a combination of focal length and focusing distance" Sensor size is also considered though not really part of magnification, nor the number of pixels . Guessing a what the mathematical formula I tried a ratio , and then the square of that which worked.

Will the 18mm 1.4 focus as fast on the XE 3 as it would on the XT 3 or XT 4?
Asked by: Roger
The Fujifilm Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only, Black) (B&H# FUXT3B) and the Fujifilm X-T4 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only, Black) (B&H# FUXT4B) are newer cameras than the Fujifilm X-E3 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only, Black) (B&H# FUXE3B) the former two offer slight autofocus enhancements relative to the less late-model X-E3. Of course, the X-E3 is no slouch and would not be at a significant disadvantage. Moreover, the FUJIFILM XF 18mm f/1.4 R LM WR Lens (B&H# FU1814) has been designed with a quick linear AF motor to keep up with fast-moving subjects regardless. As such, it will focus with good speed on all three cameras.
