I just recently purchased this lens and have not had too many opportunities to use its macro capabilities yet, however, the few times I've played with it have been impressive. The close focus distance is handy and the pictures come out very sharp. I've also done some family portraits with this lens which have turned out nice with a very pleasant bokeh.

My favorite outdoor lens.

When shopping for a macro lens for a RP I diligently reviewed all the options. Especially as a hobbyist photographer trying to squeeze my budget tight. Most of the data out there is for EF glass and I wasn't opposed to going that route since I was looking at $1k for this rf 100mm f2.8 L lens. But while I could have saved some money by going that route, nothing else came close to giving me this much value and creature comforts. It's this lens or 20yo glass designs or full manual. In fact I Tried the 85mm f2 rf lens by Canon for $500 and while I enjoyed that lens it just didn't do enough things great enough to justify it's price. This lens does justify it's price and it's because of that 85 that I knew I needed the 100mm. Focus is very fast and can be set so sensitive that it will make you dizzy in the evf. It's my first L glass and boy o boy is it luxurious. Very well made and internal focusing is something I had read about but never had. It's just next level where you don't feel worried about it getting bumped around in your bag when the exterior is fixed and rigid. Aside from some focus shift at max magnification there isn't anything else to ask for from this lens. GET IT, even though it's a 100mm prime lens that you really can only use outside or for macro photos. You won't regret it.

Great Macro & Portrait Lens

I took this into the forest the other day and the macro capabilities of this lens are astounding. It comes with a nice lens hood (and a a pouch), but if you want the maximum magnification you need to take the hood off as you'll be getting very close to the subject. The macro focusing rail is a useful accessory to get with this for tripod work. Seems to very sharp and contrasty wide open. I tried the Spherical Aberration control ring and found the results kind of odd, will probably not be using that too often, although if you're looking for a hazy portrait effect then it might work for you.

best lens I own

I absolutely love the photos I get with this lens. While I am still unhappy with the ability to quickly move from super close up to distant objects, I'm not sure there's anything that be changed about that without upgrading to a different camera. This is my first L Series lens and it was worth every penny.

Having a lot of fun with it-bought a slide 'rack' for it so much easier to move camera closer & side to side for even better shots- lots of fun in store for this lens! I was afraid it would be a bit heavy, but it's really not. Using it on an R7.

Couldn't pass this one up with the recent sale. Been eying it for a while and was excited to see it at $999. Great sharpness up tight and close.

Is this lens compatible with the Canon MR-14EX II Macro Ring Lite?
Asked by: Franz
While this lens is compatible with the MR-14EX II Macrolite, realize that after you spend $1400 for the lens and $550 for the flash, you will still have to purchase the 67 mm Macrolite adapter to connect the two.

What is the working distance at 1x and 1.4x?
Asked by: Ed
Focusing distance at 1.4x is 10.2" inches / 26 cm. This is measured from the Sensor Plane. Measuring from the end of the lens this would be 3.6" inches / 9 cm. Unfortunately as this lens has not been made available yet and it is not listed in the specs, we do not yet have information on focusing distance at 1x. Though it would definitely be a longer distance than at 1.4x.

The Eos R7 is not a full frame camera. Do I have trouble focusing on close-ups (plant, insect, face)? Because this lens is a mirrorless lens designed for full frame camera. Is the focus area narrow?
Asked by: BERKE
When using this lens on a Canon R7 it will have a crop factor of 1.6x. This will make the equivalent focal length 160mm. This will have no effect on the minimum focus distance though, which will remain 10.2".
