Testing the Spherical Aberration Control

The most intriguing feature of the Canon RF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM lens is its Spherical Aberration Control, which is adjusted by a ring on the barrel of the lens (Photo 1). Here are the results of a test I created to demonstrate the SA effect (Photo 2). A subject is photographed in front of a background (Photo 3, f/32 SA 0). The manual says that the lower the f/number, the greater the effect of SA Control, so I used maximum aperture in these tests (Photo 4, f/2.8 SA 0). Focus became soft as soon as I began to use SA Control, so I used manual focus to get as much sharpness as possible. One of the greatest advantages of the lens is its clarity, but this is diminished by using SA Control. The manual says that turning the ring toward + (plus) will strengthen the bokeh outlines in the background and soften the foreground (Photo 5, SA +2). Turning the SA ring toward - (minus) has the opposite effect (Photo 6, SA -2). The manual says using the SA ring will change the angle of view so you will need to adjust your composition. Turning SA to +2 enlarged the subject without moving the lens closer (Photo 5). SA -2 made the subject smaller without moving the lens farther away. I used the lens with a Canon R5. Later I looked at the metadata for the JPEG and CR3 files, but didn't see any indication of the SA setting. I'm not sure if the SA setting is stored in the metadata, or what software would be needed to view it. Pressing the INFO button on a Canon R5 displays a great deal of data about an image, but SA setting does not appear. If you want to keep track of your SA settings, you may need to write it down.

I have been very happy with my RF100mm macro lens. It does a great job of stabilization so I don't have to drag a tripod around to do macro photography in the field especially for moving subjects (like bees). Autofocus and photo quality are great, and it takes great regular photos too. All of these were with the R5.

What is the working distance at 1x and 1.4x?

Focusing distance at 1.4x is 10.2" inches / 26 cm. This is measured from the Sensor Plane. Measuring from the end of the lens this would be 3.6" inches / 9 cm. Unfortunately as this lens has not been made available yet and it is not listed in the specs, we do not yet have information on focusing distance at 1x. Though it would definitely be a longer distance than at 1.4x.

Will this lens work with extension tubes and still autofocus? How much more magnification can I expect with extension tubes?

That will depend on the extension tube not the lens. The Vello Auto Extension Tubes for Canon RF-Mount Lenses does have electronic contacts and will maintain autofocus. The total size of the Vello extension tube is 32mm and with that on the Canon RF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM Lens the resulting magnification will be 1.72x
