Canon RF 600mm f/4L IS USM Overview

Optimized for sports, wildlife, and nature shooting, the RF 600mm f/4 L IS USM Lens from Canon offers professional and advanced photographers the excellent image quality of a Canon L-series lens. Designed exclusively for EOS R-series cameras, this super telephoto lens is distinguished by its advanced, lightweight design, quick and intuitive handling, and high-speed performance. Optically identical to the EF 600mm f/4 IS III USM lens, the lens features three modes of optical image stabilization with up to 5.5 stops of shake correction to deliver extremely sharp results whether hand-held or mounted on a monopod.

A circular nine-blade aperture provides beautiful bokeh at smaller lens apertures, and Super Spectra and Air Sphere Coatings minimize ghosting and flare for exceptionally clear results when shooting in backlit situations. Additionally, Super UD and fluorite elements used in the optical design reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color accuracy. The lens provides quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, and two focus presets allow you to instantly return to one or two memorized focus distances. For conditions requiring manual focusing, a customizable electronic focus ring on the lens barrel lets you select from three different speed levels to adjust manual focus to your desired preference. The RF 600mm f/4 L IS USM lens is also compatible with Canon RF 1.4x and 2x extenders, and the lens incorporates a dust and water-resistant design with a fluorine coating on the front element for easy cleaning.

Canon RF 600mm f/4L IS USM Reviews

Stellar Lens for Birds and Wildlife!

I've been photographing birds and wildlife for about 15 years. Several years ago, I owned the EF 600 f/4L IS. Since it was much too heavy for me to hand-hold when I preferred, it lived on a hefty tripod. I switched from it to Olympus five years ago for equal reach in a much lighter form. I recently decided to get back to Canon for birds and wildlife, so I ordered this lens to use on my R5, both with and without the RF 1.4x. I absolutely love it! It's light enough for me to hand-hold on short hikes, I can mount it on a lighter tripod, the images are sharp, and, of course, it's well built. Beautiful change from my old EF version. I cannot find anything to dislike about it. Well done, Canon!

If you're serious about your work and want the very best glass available, the RF600 is for you. To take advantage of the reduced weight that comes with mirrorless gear, I added the RF600 to my kit to compliment my EF600, which has served me well for many years. Excellence in every way!

So much lighter than the EF IS II model and much quitter IS also. Imagine quality is top notch and what you would expect for a lens like this.

I love this lens!! It’s on par with the other big white lenses I’ve owned (400mm f/2.8 III and 500mm f/4 II). It is very sharp, and the weight is excellent. If you’re contemplating buying this lens, I highly recommend it.

Expensive, but a leap in image quality

My all-around favorite wildlife lens for the R5 is the RF100-500. I shoot lots of birds, and larger wildlife is often 40-50+ yards away which is a good range for the 600f4 to fill up a frame. I often shoot into the evening and this f4 prime provides the extra light/sharpness that the f4.5-7.1 100-500 could not do at full zoom in low light. The image quality of the 600 is obviously an improvement over the 100-500 lens, which was very good. The 600f4 is surprisingly sharp and focus is quick. I'm 60+, 5' 11 180lbs and can manage handholding this big lens for up to 30 seconds with effort. The 100-500 was easy. I've now bought/use a monopod which makes the weight a non-issue. I've had only about a week of experience and it's obvious why so many wildlife/sports photographers love this lens. It's excellent, but the price of these large lenses seems unnecessarily inflated.

Impressive Lens!

Outstanding image quality. I use an R5 to shoot wildlife. Frequently crop to achieve desired composition. IQ holds up very well, even with a substantial crop. Also frequently pair with the RF 1.4x tele-extender to achieve 840mm. Hand holding, while possible, is not for the timid. A strong tripod with gimbal head, or a monopod should be considered to achieve best results. Excellent build quality and stunning carry case. Highly recommend this lens.

Do the RF extenders work with this lens?

Do the RF extenders work with this lens?
Asked by: Dan
After speaking with Canon Support yesterday, they confirmed both RF Extenders do work with the RF 600 (and 400) mm prime lenses. Looking at the Manuals for these items, the Extenders was printed in 2019 and the RF 600 mm printed in 2020. Only 3 lenses are/were listed in the Extenders manual at time of print. That has changed and will likely continue to do so as the product line develops and is released.

Several sources have said the EF 600 iii is "slightly slower" than the RF 600 f4 when mounted to an R5. What does "slightly slower" mean? Thanks!
Asked by: Linda
I cannot say specific to the information you listed. But usually when a lens or how it functions is slower it is a reference to the autofocus speed.

Get the RF 400/2.8 instead - it would be more appropriate. You can always use TCs if you are very far away.

Why would someone purchase a lense of this size??? It's a novice question but I honestly dont know why?
Asked by: Zody
The big plus to a lens like this is the aperture. This lens can reach a really far distance and has a wide (for this focal length) aperture of f/4. A lot of people use this for sports or wildlife shooting. You're able to get the shot with enough light so you don't have turn up your ISO or sacrifice your shutter speed.

Does this have new optics or is it basically the EF with an RF mount?
Asked by: Leah Beth
Optically the they are the same. The RF version has 2 focus presets while the EF only has 1. So besides the focus preset and the mount, they are the same lens.

will this lens focus faster than the EF 600mm mark iii plus adapter?
Asked by: Paul
Both the Canon RF 600mm f/4L IS USM Lens and the Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM Lens have the same USM focus motor. Using an adapter with the EF lens will slightly slow down the focus speed.

The Canon RF 600mm f/4L IS USM Lens comes with the Canon ET-160 (WIII) Lens Hood in the box from Canon. It is not possible to switch out the included hood for the Canon ET-160B Short Lens Hood.
