Broader Perspectives

Pairing an ultra wide-angle focal length with an especially bright design, the FE 14mm f/1.8 GM from Sony is a fast and dynamic lens well-suited to landscape, nature, architectural, and astrophotography applications. Its extremely wide perspective is complemented by an f/1.8 maximum aperture for excellent performance in low-light conditions and its impressively compact form factor makes it a portable and versatile option for everything from casual walkaround shooting to staged architectural shoots.

Fast Design and Refined Optics

As a G Master lens, optical performance is prioritized and the 14mm f/1.8 emphasizes both sharpness and bokeh quality for versatility regardless of subject distance or aperture setting.
  • Two XA (extreme aspherical) elements, along with one standard aspherical element, promote high sharpness throughout the aperture range, even when working at the bright f/1.8 position.
  • Aspherical elements feature superior surface precision for effective control over astigmatism, field curvature, coma, distortion and other spherical aberrations for highly accurate rendering and low distortion.
  • The combination of several aspherical elements, along with sophisticated focusing motors, promotes a truly compact and lightweight design, especially for such an ultra-wide focal length.
  • One Super ED element and two extra-low dispersion elements are featured in the lens design and help to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
  • Nano AR Coating II has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions. This updated coating is better suited for larger, curved elements and is especially adept at minimizing internal reflections.

Excels in Low-Light Conditions

  • Rare for an ultra-wide, the f/1.8 maximum aperture is a useful asset for working in low-light conditions, such as for astrophotography applications and when making timelapses where shorter shutter speeds are required.
  • The optical design has been optimized for shooting wide open; the integrated high-curvature XA elements minimize sagittal flare for cleaner, more accurate nighttime sky and point light source rendering.

Fast and Precise Focusing

An XD Linear Motor system uses two separate motors to provide quick, quiet, and precise autofocus and tracking performance. This design also contributes to more natural, intuitive Linear Response manual focus control and an AF/MF switch is located on the lens barrel for quick focus mode switching.
  • Internal focusing design offers more responsive focusing performance and maintains a consistent overall lens length during operation.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 9.8" suits making dynamic close-up images.
  • Despite its ultra-wide field of view, the close minimum focusing distance and bright maximum aperture enable creating shallow depth of field imagery characterized by a strong close-up subject and a soft background.

Reliable Construction

Beyond outstanding optics, G Master lenses are also known for durable and reliable physical constructions, including extensive weather sealing and intuitive designs for easy operability. Also, specific to this 14mm f/1.8, it features a uniquely compact and lightweight design, measuring 3.3 x 3.9" and weighing just one pound.
  • Physical aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications. The ring also incorporates a locking "A" position for use in automated exposure modes.
  • A focus hold button is present on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select programmable settings.
  • Integrated petal-shaped lens hood helps to block stray light from causing lens flare and also affords some physical protection to the front element.
  • Filter holder is incorporated at the rear of the lens, within the lens mount, and accepts cut gel filters and a filter cutting template is included.
  • Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
  • Fluorine-coated front and rear elements resist dust, moisture, and fingerprints and are easy to clean.

A personal gift, this lens surpasses the prior one I had. The shots are clear and detailed. I really like the ease of use.

Ultra Wide Lowlight Glory

I have had this lens for 6 months and it is one of my favorites, especially with my Sony FX6, as the gyro data works very well when it crops in, because this lens is so wide. Not wide enough to cause distortion, but very wide. I was at a wedding recently and the room was packed with over 165 people and I still had lots of room all around the frame when I popped this lens on. Auto focus in fast as per usual for Sony GM lenses. I love the f/1.8 this lens offers. The lowlight is unmatched. It's very light, and very portable. Since I use this on my FX6, I don't need to worry about ND filters, since that camera has a built in variable ND. I do own a Sony A7 IV, so I am interested to see what I can use since the front cannot of this lens can't accept filters. I am a HUGE fan of Aperture rings on lenses, just make on the fly adjusts so much easier, but that is just me. I actually sold my Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 for this lens. I know that a prime lens can be restrictive but I have never had any problems, since I bought this for great lowlight, an ultra wide angle and functionality on the lens itself. Not much more to say, if you can afford this lens, you will NOT be disappointed from a photo or video perspective.

Using this lens with the DJI Ronin 4D and I love the focal length. Very wide but still organic looking. the autofocus is very fast and accurate.

Excellent, sharp as hell

What an awesome lens! I bought it mainly as a backup to my 12-24 f2.8 but it's a great lens all by itself; I can't wait to use it with my starry night photography.

Outstanding for astro but vulnerable to damage

I took my new 14mm f/1.8 lens to Death Valley for a week and got fabulous Milky Way shots. On the last pre-dawn morning in the Alabama Hills, a wind gust knocked over my tripod and the lens went face down into the sand and gravel. The resulting scratches & pits don't show below f8, but I will likely buy a replacement anyway. My complaint is that there is no way to add a protective lens filter because of the design of the lens. I would also like to use this 14 mm with an ND filter for wide angle, long exposure during the daytime. Again, no way to attach a filter on the front. I am still giving it 4 stars because the image quality is great and it is easy to focus, even at night. I shot at f2 and had good image quality all the way to the corners with no coma or barrel distortion.

Excellent for landscape astro

Excellent lens for landscape astro. Very little coma wide open and less coma than other brands of lens at this focal length. Love it!

Incredibly fun lens to use

I attached this lens to my Sony alpha 7 IV. Photos are all unedited, straight out of camera JPG files. I've read many reviews before buying this lens and this just does not disappoint at all. This lens in my mind needs to be described as a fun lens. As a G Master, the sharpness is given. What I am finding is how the photos come out as exceptionally well planned balances from edge to edge. From the building photos you can tell it's all straight lines. Also the colors are astonishing. Again these are unedited, straight out of the camera. This is highly recommended one of a kind lens.
