Broader Perspectives
Pairing an ultra wide-angle focal length with an especially bright design, the FE 14mm f/1.8 GM from Sony is a fast and dynamic lens well-suited to landscape, nature, architectural, and astrophotography applications. Its extremely wide perspective is complemented by an f/1.8 maximum aperture for excellent performance in low-light conditions and its impressively compact form factor makes it a portable and versatile option for everything from casual walkaround shooting to staged architectural shoots.
Fast Design and Refined Optics
As a G Master lens, optical performance is prioritized and the 14mm f/1.8 emphasizes both sharpness and bokeh quality for versatility regardless of subject distance or aperture setting.
  • Two XA (extreme aspherical) elements, along with one standard aspherical element, promote high sharpness throughout the aperture range, even when working at the bright f/1.8 position.
  • Aspherical elements feature superior surface precision for effective control over astigmatism, field curvature, coma, distortion and other spherical aberrations for highly accurate rendering and low distortion.
  • The combination of several aspherical elements, along with sophisticated focusing motors, promotes a truly compact and lightweight design, especially for such an ultra-wide focal length.
  • One Super ED element and two extra-low dispersion elements are featured in the lens design and help to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
  • Nano AR Coating II has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions. This updated coating is better suited for larger, curved elements and is especially adept at minimizing internal reflections.
Excels in Low-Light Conditions
  • Rare for an ultra-wide, the f/1.8 maximum aperture is a useful asset for working in low-light conditions, such as for astrophotography applications and when making timelapses where shorter shutter speeds are required.
  • The optical design has been optimized for shooting wide open; the integrated high-curvature XA elements minimize sagittal flare for cleaner, more accurate nighttime sky and point light source rendering.
Fast and Precise Focusing
An XD Linear Motor system uses two separate motors to provide quick, quiet, and precise autofocus and tracking performance. This design also contributes to more natural, intuitive Linear Response manual focus control and an AF/MF switch is located on the lens barrel for quick focus mode switching.
  • Internal focusing design offers more responsive focusing performance and maintains a consistent overall lens length during operation.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 9.8" suits making dynamic close-up images.
  • Despite its ultra-wide field of view, the close minimum focusing distance and bright maximum aperture enable creating shallow depth of field imagery characterized by a strong close-up subject and a soft background.
Reliable Construction
Beyond outstanding optics, G Master lenses are also known for durable and reliable physical constructions, including extensive weather sealing and intuitive designs for easy operability. Also, specific to this 14mm f/1.8, it features a uniquely compact and lightweight design, measuring 3.3 x 3.9" and weighing just one pound.
  • Physical aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications. The ring also incorporates a locking "A" position for use in automated exposure modes.
  • A focus hold button is present on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select programmable settings.
  • Integrated petal-shaped lens hood helps to block stray light from causing lens flare and also affords some physical protection to the front element.
  • Filter holder is incorporated at the rear of the lens, within the lens mount, and accepts cut gel filters and a filter cutting template is included.
  • Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
  • Fluorine-coated front and rear elements resist dust, moisture, and fingerprints and are easy to clean.

Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM Reviews

Great for big spaces

As a wedding filmmaker, I find myself using this mainly to capture the grandeur of some of the spaces I film in (cathedrals, theaters, and other large and interesting spaces). So technically, I'm using this for architectural work. Too wide to be a general use gimbal lens (for that I'd recommend a 24-70) but when conditions are right this thing can really emphasize the scale of things.

I rented the Sony 14mm f1.8 GM before I bought it and have thoroughly enjoyed using it both when rented and now that I own it. Sony did a great job of producing a tack sharp, fast 14mm lens that is quite compact and light. Wide open it is sharp and bright from corner to corner all the way across the field. It is excellent for night photography of the stars as well as more traditional landscape uses.

Exceptional Lens

Almost everything about this lens is perfect. The build quality, the sharpness of the images it produces, the range of focal lengths. I absolutely couldn't be happier. If I was forced to say something bad about it for the folks that seem to thrive on finding something negative about a product, it would be that there is only one option that I've found for mounting a front filter holder on the lens. This is a fairly expensive option at about $500 for the holder and filter. Luckily Haida makes a rear filter holder which is much more affordable.

The best and fastest ultra wide prime

I use the Sony 14mm 1.8 GM for photo and video. On my Sony A7 IV with 4K 60p, I am getting equivalent to 24mm due to the 1.7 crop factor. This is with breathing compensation, 60p crop, and active steady shot enabled. The videos shot in S-log 3 10bit 4.2.2 looks absolutely amazing with this lens. It's also a perfect gimbal lens. Can't wait to use it for some dynamic city scapes at night or Astro. This is Gold Master at its finest!

This is a great lens I keep in my football bag. It's great for the stadium views from up top. It's very small, light weight, great focal width, and I definitely prefer it over the 12-24 for sports (12-24 is too big and heavy but sports but that works better from landscapes and architecture).

Unbelievable prime

Intense sharpness, investor build quality, smashing optics, and even performs nicely at sub macro distances. This thing is built like a tank, and I was astonished how crisp these pictures come out. Pairing this with an A7RII and the quality is top tier. Remember kids, zoom with your feet

My favorite ultra-wide lens!!!

Holy Moly!!! How can a wide-angle lens be so sharp and have so much detail throughout!?!? This lens is mind blowing. When I go through photos shot using the 14mm 1.8, I'm always astonished by the quality! Like a lot of my other lenses, I got this one for one reason, but it turned out to be so useful in so many more scenarios. Initially I added this to the lineup for the added light and wider focal length to shoot the night sky, but it ended up getting a lot of use during the day as well. When going into slot canyons, this lens replaced my 12-24 G as well as in most situations that I could use a wider focal length than 16mm. It's also fun to get up close to objects and make them look bigger than the world. You can create a caricature effect with this lens if you shoot a person or animal close to its face making the face huge and the rest of the body tiny - those are always fun. As much as it's awesome to capture large vistas with this lens, the focal length makes things in the distance look smaller than they really are taking away from their power in the image. To still get the entire scene and not lose things in the distance I rely on tighter focal lengths and shoot panoramic images.

Just got this lens, anyone notice the rear element moving back and fourth when shifting the weight of the lens? I'm concerned that I may have ordered a dud.
Asked by: Ryan
I was worried about this too on my Sony 20mm f/1.8, but after carefully researching and asking about it, turns out the reason is that the linear focusing system (newer lenses only) behave this way normally and it's not a problem.
